REVIEW – “A great multiplayer version of scrabble that works on your schedule!”

I personally enjoy Scrabble, but that might just be the writer in me. Well let me rephrase I like Scrabble when I get decent letters and I have plenty of time to think out my move. Words with Friends doesn’t exactly help with my letter choice but it does give me ample time to make my next move, heck I can take all day if I want!

Words with Friends is very much like Scrabble in fact it looks almost exactly like Scrabble and game play is exactly the same. Now this is a multi-player game but there are number of different ways in which you can handle this.

1) You play with a friend using one iPhone and you pass it back and forth for each person’s turn. There’s a bit of trust involved here but it remains just as fun and you do get that person on person interaction.

2) You can play with a friend who has their own iPhone and simply use the WiFi connection. This is pretty self-explanatory. The great thing about this is that there is no passing the phone back and forth and you can both be looking at the board and your letters even when the other player is taking their turn.

3) This is what makes Words with Friends a step above. You can actually have the app find you someone else to play with. Then it automatically starts the game and you never have to worry about finding one of your own friends to sit down and play a game of scrabble.

But the really cool thing about this app is that you don’t have to play the entire game at once, in fact the app is designed around the fact that you might lay down a word and then have something else to do for ten or fifteen minutes or even a full day. The app will send a notification to the other player whenever you do make a move and they will have all the time they want to respond as well.

Another nice feature is that you do not have to keep the app open. Make some calls or play another game while you are waiting for an opponent to make their move, once your opponent does make a move you’ll be given a notification and the option to ignore it or be taken right to the board to view what word they have put down.

The game play on this app is easy enough you simply move the tiles wherever you want on the game board. Don’t worry if you can’t see everything perfectly with the full board in view, you can easily zoom in and out.

One thing to note is that with the free version you do have to suffer through some apps. What this means is that after every move you make you have to view an add. Simply click continue and then skip and you’re back to the main screen. No big deal but if it bothers you, the paid version is available. Personally I would rather save the money and put up with the adds.

I think this is a great game to have for the iphone, you can start multiple games and keep them running so that you’re ready to pull off some killer moves whenever you’ve got a few spare minutes to think them over.
