Review – “Let your iPhone help you plan your next outing!”

We’ve all been there. You take a week off to go hunting or fishing, and the whole time you’re there you just are not having any luck. While there is nothing under the sun that can guarantee results, it has been known for quite some time that following the moon’s patterns can help tell you when the ideal times for hunting and fishing are. Lunar Hunt and Fish is an app designed to help you schedule your days around those ideal times directly from your iPhone!

This app get’s straight to the point with an extremely simple interface. When you open up Lunar Hunt and Fish you’ll see a brief intro screen and then be taken directly to the search function. At the top of this screen you’ll see controls for location. You can either use your current location, or you can search by the zip code of the area that you’ll be visiting. Something that would have been nice here is if there was a way to find the location that you want to search on a map, but it’s not that hard to look up zip code online if you don’t know it.

Once you have your location setup you’ll need to set up the block of time that you will be available and ready to go fishing/hunting. There are options to set the time zone, daylight savings status and then a box to set the starting and ending time of your search. The “time zone” setting was a nice touch to this app as it allows you to see the times in the time zone you will be in, regardless of what time it is where you are now. It would have been nice to have a map of some sort to help you figure out the time zones where you will be at on your trip, but again this information is not hard to find, and sometimes it’s better to just keep an app simple!

Once you have everything ready all you have to do is touch the “Get Best Times” button and you’ll see a list of times at the bottom of the screen. The times are sorted by “Best Times,” and Good Times.” They are also grouped by day. I think it would have been nice if the actual days showed up in the search results instead of just “Day 1,” “Day 2,” etc. but it’s not a huge deal because you can see the day range above the list as you browse it.

The only real problem I had with this app is that there seems to be a small bug when entering a day range that has days in two different months. When you do this it pops up a message telling you that you have “No Internet Connection.” This bug is relatively minor though and I’m sure it will be fixed in a future update. I would definitely say that whether you are serious about hunting and fishing, or even if you just have a big trip planned sometime soon that this is definitely an app worth taking a look at. You might be able to find this information somewhere else for free, but you won’t find it in a way that is this easy to use anywhere else that I’m aware of! So what are you waiting for? REVIEW – “Iphone OS gets a new boxing sim!”

There have been a variety of different sports simulations and games released for the iPhone OS.  This is one of the first I have seen to take on the sport of Boxing.  SlasherDerby puts you in the shoesof an up and coming boxing champion, and offers multiple opponents with their own unique styles and a social interface to compare your stats with your friends!

When you open the game the first thing you seen is a menu with a boxing character on the left.  Probably the weakest thing about this app is the menu system.  I was not really a fan of how the menu options slide on to the screen every time and new menu is opened.  Visually it is fine, but it quickly got old while trying to navigate the menus.

There are options to adjust length of each round, how many rounds a fight lasts and to turn the music on and off.  Another nice feature that I didn’t expect is the ability to compare your performance with your friends via the “AGON Online” social network.  While I had not previously used this particularly network, it seems to be very similar to others that I have used.  It offers features such as chat, “awards,” and all kinds of different high score lists.

Before you head right in and “Fight!” I’d highly recommend that you run the “Tutorial.”  It does an excellent job of walking you through all of the controls and basic strategy that you can apply during a fight.  You’ll need to be aware of these controls as you get further along.  I found that while it was very easy to just “buttonmash” and destroy your opponent early in the game, it quickly gets more difficult and requires you to be more strategic to win fights.

Another useful feature if you really want to get far in this game is the “Watch” mode.  In this mode you can select any two fighters and watch them fight.  Why would you want to do this?  Well each fighter has his own unique style and rhythms as he fights.  If you really expect to defeat all of them you’ll need to not only learn these patterns but find ways to counter them.

My overall impressions of this game are that visually it is above average.  It would have been nice to have some more animations to make it obvious when punches are landing and/or missing, but the character models themselves have a decent amount of detail.  I even noticed that the fighters develop cuts and bruises as the fight gets further along!

The gameplay itself manages to offer a great deal of depth strategy that I did not expect, while at the same time being extremely easy to play!  It is not without its faults, but in the App Store this is probably one of your best bets for a good boxing game.  If you’re still not convinced be sure to check out my embedded video to see the game in action!

MLB.com At Bat 2010 ($14.99)

REVIEW – “A must have app for any baseball fan!”

One of my favorite apps last year was MLB.com At Bat.  I would have been happy to just get that same app again this year, but Major League Baseball has taken their app to another level with this year’s edition!  Not only has the interface improved, but they’ve added a couple of new features that every baseball fan will love.  If you are a baseball fan this is an app that you need to have on your iPhone!

What really makes this app great is how easy it is to use.  When you open it up the first screen you’ll see is the “Scoreboard.”  This is an overview of all the games for the current day.  It gives you a simple overview of all the game times, scores and stats.  If a game is currently in progress you can also listen to it, or if you are subscribed to MLB.tv you can actually watch it live by touching the corresponding button at the bottom of the screen.

If you are familiar with the premium features that MLB.com offers you’ll realize that if for nothing else at all this app is worth $14.99 because you get free access to GameDay Audio!  Well with this year’s app this has been taken a step further!  MLB.com has made it possible to stream Gameday Audio in the background by using the Safari web browser!  What this means is that you can be playing a game, checking your email, surfing the web, etc. while at the same time continuing to listen to the game!

Another great feature is that this year’s app has Gameday audio, and even some video for Spring Training as well as the regular season!  So if you’re itching to get in on the action before the season starts MLB.com has done a much better job of getting Spring training resources out through this app.

At the bottom of the screen you’ll find a menu that will let you access several different screens.  Not only do they offer video highlights like last year but you can also read the latest news and check the standings through dedicated tabs from this menu.  There are also a variety of settings to customize how you view everything in this app if you touch the “More” button in the bottom right corner of the screen.

One of the best new features of this app is the ability to browse video highlights and news by team!  Using the tabs at the top of the screen it is extremely easy to filter through the mass of news stories and videos to get to the ones that are most important to you!  You can also set your favorite teams in the “more” area to make it easier to access information on those teams more quickly!

The main blackspot on this app continues to be the blackout rules imposed by MLB on the MLB.tv video service.  That is no fault of this app though, but rather a rule imposed as a result of MLB’s agreement with the teams.  With that said this app is both one of the easiest and most informative sports apps that is available in the App Store for any sport.  I could go on about the variety of features that it has from Push Notifications to detailed player statistics and rosters.  However, if you are still questioning whether the app is worth the $14.99 price tag I’d encourage you to check out the “Lite” version of this app.  With that said, if you want to be able to listen to the games anywhere you will not find a better bargain than this app, so head to the App Store and download it for yourself today!

Belly Bums ($0.99)

REVIEW – “You’ve never played volleyball quite like this!”

I’ve played a lot of different types of games, but Belly Bums has to be one of the most unique ones that I’ve played.  The idea of Belly Bums is that you actually play volleyball by bouncing the ball with your characters huge gut!  The games are all single player and your player moves automatically toward the balls next location.

When you open this app up for the first time you’ll be prompted to sign in to your OpenFeint account if you already have one.  This interface provides an easy way to communicate with your friends, as well as track your “achievements” and progress!  All of your OpenFeint information can then be accessed anytime via the “OpenFeint” button in the menu on the right side of the mail menu!

There is a brief “Help” screen that you can access by pushing the button in the lower right corner of the screen.  While I kind of wish that this screen went into a little more detail, the controls are fairly easy to figure out.  The only problem I seem to have had is that sometimes it seems like it’s impossible to get to the ball.  Because you don’t actually control the movement of your player it is way too easy to have the ball fly over your head!

Once you think you’ve got it figured out there are two different modes of play.  “Quick Play” Which allows you to set a few basic settings and get started; and “Tournament” which will allow you to travel from place to place competing in the tournament of a lifetime!  There are a variety of characters to choose from as well.  At first you only have one available, but as you get further into the game more are unlocked!

Gameplay itself is extremely simple.  The basic idea is that you touch the screen when you want your guy to “bounce” the ball back in the other direction!  You can also aim the direction in which you will hit the ball by touching the screen and “swiping” in that direction!  Once you actually get started playing the pace of the game is very fast.  The pauses between levels are very fast and will catch you off guard if you’re not carefull!

The graphics and sound in this game are both top notch, and they manage to pull  off the “cartoony” look quite nicely!  My only major complaint is that even the “easy” level  kindof difficult.  I had to play multiple games to beat the computer once!  With that said, once you start getting used to everything it will become second nature!

With all of the Apps in the App Store, sometimes you need one that will just brighten your day, and that is exactly the kind of app that this is!  It offers literally hours for fun for all ages!  So whether the app is for yourself or to entertain your young child you should really check this game out for just $2.99!  So what are you waiting for?  Download your copy of Belly Bums from the iPhone App Store today!

CBS Sports NCAA March Madness on Demand ($9.99)

REVIEW – “Don’t miss a second of the action with March Madness on Demand!”

I’ll have to admit that my expectations for this app were not set veryhigh.  I kind of figured it would end up being a lot like other large events that have tried to stream video for free, or that there would be a hidden cost.  This app is about so much more than just merely streaming live video though.  You can access all kinds of great features like viewing the brackets, keeping up with all the stats and scores live, and even check out how your CBS Sports bracket is doing!

Where this app really shines is in the ease of use factor.  Everything is extremely intuitive, and if you’re not as interested in the “premium” features like push notifications and live audio/video there is a free version available as well!  When you open up the app you’re greeted with a familiar little sound bite from CBS Sports and taken to the main scores screen .

At the bottom of the screen you’ll notice a menu that has several different options.   You can use this to quickly access the pages to view your personal CBS Sports bracket, video highlights from the latest games and the latest news available!  The scores screen that you start out on will give you a list of all the games that are going to be played and/or have been played on the current day.  At the top of the screen is a little bar that will allow you to move to a different day if you want to check results or see what time a game is going to be played.

What really takes this app from being just a “good app” to a great one is how easy it is to interact with the games.  Touching any game in the “Scores” list brings up a list of ways that you can interact with it.  These range from posting a comment about it on Twitter/Facebook, checking out the games stats if it’s over/in progress, watching live video, or even viewing a video of the highlights if the game has already been over for a while.

The “My Bracket” tab worked extremely well when I tried it.  I was able to quickly and easily log into my CBS Sports account and view how my picks were holding up as things were happening!  At the top of this screen there is a little menu bar with 3 different options: “My Bracket,” which is where it starts, “Standings,” and “Rules.”  One thing I noticed about the bracket view is that it is easier to navigate from the “Scores” than it is from the “My Bracket” area.  With that said, it’s not overly difficult, I just would have preferred to have it work the same way in both places.

The best feature of this app by far though has to be the live video.  I have tried a lot of apps that claimed to offer live video of things, and while most of them were “ok” over WiFi, they have all struggled over the cell network, whether it be Edge of 3G.  This app is simply amazing on any connection!  The app does an excellent job of adjusting the quality of your feed in real time to avoid problems, and if it loses connection for a few seconds, instead of you missing a few seconds of action it just “pauses” the live feed and then continues playing where you left off when it gets its connection back!

Another great feature is that you move into an area where your connection does not have the bandwidth to handle live video it will automatically switch you to an audio-only feed.  As soon as your connection improves the video will load right back up again!  The video itself looks simply incredible!  I tested it over both AT&T’s 3G network and my home WiFi connection and the video was both crystal clear and rarely had any glitches or stops for “loading.”

So what if you’re in the middle of watching the game, but you want to see how another game is doing?  Or maybe you’re wondering how many points that guy that just nailed another 3-pointer has?  All of this information can be accessed from a simple menu at the bottom of the screen.  To bring up this menu during video playback you just have to touch the screen anywhere.  You’ll be able to see a list of the five players that are on the floor for both teams, as well as view live updates on the scores of any other games that are going on!

I could go on and on about how this app works and all of the “little” features that make it the amazing app that it is, but the long of the short of it is that this is an app that every fan needs to have on their device.  Whether you are a basketball fanatic, or you are just competing in a bracket with some friends, this is THE tool to keep you up to date on the road!  Many people may hesitate to spend the $9.99, but let me assure you that if you do, this app will not disappoint you.  So what are you waiting for?  At the very least check out the free app in the App Store today!

iOverTheNet ($1.99)

REVIEW – “Fast paced volleyball action on your mobile device!”

There are tons of apps available in Apple’s App Store, but unfortunately it’s not always that easy to find a game that feels new and is a lot of fun, but this game does just that!  While there have been lots of sports games in the App Store, there have been very few volleyball games.  This game takes you right into the action as you travel the world competing in beach volleyball!

The game loads quickly and takes you to a main menu screen.  The background music here is descent, typical upbeat sports music.  It does get a little old after a while, but is also easy to turn off by either putting your device on vibrate or by turning it off in the “Setup” menu.  There are a couple of other options available here like the ability to change the camera view and your player name.

One thing that I think a lot of people will notice quickly is that there is only one difficulty setting.  The reason that I think people will notice it is that this game is very difficult when you first start playing it.  I would highly recommend that everyone check out the tutorial video that is available because it does a good job of visually illustrating how the controls work.  Without the video it is definitely not easy to figure out.

Once you are ready to get started there are two modes of play.  “Single Game,” and “World Tour.”  In the single game mode you get to choose a city to play in and your opponent, while in the world tour you will play several games, moving from place toplace and playing different opponents.  You’ll notice that there are quite a few teams to choose from and even more destinations to play at.

Game play itself is a lot of fun if you’re willing to learn how to play.  I found very quickly that the “auto motion” feature makes it almost impossible to do well because the AI for moving your player is very poor.  While the manual control (via a small D-pad in the lower left corner) takes some getting used to, it actually works quite well once you adjust to it, and is the only way that you will be able to compete against the computer.

I found that most of the controls were pretty easy except for the “swipe” that is used to spike the ball and jump serve.   The problem I had with it was that it was very difficult to figure out whether it was my location in the air, the speed of my swipe, or the direction of my swipe when it didn’t work right.  It was not quite as bad while spiking as the serving though.  I found that if I tried to jump serve I ended up not getting it over the net more often than not.  With all of that said, I was eventually able to adjust to the swiping controls.

If you like a challenge I think that you’ll find this game to be a blast.  While there are a few small flaws in the gameplay itself, specifically that it is almost impossible to hit the ball over the net before the third strike even if you want, this game still manages to be a lot of fun and the graphics are extremely nice.  If you enjoy volleyball this could very well be the game that you’ve been waiting for.  So my question is if you’re still reading this review what are you waiting for?  Head to the App Store and grab your copy of iOverTheNet today!

NBC Olympics on AT&T (Free)

REVIEW – “The easiest way to follow the Olympic games!”

It’s that time again already.  In just a few days the Winter Olympics will be starting up and there will be all kinds of events from bobsled, to skiing going on again.  The question now is how are you going to follow all your favorite events while still keeping up with your regular schedule?  Well NBC and AT&T have come up with a solution for you in the form of an iPhone app, and it just received its first content in an update today!

When you open up the app you will start on the “Now” screen.  This screen contains a combination of stories, photos and videos of what’s going on with the Olympics at the time.  Since the Olympics haven’t officially started quite yet there is also a “Countdown to Vancouver” on this page as well that shows how many days, hours, minutes and seconds until the opening ceremonies!

The menu at the bottom of the screen has several different options.  You can search through information by sports, schedules or favorites.  The information is laid out well, and it looks like there will be a lot more information once the games actually get started.  One of the best features of this app is the “Social” feature.  You can link this app with your Facebook and/or Twitter accounts and actually interact with some of the athletes that are participating!

While the rest of the app is great, my favorite part is the “Schedules” screen.  On this one screen you have quick access to not just when the events are actually happening, but also what time they are showing on TV, when you are available on the internet and the ability to look at times for events based on the sport you are interested in or the country you would like to follow!  The information is easy to scan through and is detailed.  However, I was not able to preview the online schedule just yet because it has not been released.

While time will tell just how often this app gets updated, and how good the information is, the interface is certainly very good!  That combined with up to date schedules and even push notifications for your favorite sports makes this a must have app for any sports fan!  If you love the Olympics as much as I do but just don’t have the time to follow it sometimes there has never been a better solution that this app, so download it today!

NBA League Pass Mobile ($19.99)

REVIEW – “Take the NBA with you on the road!”

After Major League Baseball released their iPhone app that featured live game audio and the option to pay for video many looked to the NBA to do the same and they delivered.  NBA League Pass Mobile is an iPhone app that will allow you to view live NBA games on your iPhone and/or iPod Touch!  It also offers real-time stats, standings and even the ability to view a game that has already been finished for 48 hours after it s over.

The app loads up fairly quickly and starts you out on the “Live” menu tab.  From this screen you will see a list of all the games that will be on for the current day.  Unfortunately the NBA has blackout restrictions and so if the game is listed as being on ESPN or if one of the teams playing is in your local area it will be “blacked out” and you will not be able to watch it live or after the game is over.  If the game has already been played you can touch it to view stats.  If the gameis in progress already then touching it will load up a live stream of the game right on your device.  It’s that simple!

Once you’ve loaded up a live stream you have several things you can do while you watch.  Touching the screen anywhere brings up your menu of options.  At the bottom of the screen you will see buttons that allow you to share what you’re watching with your friends Facebook, Twitter and email.  There is also a button in that same bar that will allow you to see the top five players in the current game based on their stats that night.

Something that I’m sure all of you are wondering is what the video quality is like.  I’m happy to report that this app does an excellent job of changing its stream quality to match your connection.  I tested it in several different environments.  I used my WiFi at home and at work as well as moving between WiFi 3G and EDGE connections.  What I found is that if you have a solid WiFi connection the quality is amazing!  The best part is that while it is not quite as crystal clear on 3G and EDGE I experienced very few interruptions when moving between connection types.  It was noticeable when the app would degrade/increase the quality but it rarely interrupted video playback.

The rest of the app offers some basic options such as a screen to view the upcoming and past schedules, a “highlights” page with daily video highlights and a screen with the current league standings. It is fairly obvious though that this app was primarily designed to deliver the live game video and not to look up things like stats on your favorite players/teams.

This app is simply a dream come true for the hardcore NBA fan.  It’s only major issue is the league imposed “Blackouts.”  While this product is packaged in such a way that it is both easy to use and very high quality, I think that it going to be hard for many big fans of the NBA to shell out even $20 for an app that doesn’t allow them to see video of their favorite home team!  On the flip side, if you are not in the blackout zone for your favorite team this app could very well be a godsend!

Before you decide either way though I would encourage you to head to the App Store and check out the “Lite” version of the app first.  If you grab it right away it will have full video capability through January 24^th which will allow you to make a clear judgment on whether or not it’s worth it.  So what are you waiting for?  Download yours today!

Moreover Sport News (Free)

REVIEW – “Let the world of sports come to you!”

The App Store has changed so much since it began that it makes my head hurt just thinking of all the popular apps  that have been released!  While there have been several sports apps released, most of them are not nearly as simple as Moreover Sports and it’s free  as well!  If you have been searching for an iPhone app just to keep up on the latest sports news then you should definitely take a look at this one!

While it may take a while to describe the interface of most apps this one is probably one of the most simple that I have reviewed so far!  When you open up the app you will be greeted by a list of all the available categories that you can find news stories for.  On this screen you will not only see a little icon and abrief description of what that option in the menu does.

Touching any of the sports that are listed on the main screen will bring up a list of the newest stories for that particular category.  The categories listed range from football and basketball  all the way down to Cricket and Rugby!  It is also possible to search all of the currently available stories by touching the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the screen and typing its name.there!

Once you’ve selected your category, all of the stories inside of it are shown in a list format.  You’ll notice that beneath each item the app also lists the source that the story comes from!  This is because this app is not really a source of information but rather an aggregator.  You’ll see all kinds of great sources such as ESPN and the USA Today!

While this app could not be easier to use than it is, its feature set is fairly limited.  There are no score trackers of any kind, and no way to view standings and/or game results either.  With that said, if you are the kind of person that just likes to keep up on the latest highlights and news stories this could be exactly what you are looking for.  Another thing I noticed is that while there are a lot of categories to choose from the developers really need to divide them up a little more somehow.  A good example of where this is needed is in the Basketball and Football sections.  They both need to be divided into at least two sections; College and Pro!

In summary, this app is probably not for everyone, but for the casual fan that likes to keep up on sports news it is definitely a winner.  There is no confusing interface to navigate around and it makes it extremely easy to find the latest breaking news stories!  So if you’ve been waiting for an app like this that is no frills and allows you to keep up on sports without wasting a lot of time, then I would encourage you to download this free app today!

myFeeds ($0.99)

REVIEW – “Let the news come to you with this great app!”

News has changed a great deal since the advent of the internet.  One of my favorite ways to keep up with the news is by using what are called RSS feeds.  Most news sites and blogs use them to send out their latest news.  myFeeds is a reader that is designed to work directly from your phone, and it already has a database of pre-entered feeds on various topics.

If you’ve never used an RSS reader then you’re missing out.  The best thing about RSS is that you can then get the web addresses of the feeds from your favorite news sources and get tons of news stories delivered in a fraction of the time that it would take to visit each individual website!  Whether you are a sports junkie, a financial entrepreneur or you just like keeping up on the latest political happenings myFeeds will allow you to spend less time seeking out the news and more time reading it!

The first thing I noticed when I opened this app is the way the interface is set up.  Rather than just putting all of your feeds in a list like many other RSS feeds, all of your feeds are sorted by topics.  When you open this app for the first time you will already have a list full of feeds in various topics like Basketball, US National news and Technology news.

The interface of myFeeds feels natural to anyone that has been using their iPhone/iPod Touch for a while.  There is an “edit” button in the upper right corner that will allow you to reorder or delete your feed topics and/or individual feeds using traditional iPhone controls.  If you want to edit a category or feed all you have to do is touch the blue arrow to the right of it and it brings up a simple dialog box to edit.

Adding feeds is simple if you are familiar with RSS.  All you have to do is go to your favorite website and find their RSS feed.  Then you just open up the category in myFeeds that you want to add your feed to and touch the “Add RSS Feed” button  at the bottom of the screen.  Then all you have to do is enter in a title, put the feed address in the middle box and then a description at the bottom .

While there are a lot of RSS feeders in the app store, some of them free and some of them costly,  this one manages to stay cheap but not work cheap.  This one allows you to not only view feeds but also view the full page for an article if you find it particularly interesting. If you’re still not convinced you can see the basic interface of this app for free with myFeedsLite, and the only feature not available in the Lite version is the ability to Add/Edit/Delete feeds! REVIEW – “Although I haven’t found a way to get myself to the 2010 WC (yet!), I feel content in that I can keep updated with this app.”

The world loves its soccer (or football, as it’s called by everyone else) so it’s no surprise that there is not only an app solely dedicated to the upcoming World Cup or that it’s in the Top 25 after its second week of being released. If you are a soccer fan, this app is amazing!

Where to begin? First of all, the counter – a live counter with the exact time until the World Cup starts. As I sit here and type this, it is currently 172 days, 15 hours, 49 minutes and … yeah. People are that excited and if you are reading this, you are probably one of them. The home page of this app also features a “did you know?” fact – Did you know that Brazil is the only country to appear in every World Cup?, your favorite teams and the menu of the app: teams, news, fixtures/schedule, venue, tournament history – all of these facts and information directly at your fingertips and easy to search.

Each of these options contains a wealth of information – the players, bios, news, stats, upcoming schedules, match ups, the latest news… I was a little overwhelmed at first but I have discovered that a little bit goes a long way. I am slowly going through each of the teams and checking out the player’s bios and past history as I figured that is a good place to start.

In a way, it feels like just yesterday that my boyfriend and I, along with our die-hard English soccer fan friend Nicole were waking up way too early on Saturday morning to head downtown to our favorite pub where the games were shown. And after the 2006 World Cup ended, it was like a small heartbreak that we would have to wait four more years for another one, but here we are (almost). Luckily, in the three plus years that have passed, the iPhone has been invented and is widely used around the world so it makes sense that this app would be as well.

Because of the amount of information contained in the ESPN 2010 World Cup app, I can’t go step-by-step with you through it, I can only tell you that it is worth downloading. Developed and released by ESPN, this app has the WC live ticker at the bottom so that even as you sift through the app and all of its content, you still get information in real time.

If you are as excited about the upcoming 2010 World Cup in Africa as the rest of the world, download this app – it’s free, made by ESPN and has all of the information that you need in one convenient place. Although I haven’t found a way to get myself to the 2010 WC (yet!), I feel content in that I can keep updated with this app. You can too.

Serious tennis players have probably wondered when an application would come along that would genuinely give them insights into the state of their games.

Such players may want to track a history of their matches, study results (perhaps see how they have fared against a particular player, etc.), and identify trends, streaks, and other indicators. Through statistics that reveal whether they have been able to close out matches (after initially being ahead), or successfully win tie-breaks, or escape with victory (after initially struggling), players can zero in on their strengths and weaknesses.

Such an application now exists: My Tennis Buddy (MTB), from Opus Mobile Technologies performs all of these tasks and more – for just $3.99.

Touch Hockey: F5 (Free)

REVIEW – “This is a great version of the classic arcade game and you don’t have to worry about losing the puck!”

Playing air hockey was always one of my favorite games to play as a kid and still today I find myself having a great time playing it with my brother (even if he is likely to launch the puck halfway across the arcade). Touch Hockey brings all that fun and excitement right to your iphone so that you can have it with you everywhere you go.

The great thing about Touch Hockey is that it very easily allows for multiplayer play. This can be done either by using the same phone or over the WiFi. The way to do this is go into settings and pick which style of multiplayer play you would like. I tried this out with my husband and the animations were right in time and the game played flawlessly, I was very impressed.

To play all you do is move your finger wherever you want to block the puck. It responds easily enough and I readily enjoyed playing even when it was just me against the computer.

The sounds were also perfect which I appreciated, anything to make my iphone feel just like the real thing is great.

Now there are a number of cool things about this app that are found under settings. Here you can chance the volume of the sounds, the amount of air on the table, the amount of points you play to and even how big the goals are. (This is great for when a more experienced player is going against a beginner).

There is also a feature that is the instant replay which after every point it will slowly take you through it so you can see exactly where you scored or failed to block. Personally I found this feature very annoying so I was glad when I saw that it can be turned off in the settings mode.

Now I played around with the free version and it is the full version of the game but you do have to suffer through some ads here and there. This does not affect game play in any way, but if it does bother you, you can purchase the full version for $.99.

All in all I think this a great game. It’s simple and fun to play and for the price you really cannot go wrong!
