REVIEW – “The old classic keeps getting better and even more fun!”

Oregon Trail - iPhone App ReviewThe Oregon Trail was always one of the few games that kids actually liked to play in school and now with this unique and fun game brought to the iPhone the fun never has to end.

The Oregon TrailĀ  has gotten a huge facelift in the iPhone version with the app not only trying to appeal to its old followers but also to a new generation of kids.

You start off the game as you would expect with a choice between which character you want to use, what wagon you want and what month you want to leave during. You can even rename all of the family members to give it an even more personal feel. Which can get even more fun as you watch the dialogue between the characters.

Just like the original Oregon Trail you will come up against different situations that may affect how fast you travel, how much food or supplies you have, and the overall health of your party. There are also plenty of opportunities to hunt or fish in order to gather extra food. You can meet up with natives or you can set yourself to work in town to make a few extra bucks to get through the next leg.Oregon Trail - iPhone App Review

One of the things that I really enjoyed were the side quests because it added that extra bit of fun and adventure to the game. At the end of each segment you get a loading screen that is a wealth of information, letting you know if you are behind schedule, what the health of your family is and even some information about the people who really traveled along the Oregon Trail.

And just like the original the controls are really easy to learn and use. On the bottom you have four choices, fast, medium, slow and stop. The faster you go down the trail the better time you will make but the more the health of yoOregon Trail - iPhone App Reviewur family and your wagon will suffer. You even have a menu in the top middle of the screen that you simply drag down. From there you can look at the map to see where you are, choose to rest or make sure that you are keeping up with your side quests.

Everything feels just like the old version of Oregon Trail without the pixelated graphics and with even more fun. Granted I think this version is slightly less of the learning tool that the original version was but the points are all there and what really matters is that it gets kids interested in learning about this part of history. That and of course stealing the game from the kids in order to beat the hardest level.

Yep this version of Oregon Trail comes with four skill levels, Easy and Normal come unlocked but you’ll have to prove your skill in Normal before Oregon Trail - iPhone App Reviewyou can even begin to think about the harder levels.

I enjoyed this game and found it hard to stop playing long enough to write a review. One problem I had was that the game would periodically crash which is just a warning for those of you that may have the older iPhone like me. That was definitely not enough to keep me from playing the game and trying my luck with all the different choices, though lately my luck has not been serving me so well.

But this game is one you really have to try for yourself, and with numerous side quests, 8 mini games and tons of options you’ll be playing this game for awhile. Which is great because this game is constantly being updated and improved so it is always getting better.
