REVIEW – “A great turn based RPG with a story to match!”

There are a lot of games in the App Store that have great game play, and a few games that have a good story line.  Very few of them combine both of these aspects and create a game that is both fun to play and engaging enough to finish.  If you have been waiting for a high quality turn-based RPG, wait no longer because Rogue Planet by Gameloft delivers!

While this game did take me a little while to figure out and get used to, it was well worth the wait.  My one criticism would be that there probably should be a little bit more detail given to the “tutorial” when you start the game.  That said, I was extremely impressed with this game right from the start.  The opening screens and menu are top notch and really add to the feel of the game.

When you start the game up you are greeted by a profile select menu.  This game allows you to have up to four different games saved in different slots.  Once you either start a new game or select your previous one you will be taken to the main menu.  From here you can play the game, check your stats, set the options or look at information about the game’s creators.

Once you get ready to play there are 3 different modes: the main story, “Quick Game,” and multiplayer.  If you have not played before you will want to jump right into the story mode as you will unlock more levels for playing the “Quick Game” mode later.  The story mode consists of a basic storyline that you interact with by moving from place to place and talking with various people.  You will then be sent out on missions to explore and conquer new worlds.

Once you get past the first story you will be taken to the main game screen.  Everything here is a very simple touch interface.  You select the unit you want to move and then touch where you want it to go.  Land units can go through water, while vehicles must take bridges in order to cross water.  Along the way you will get a variety of different units as well such as Engineers which can not only build bridges back that have been destroyed but also can heal your units health.

The first couple of levels are extremely easy and allow you to get used to the basic flow of gameplay.  The idea is that you get one chance to move all of your units and then your opponent gets a chance to move all of its units.  There are several different things that are important to strategy in this game that you will learn if you pay attention to the prompts in this first couple of levels.  I would highly recommend that you pay attention to them at least the first time.

While the story may seem a little corny at first, I was definitely sucked into it.  It definitely gets more interesting as you get further into the game.  And that is the key here.  You can easily spend $10 on a game in the App Store only to find that it has very little replay value.  Not only will get hours of enjoyment from this game but you will get it for just $4.99!  If you are a fan Sci-Fi and especially if you are a fan of traditional RPG games, I have a feeling that you will love Rogue Planet.  So download it today from the App Store!
