Review – “Use your iDevice as a full-featured alarm clock!”

Most people are fully aware that their iDevice offers the ability to set alarms from within the built in “Clock” app. If you use your iPhone, iPad or even iPod Touch regularly for this feature then you may want to check out Touch LCD.

Touch LCD is an app that offers a clock display with all kinds of information and extra features. It also has a large display for the time in the center of the screen, and several small displays forthings such as the time in another time zone, the day of the week, and lots more!

The thing that I enjoyed the most about this app is just how simple the interface really is. Everything is literally right at your fingertips with a single touch! The screen is divided into three sections, and there are several different options for what can be viewed in those three sections. To switch between these options all you have to do is swipe that area of the screen side to side.

In the lower right corner of the center area is a little settings button. Touching the settings button will bring up a long list of all the options that are available in this app. One of the first things I did when I opened up this screen is to go to the “Notifications” screen and turn off the “Touch Tones.” This is a feature that is enabled by default that makes a beeping noise every time you touch a button. The beeping noise, while not extremely loud, is very annoying.

Another cool feature of this app is night mode. If you do decide to use this app as a clock at night you can tone down the screen brightness by either touching the little moon-shaped icon in the lower right corner of the main center area, or by opening the settings menu and touching “Night Mode” button.

While there are a lot of positives about this app I did want to note a few issues that I would like to see the developers address. One of them is the sounds that are available to use as the tone for your alarms. First of all, the built-in beeps are just down-right irritating, and as such are all but unusable. The second thing is that the developer needs to add the ability to select individual tracks, or possibly to create your own lists from within the app.

With all of the other features such as the built-in timers and stopwatch, the feature that set this app apart for me was the “wake-up test”. I can’t even count how many times I’ve turned my alarm off without ever fully waking up and been late for something. The wake-up test requires you to touch the 4 corners of the screen in the order that they are lit up before it will turn off the alarm. The order that they are selected in is random and so you really can’t do it just by accident!

While the display of the iPhone makes this clock probably a little small for an alarm clock, this is a very useful app and it looks even better on the iPad! If you’re still reading this I’d encourage you to check it out in the App Store today. It’s only $1.99, so what are you waiting for?

Everlater – A Travel Journal You Can Share

I love to travel. I’ve lived overseas and traveled through 21
countries so far, with more planned in the near future. One thing I’ve
never been inspired to do however, is keep a journal of my travels.
Carrying a blank book means added weight, and in order to share its
contents I would have to wait until I returned home. I tried using a
laptop and even my mobile phone, but uploading photos to Flickr,
describing snippets of my trip on a blog, and using maps via Google
Maps turned out to be a time consuming piecemeal way of sharing my
adventures with family and friends.

Sites like TripIt are starting to approach what I have been looking
for though, and one recent contender in particular stands out way
ahead of the others: Everlater (an anagram for e-traveler). Everlater
is a “whole” application, making the most optimal use of both a Web
based app and an iPhone based companion app.

It’s “whole” in another important way, too: you can plan your trip -
even making use of details from similar trips others before you have
taken – and share your plans with friends and family. Then when you’re
traveling you can capture your experiences on Everlater, and your
friends and family can see them. Pictures, commentary, maps, videos -
all available in one place! And there’s more. Everlater connects to
Facebook, Twitter and email to make sharing and notifications simple.

Last summer, I spent a month in Australia and journaled my travels for
the first time – using Everlater! It was easy and took very little
time away from the activities in which I was engaged. The best feature
was that in places where 3G and wifi weren’t available (I was in far
north Queensland, near Cape Tribulation – you’re lucky to find a
landline there!), I still could use my iPhone to log details offline
for synchronization and uploading later, when wifi was available. This
alone saved loads of money on roaming fees!

As you log your activities, you can add details about specific
restaurants, sights, lodging, travel tips, transportation and more.
All these can be viewed by other travelers, enhancing their plans and
helping to inform the Everlater community.

Everlater is a nascent but solid solution to mobile travel journaling,
and your friends and family will love the fact that they can

Here is a story filled with fresh characters that a child can befriend, learn from and have fun with, and a parent can feel proud of. Egghead is that most lovable, proper and quintessential one among all his friends. He is the one they can count on, he is the one who binds them together, he is the ever-smiling one, he is the `little intellectual’, he is humble, sweet, sensitive, sensible, caring….in essence, he is the hero. He is not strong and proud like Burrah, the grasshopper, or vain and mischievous like Cracker, the squirrel, or whining and complaining like Yana, the caterpillar or always working and thinking like Reni, the ladybird.

He is the one who makes a difference in their lives, so that they can all be together and have fun. Oh, Egghead is the cutest. He is a star!

My child looks at him as that hero, who has simple but great ideas, who talks of friendship even when he is so small and who loves everything about this world. I would love to have my child, learn this from Egghead.

Egghead and his friends, are such a visual treat, too. The illustrations are colourful and the crayon effect is lovely. There are very few such well-illustrated stories in the market that also talk of basic things like friends and having fun. The story – A Game of Adventure – is simple and easy to understand. It weaves around small animals, very rarely mentioned in the current rage of cartoon characters. The qualities that the characters have are so humane and normal, and not extraordinary. And the story goes on like a true thriller for children aged 3 to 6 years. Loved it! I can’t wait to get some more stories from The Egghead series.

Market Millionaire (Free)

As an avid stock trader and regular reader of financial news, I figured I’d give Market Millionaire a try.  I’ve used iTrade and Virtual Stock Market Lite in the past (they’ve been pretty good), but I think I’ll be using Market Millionaire from now on.  All three are free, so it doesn’t hurt to try them, right?  A few things made Market Millionaire stand out to me, but time will tell.

The first thing I noticed was that Market Millionaire allows users to find securities in worldwide markets.  Most of the other stock market games limit you to the NYSE and NASDAQ, but I’ve been able to find things on some of the Canadian exchanges and European exchanges as well.  It looks like there isn’t support for some of the smaller foreign markets (Singapore for example), but it’s got a decent set to start with.

The other thing I like is the clever implementation of the stock search tool.  You can start typing in a company name and it’ll drop down a list of tickers that could match that name.  It cuts down on typing, and this way I don’t have to remember all the tickers for every company in my portfolio.

Finally, I’d just like say that while it’s not as feature rich as some of the others, the layout is intuitive, and everything you need (company information, news, etc.) is readily available within a few taps.  The app is free though, so it’s hard to complain about these little things.

SOHOinmypocket has made shopping in the trendy SoHo & NoLita neighborhoods of New York City a breeze. I downloaded the app because it was always difficult for me to get around since the streets are confusing and there is so much to see and do. I was also intrigued by the “Deals” section.

The app has an awesome directory that was very accurate (it lists all the stores, restaurants, bars, hotels, art galleries, etc. – sorted by proximity to where you are standing) and the map was great to see everything that was around. The app also offers turn-by-turn directions to your destination of choice. The deals section was also very cool. 60 Thompson, one of my favorite hotels, had a great deal posted. I also stopped in at Bundle & Atelier Minyon, both of which were advertising exclusive deals on the app.

To sum this up, the app is very user friendly and made my shopping trip to SoHo easy and enjoyable. I look forward to using this app more, once I replenish my bank account from all the stores it helped me find! For $.99, you can’t go wrong with this app!

Zequr Password Pilot (Free)

REVIEW – “It is certainly my best recommendation for a password manager in 2010.”

I found Zequr Password Pilot when scanning the options for different password managers on the market. The initial reason I chose Zequr were for all of the great features in the free version and I later learned that it simplified everything. The more I used this app, I got lost in all the features and setups like Lastpass and Roboform.

This free iPhone application gives you a great user interface on your smartphone. The color card on which you use a pattern to log in, looks amazing and works so integrated on a touch display, that just to log in is cool. I can have an advanced pattern and still remember it, so no more short insecure master passwords!

I now have all my passwords with me wherever I go, and I can login to Zequr from any Mac, PC or Smartphone who has Zequr installed as my data is saved heavily encrypted in the cloud just like Skype has all your contacts, info, etc wherever you login.

It is certainly my best recommendation for a password manager in 2010.

REVIEW – “I give it a 9/10! Awesome app.”

It is more than a book aimed at children that help kept my cousins occupied for ages! Don’t be fooled to thinking this is just an ordinary eBook this is unique. It has a great combination of reading, games and coloring in using the touch screen!

The read along touch made the game very easy for them to go through and they could do it at their own pace, where they could use their fingers across the words so they are read aloud and then hold down the word to hear it spelled out. It made it not only a book but it could be used as educational to help kids learn.

There were two mini games included in where a kids word find and memory pair that had two levels easy and hard. Also the ability to color in the pages was great as it just added another aspect to it. Never seen an app. that uses the touch screen to read along as well, which is cool.

I think this app is very descriptive but it should be tried before giving a verdict. I give it a 9/10! Awesome app. And it would be interesting to see more titles come out!

You then have to discover where this structure is located on a google map. The quiz is solved if the map matches the given target region.

You can play some easy random quizzes or you can search for specific quizzes. There are more than 20’000 user generated quizzes waiting for you. Their difficulty ranges from very easy (the White House in Washington) to very hard (a funny looking rock somewhere in Argentina)

You can even create your own quizzes. Use your actual position or zoom to a well known place and add some hints. After storing the quiz you can send a link to the quiz by mail to all your friends.

placeSpotting is easy to understand because it is based on a simple idea but believe me, it can be quite addictive. So be careful, if you start playing on a Sunday evening it can get very late!

This App is No.1 on Top Free App list right now in the Korean App Store, so I checked it out. What a GREAT rhythm action game!! Its really unique, the whole idea of using sensors for a music game. I heard the full version will let the players play with their own music with SwingSwing. If you like music and dancing, SwingSwing is definitely the game for you.

SwingSwing is a rhythm action game and you play it by tilting the iPhone or iPod touch (the sensors will sense your movements). You’ll find it quite unique because it’s different from the original touch games that just require touching the screen, you’ll probably get addicted in no time.

The SwingSwing (Christmas 2009 version) is a Lite so it will only play a carol, and there are three levels you can choose from; easy, medium, hard. The lite version has some parts that users may feel unsatisfied with because it is not completed yet, however it gathered many people’s interest and finally made its way up to the ‘What’s Hot’ list on December 22 in the US App store.

REVIEW – “Well worth the price.”

This is a very interesting app that takes the content of a new Stephen Covey book (“Great Work, Great Career”) and puts in iPhone format.  However, it’s more than just a typical book app.  It has a number of very thoughtful exercises that really help you put the ideas from the book into practice.  You can help identify your own strengths and the key needs of your organization (current or prospective), and then build a personal mission or ‘contribution’ statement.  To help put it into practice, the app helps you identify immediate action steps you can take to begin making an immediate contribution to your organization.

Another cool feature is the “Build Your Village” one.  This helps you develop a solid networking base from your existing contacts on your device or other simply other people you may want to connect with.  What’s real helpful is that rather than just saying you should ‘network,’ the app suggests specific ways you can connect with the various people in your ‘village’ (ie those you want to network with) and what roles they can take for you (e.g. mentor, coach).  The othe main feature is called “Find Resources” which helps you execute existing projects in your current job by finding what and who you need to accomplish your objective.  This also leads to specific action items to take, which along with the other ones are all organized and prioritized in your “Action Center.”

There’re lots of very professionally done videos featuring Stephen Covey and interesting articles on career building and job seeking.  Overall, it’s good to see a solid, well thought out app that adds a lot of value to your professional life.  Well worth the price.

REVIEW – “I can recommend this game for balance game fans of all ages.”

This is a nicely done balance game, with seasonal themes and an original, holiday music. Graphics are extremely polished, and the gameplay is enjoyable for all ages.

Your goal is to drive balls in the hole, while getting around snowmen, Christmas trees, teddy bears, and further “seasonal” obstacles. (I wish there were a few more levels, though.)

The controls are responsive and intuitive: tilt, turn and shake your device to control the ingame platter.

You can check out your rankings on the online highscore lists (includes Twitter and Facebook integration). Of course, you can set up an offline account if you don’t want to share your achievements with the world.

I can recommend this game for balance game fans of all ages.

REVIEW – “Loads of stuff to play and enjoy which is why I rate this game a 4/5.”

Arroic is one of my recent Christmas purchases that I just had to give a loud recommended App shout towards. The concept and hook of the game is a fantastic pleasure, it has 62 levels to enjoy and 6 balls to play with in addition to collecting 124 trophies which can honestly keep you occupied for ages.

In a nutshell the game is a crazy golf/puzzle pool sort of game. The premise is simply to draw a series of arrows to push the ball successfully from A to B. The game however has ruthless obstacles and hazards that provide an ample amount of challenge and darn it moments. These traps range from sticky goo to bottomless pits, annoying rotating cog wheels and flying zeppelins that really do test your patience.

It’s a tricky game that takes a bit to get to grips with, but once you build an understanding of how the ball and arrows work it can be quite a rewarding experience. I definitely recommend reading the help section for the tips as when I first played it was quite a different game, especially after discovering how the scoring works.

What I like most about the game is its strategy and skill elements, its nice analysing and experimenting with the environment to figure out the best possible route to use fewer arrows, collect all the coins or to get the fastest time… or all of the options combined.

Hearing the fail sound when winning no trophy was something I thought of as a punishing kick on first play. You can play the game for either time or score, the gold time trophies are reasonable to attain but the real angst is when acquiring the gold score trophies. This is something for gamers that you will either love or hate as to achieve them you have to collect as many coins plus reach the finish as fast as possible. This is most definitely difficult with the later levels in mind. Progressing through the game however unlocks different balls that have abilities and perks that make the levels and trophies easy. But I would recommend sticking with the standard or basketball for those who like a challenge.

The game also has Agon achievements that are ok, there’s a few in there which are quite a challenge to collect. There are also online leader boards to upload and submit scores that are empty at the mo but I can imagine it being sweet to sift through worldwide scores.

Annoying downsides to this game are the occasional crashes halfway through a game (but I’m sure they’ll be an update some time or another) and the controls can be a bit unresponsive at times too.

All in all the game play is great, it’s full of varied levels and it’s brilliant to collect all 124 trophies, the 6 balls and 35 achievements. Loads of stuff to play and enjoy which is why I rate this game a 4/5.

REVIEW – “What I really like about this app is that it works so well on the iPhone.”

This is a great app for beginners who want to learn Japanese. There are two tutors, one English, the other Japanese, and they explain the basics of the language at a very good pace and in clear fashion. You can follow the text with the audio of the tutors speaking. It isn’t just a bunch of phrases for you to remember – they clearly explain how to construct sentences oneself – which is great!

Also, there are animated diagrams that show you how to write in Japanese. These are really useful! And, there is a vocabulary list, and a short quiz.

What I really like about this app is that it works so well on the iPhone. The UI is clean, well-designed, and attractive. Everything works really well. The content is excellent. If all language apps were as good as this, then learning languages would be easy, and more fun!

I strongly recommend this app to everyone!

The Psychic Locator is a unique application that can be used to find a psychic near where you live.  It gives you a directory listing psychics by US state / city with a variety of specialties.

Psychic specialties listed include:

Psychic – able to predict the future, to show you your future path

Medium – able to contact the spirit world, to speak with loved ones who have passed

Channeler – able to host spirit guides, to communicate with the spirit world

Feng Shui – able to balance your living / work spaces to increase your harmony

Reiki – able to use healing energy on your body to increase your health

Pet Communicators – able to speak with your pets

I tried the Psychic Locator app out and was able to find the psychics in my city; I liked the way I was able to dial out directly from the listing on my iPhone.  That way, I could contact the ones I was interested in just by clicking on their number.

Some of the listings had email and website links, too.  For email, all I had to do was click on their email address to send them email from my iPhone.   I could also check out their websites from the links.

Most listings let you see where the psychic you’re interested in is on a map, and gives you directions from where you are to where they are.  Pretty useful app, if you’re interested in the psychic world.

Stick Suicides! is an awesome iPhone application where you can view high quality StickMan art at the tap of a finger. This requires no internet connection at all so is very handy. I never got bored of this application because there is always something new and the developer makes sure there is an update every week. You can view animations soon and the artwork is truly amazing. The quality never fails to amaze me.

This application is really underrated and deserves to be noticed. The interface is very easy to use and user friendly. The buttons are not to small to press or too big so they look stupid. It is not an app that is just based on apple sample code it has it’s own great features. I have searched all over the app store and this is the only application of its kind. It is truly unique to any other app and is therefore a great buy for StickMan lovers and just iPhone App Lovers. But really don’t we all love that retro stickman?

Fall of Atlantis (2.99)

REVIEW – “I’m trying to beat my friends’ high score in Puzzle mode, which basically is a continuous mode.”

Fall of Atlantis Is rich in content, as expected from a $2.99 game. I usually disable the sound in iPhone games as I want to listen to my own music, but then I discovered that the game has a whole soundtrack with well-produced mood-enhancing songs fitting each level of the game perfectly.

I’ve played this game for two hours and just finished the Story-mode which has an interesting game play to it. Basically you start puzzle-bobble like puzzles against objects in the game world to progress through the levels. It’s a fun and challenging task and sometimes you get big combos to boost your ego.

The game also has a lot of extra materials like Achievements, Unlockables and a Puzzle mode with over 50 different puzzles in it (at least according to the description on app store).

There is also a high score incorporated, so currently I’m trying to beat my friends’ high score in Puzzle mode, which basically is a continuous mode where you solve differently structured puzzles in the same manner as in the Story mode, but slightly more challenging.

The game is thoroughly enjoyable, even though the somewhat experimental and dark atmosphere in the game world isn’t what you’d expect from this kind of game. I’m still very hooked though, and I think there will still be a couple of more hours before I run out of content in this game.
