Rolando 2: Quest for the Golden Orchid is the sequel to the widely popular Rolando game. Well this sequel surpasses it’s predecessor with new challenges, new features and a whole new cast of characters. This is one game that is really tough to put down.
When you start off the game you are just returning from your long journey, but it seems that you have brought a disease back with you! The sages become ill and the only way to save them is to go on a quest for Golden Orchid! So off you go back to set sail again.
The game gives you a tutorial on controls but you use the tilt function to roll the characters back and forth. Slide your fingers upwards to make them jump and then prepare for taps and other motions to unlock different actions. Each time something new comes up the game clearly informs you how to tackle the new challenge. Such as selecting different members of the party or finding out how to attack enemies or use the bombs.
The characters themselves have different properties with some of them being larger than others and some of them being able to stick to walls. There are also levels where tilting your phone not only moves the characters but changes gravity as well!
Each level includes crystals to collect and a time limit to beat so there is a a lot of replay value if you do not manage to get everything perfect the first time around.
The graphics are great and the dialogue is decent (which is rare for an iPhone game!). I did find the background music to get pretty annoying at times so I eventually had to shut it off, but most iphone games I play without sound anyway so it was not much of a big deal.
The fluidity of the movement is what really won me over and that there are different objects to interact with. Once you learn all the basics it is up to you to figure out how to get all your characters quickly through the levels. You also have to remember the different attributes of all your characters such as larger characters will sink in water while the smaller ones will float so you have to figure out how to navigate both types through the same level at the same time. This is done by either selecting the whole group of characters together to get them to move as one or selecting them individually for when they have to navigate obstacles their own way.
The levels are very diverse and each one seems to have something new to interact with, which was constantly amazing to me. There is so much to learn and explore in each level.
The characters were great and the storyline was actually fun and entertaining, better yet there were no grammar or spelling errors! This is perfectly put together game and you will not be disappointed.
The great thing about this game is that you can either buy it all at once or choose a pay as you go option where you try the first chapter for free and then pay for each additional chapter. The price comes out the same way so if you’re not sure, go for the pay as you go option.
I loved this game and I can’t wait to play it all the way through to the end both for the story and for the fun of the different levels!
