REVIEW – “Your basic diner dash game with a cute cartoon twist!”
The “Dash” series of games has recently become extraordinary popular. They have little to no story line and basically offer little more than repetitive tasks. Why then are they so popular and fun to play? Well for many of us the cute graphics and levels that get more and more challenging and offer more features as you go, can actually be very addicting. Spongebob Diner Dash is no different.
For me the Dash games have reached the end of their entertaining value but I do have a soft spot for Spongebob Squarepants. I can’t exactly explain why but it is just fun nonsense that is great to watch when you just need a reason to smile. I haven’t actually tried the PC version of this game and I really just assumed it would be more of the same, but now that the game has become so popular on iTunes I decided that I might as well try it out.
The game starts off with Mr. Krabs and his goal to make more money and become even more successful. His plan? Start his own franchise. So far not bad but then we get to what is a superficial complaint of mine. Spongebob is the fry cook he belongs in the kitchen not waiting tables! But in this game Spongebob is playing waiter and host while Squidward mans the kitchen. This brings up an entirely different set of problems because Squidward can’t cook. All that aside I know that the switch was made because the majority of people would want to play as Spongebob and not Squidward.
So you start off serving the patrons of Bikini Bottom at the Krusty Krab that we all know and love. The point of the game is to seat guests, take their order, deliver their food, take the check and clear the dishes. All this is done just by tapping where you want Spongebob to go and the game helps out when it can by highlighting whatever you need to tap. The game also offers a quick tutorial to make sure you know what you are doing.
As you progress through the level you get plenty of upgrades like Patrick coming along to help with the customers. Normally Patrick is the last person you want helping out at a restaurant but this game, the pink starfish is actually helpful.
Then you get to move on to other restaurants and while I personally was remorseful at leaving the Krusty Krab but the other restaurants had their own charm as well.
This game offers 5 different restaurants and 50 levels which is standard for a Dash type game so you really are getting a full length game here.
There are a few criticisms and the first is that everything still feels a little small that really some of the charm is lost. Now when you are seating customers the table will blow up so that you can easily see who is sitting where, but beyond this everything just feels really tiny. To be fair it is an iphone screen and part of the challenge of the Dash games is that they have an increasing number of tables, so there needs to be room on the screen for that.
I also felt like more could be done to make this more unique to Spongebob instead of just making it look like Bikini Bottom and Spongebob and friends, I would have liked a few unique changes that fit in with Spongebob Squarepants. While I like the characters and the graphics, it almost feels like a bit of a sellout to just try and cash in on the Dash craze.
But if you like Spongebob and you like the Dash games you will definitely like this one. The price might seem a little steep for an iphone game just remember that these games can sell for as much as $20 on the PC so you are getting a large discount and the ability to take it with you. The value of the game is really only worth it for those that really like this type of game and/or Spongebob. The good news is that they do have a free version so you can try your hand at running the Krusty Krab before you decide to buy.
