TightWire ($.99)
Version 1.4
REVIEW – “Put your balance skills to the test with this infuriating game!”
This app is definitely one of the strangest that I have encountered for the iPhone and perhaps the one that frustrated me the quickest. TightWire is all about trying to walk a tightrope between two buildings, but you are not the average tightrope walker, no you’re carrying just a few extra pounds.
The game is completely controlled using the accelerometer. Tilt it forward and your tightrope walker starts moving but keep it steady because it does not take long before you start to get off balance.
Turning the phone right or left is all it takes to correct your balance but you have to be careful about your movements because if you move it too much then you will quickly knock yourself off the rope in the other direction.
The graphics and the sounds for this game are by far its best feature. I fell more time than I care to remember and the only thing that kept me from throwing the iPhone out the window was the fun of watching him scream and fall into the hard concrete below. He leaves a sizable crack and then eventually will get up and be okay (thought with massive headache I would imagine!).
This game is very very sensitive so it is perfect if you for some reason feel the need to fine tune your accelerometer skills (trying to really beat every level of Labyrinth?) this is the game for you. For me I could never quite seem to get the hang of it, apparently my movements were too big because I could never last very long. (To be fair, my husband could not either!).
So what do I really think of the game? Well for me it’s quite infuriating because well I could never quite figure out how to get very far in the game. I even went to the options screen and calibrated it but to no avail.
What also annoyed me is that while the balancing takes miniscule movements (which makes it very easy to overcorrect) it takes quite a bit of tilt to get him to move forward which would always have my balance a little off from the get- go.
I really think the decision to like or not like this game is personal preference, personally I will probably only use this game as a challenge to friends rather than actually trying to get through the levels myself. But if you think you are up to a challenge give it a try. There is even a lite version where you can try a level before buying it (it’s plenty to try, I never managed to get past the first level, maybe you will have better luck!).
