Review – “Learn to Prepare and Serve Sushi, on your iPhone!”
App developer: Jake Davidow

If you’ve been playing Sushi Go Round or any other sushi-themed game, and want to try it out for real, we’ve got an App for you. Lots of people absolutely love sushi (me among them), but feel like it its far too difficult or time consuming to make it yourself. And what if you buy the wrong rice, how do you cut the fish? Well, Teach Me Sushi, is here to help – full of all of the information you’ll need to go from novice to pro.
Not just an App developer that likes Sushi – Teach Me Sushi is a NYC Based Sushi-Class company that will provide you with 1 on 1, small parties or big group classes to help you learn the art of sushi making in your own home. Teach Me Sushi the App is an introduction of the simple and easy-to-learn teaching style of the classes they give. The App starts off with an enthusiastic introduction by Jake – Make Me Sushi’s host, a former caterer, and sushi enthusiast.
Then, there are details on the Supplies you’ll need, from the kitchen gadgets, selecting your fish, cutting your veggies and cooking your rice. Throughout the App you’ll find helpful videos every step of the way, and within the Cooking your Rice section there’s also a built-in Rice Timer!
Picking out your fish is one of the most important aspects of sushi making and there’s a great focus on this in the App – every sushi recipe that calls for fish will give you instruction on how t properly prepare and cut your fish. From experience, mangling a cut can really ruin your day when it comes to sushi making, so having the videos are super helpful.

Each type of Sushi has its own section and detailed instructions – however hands-down the best feature are the detailed videos – there are 13 in all, giving you 45 minutes of instruction. You start off with the relatively easiest Maki Roll, Futomaki, Hand Roll and Nigri. Then come the more difficult Rainbow Rolls, and there is even a section how how to make “Fashion Sandwich” which is a Sushi-style Sandwich that looks really cute and tasty!
While there is a “What you’ll need” section for ingredients and equipment – I really wish there were an option to ‘select’/'deselect’ certain items on the list – as one may already have some, but need to create a shopping list for other items. If you could select certain items, and export them an in-App Shopping List that would certainly boost the usability of this section within the App.
However, a feature that is included that I was happy with was a one-click button to search for your closest Japaense Supermarket – while this does take you out of the App and into Google Maps, so maybe in a future update it will include the option to say in the App or include iOS4 Fast App Switching/MultiTasking so you can quickly go back to the App to continue your lesson.
This is a very in depth and friendly App. Jake is, like I mentioned, really enthusiastic and not overly formal – making him a welcome addition to your kitchen, and he seems to really want to interact with users of the App. Within the App you can join the Teach Me Sushi Facebook Page, where you can share your photos of your creations, or ask questions. You can also email them, book a Personal Session (if you’re in the NYC Area), or follow them on Twitter.
The App instills confidence by being casual and showing the simple steps it takes to make something that seems really difficult or complicated to make, really easy! Instead of spending much more on a DVD, or Book, try the Teach Me Sushi App, and start enjoying awesome home-made sushi today!
