Slacker Radio (Free)
Version 1.2
REVIEW – “Perhaps the greatest radio app for the iPhone.”
I have been a big fan of radio stations that cater to finding new music based on things you already like. Slacker Radio does this in a way that is effortless to use and full of different ways to modify and edit your station. I love the number of options on this app and the look of it is great as well.
When you first open the app you are given a list of music genres and the options to create your own station. Simply click on find music and then input whatever band, song or genre you like. The station is almost immediately generated. *Note: If you do not have a slacker account you will have to create one first, it is quick and painless.
Once you are playing your station you are given the title of the song, the band, and the album artwork which is always nice. You are even given a sneak peak at what is coming up next. If you like the song, click th
e heart and add it to your favorites, if you don’t like it you can choose to either ban the song or the artist.
Now one thing to note is that if you do not have a paid account you are only given six skips an hour so use them carefully. It is also important to note that you can skip a song by pressing the skip button or by dragging your finger across the screen (as if you were looking through your albums in your music library).
If you like a song then simply click on the title and you’ll have access to artist bios, album reviews and even lyrics, which is always nice to have.
All of that can be done by pandora and other free stations but what I like about Slacker is that I can go even further to customize my station. I can choose whether it picks music that is way out there, very similar or just hits. I can even choose how often it plays the songs that I have marked as my favorites. The final way that you can modify your station is that you can pick what time period the music is pulled from whether you want just the classics or jus
t current hits, you have that option.
One thing I did notice was that it did not seem to match my music as well as Pandora does. For example my search for Morningwood came up with a Weezer song that was nothing like the songs I enjoy from Morningwood. Whereas with Pandora I can almost always bet that the tone and feel of every song that comes up is going to fit the mood of whatever I picked first. Now this isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it expands my horizons a bit and keeps me from getting bored with the radio station. But when I am looking for something that fits a certain theme it can be a little disappointing.
I do like the look and use of this app better than Pandora though. It is very fluid, very fast and it just looks sleek and cool which is something I really like. For free you can’t really go wrong and I highly recommend at least checking it out. I, personally will be using it more than Pandora even though I think Pandora is better with song matching.
