REVIEW – “You get to watch your crops grow and mature realistically as time goes on, and each plant looks and grows differently.”

Another in a long line of Farmville-esque games, Ben Promitzer’s Viva Veggie iPhone app hopes to appeal to the inner farmer in you. What’s different about this game app, however, is that it attempts a bit more realism by taking into account the seasonal changes and their effects on crops. You have twenty years to garner as many credits and achievements as possible.

When the game app loads, feel free to skip the introduction story–it’s nicely done, but a bit long-winded (especially for those with short attention spans). The game recommends that you plant Mooli first; tap each plant to read facts about it or tap the check mark to purchase and plant it (you are given 300 credits at the start of a game). Each plant comes with a gestation period and a certain amount of credit you can earn when you harvest it; the exact amount depends on whether it was a good or bad yield. After you choose your crops and plant them, just sit back and wait the allotted time span until you can harvest them (at that time, a pitchfork will appear for you to tap on). The crop will rot if you don’t harvest them in time. More credits mean more crops, so plant more to earn more.

The graphics for Viva Veggie (cute name, by the way), are pretty darn amazing. You get to watch your crops grow and mature realistically as time goes on, and each plant looks and grows differently. The sound effects are perfect for a farm environment: complete silence broken up by the occasional rooster’s crow and the buzzing of flies. Other than that, most of this game app is just sitting and waiting… and waiting…and waiting. The timer only runs when you’re running the game, so if you shut it off, you’re right back where you left off. So if you have something short to work on, leave this app on to grow your crops, or else you’ll waste a lot of time staring at the screen at absolutely nothing. Going outside to breathe some fresh air and work on your actual garden is probably a lot better than staring at a virtual one.

DEVELOPERS NOTES

Viva Veggie is a strategy game involving growing and managing multiple vegetable crops within a 12 month seasonal cycle.
The game lasts twenty years in total before your time is up. Your challenge is to accumulate as many credits and achievements as possible.
How successful you are depends on what type of gardener you turn out to be. High risk taker, cautious player, or a bit of both to mix it up.
Get to “Know” your seasons. Once you have figured this out, you will reap great rewards.
You can also concentrate on growing one or two types of Veggie to open up the locked achievements. Be warned, though – this needs extra attention and skill.
