This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Emergency & Critical Care Pocket Guide ($9.99)

Review – “Great critical care reference for any medical professional!”

A lot of medical professionals carry pocket guides that contain various information that they might need in the field. For years Informed has been a large provider of these small pocket-sized guides, and now they are bringing these great resources directly to your mobile device!

Previously all of these medical resources were released in a simple PDF format much like a lot of digital book formats like you see today. While it was not a bad format, Informed is now releasing all of their apps in a way that allows you to interact with and search for the material that you’re looking for!

When you open up this app the first screen you’ll see is the Topics screen. This is a great way to quickly find information. Touching any available topic will bring up all of the related information. For example, touching the “Medical Emergencies” topic will bring up a list of items to choose from that include Abdominal pain, Abuse, Childbirth, Choking, and many more.

Once you find what you want and open up you’ll find that the information in this app is not just boring data, it is laid out with all kinds of caps, punctuation, bullets and even pictures in some cases. You’ll even find links to things within the app when applicable. For example, in some of the articles you’ll find links to the poison control center. Touching these links will place a phone call to their headquarters for you.

You’ll also find a variety of different calculators in this app. It includes everything from a simple conversion calculator that handles temperature, weight, volume and length, down to a variety of different Pediatric calculators. The interfaces for the calculator’s were very easy to understand and use, and they also work very quickly!

The third button in the menu at the bottom of the screen is the “Search/Bookmarks” button. Touching this brings up a list of all your current bookmarks to choose from. Touching any of them will take you directly to the page that you were on when you created them.

In the upper left corner of the “Search/Bookmarks” screen you’ll see a little magnifying glass. Touching this button will open up a search bar where you can search for anything. This is a great feature that will allow you to quickly find the exact information you are looking for. The searches work in real time as well so there is no waiting to load search results.

If you find yourself carrying a paper version of this or a similar emergency reference then you’ll definitely want to check out this app. If you’re just not that present that usually carries around a reference maybe this would be a good time to start! Informed RN Pocket Guide ($9.99)

Review – “A great guide for nurses that is truly pocket sized!”

There are good things and bad things about electronic references. The good thing about them is the fact that you can have a virtually limitless amount of information packed into a very small device. The problem with them tends to be that the more information you pack in, the more difficult they become to navigate. Informed Publishing has addressed this by integrating great information with a simple interactive interface!

When you open up the RN Pocket Guide you’ll see a small menu bar at the bottom of the screen with four buttons. The button on the left of this menu will bring up a list of all the topics that are covered within this app. There are all kinds of topics covered from Cardiac and Respiratory down to Mental Health and Gastrointestinal.

When you find the topic that you need information on, touching it will bring up a list of articles to read. What really makes this app great though is that the information itself is interactive. If the article you’re reading mentions a test that you might want to perform it will give you a link to that test within the app, or if it references a phone number it will give you a link to dial that phone number directly.

Besides the articles full of information, this app also offers a variety of different medical calculators. You can access the full list of them by touching the “Calculators” button at the bottom of the screen. Many of them are also available from within various information in the “Topics” section as well.

Another great feature of this app is the “Search/Bookmarks” feature. Anytime you find and are reading an article that you think you might need later, you can add a bookmark to it by touching the “+” button at the bottom of the screen. You can then access your list of bookmarks either from the main menu or by touching the bookmark button from within an article.

You can switch from bookmarks to the search feature by touching the icon in the upper right corner of the screen. As you type information into the search bar you’ll see live updates of information below. Touching any of the articles that pop up will take you straight to them. This makes it extremely easy to quickly find information on a particular topic. No hunting through topics and subtopics, just type one good key word and head there directly!

If you’re a nurse and you have or used to carry a pocket guide of some sort, this is an app that you should definitely check out. The Linden Method ($99.99)

Review – “Anti-Anxiety and Panic Disorder Program, now on iPhone & iPad”

For sufferers of Anxiety Disorders (such as OCD, General Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Agoraphobia, PTSD, etc), it may feel hopeless to find a solution on your own. Most people seek out medical help for relief, and while Anxiety can be a telltale sign of a host of mental conditions, you there may be a solution to battling this on your own.

Even this App, and the entire system (which up until this month was availble by download or CD/Book purchase) notes, right from the start, that this is not a replacement for seeking out a medical or mental health professional. However, if you’re looking to try and alleviate your anxiety and are determined, focused and motivated to try on your own, The Linden Method could be an excellent guide for you, and possible cure.

The method itself was created a dozen years ago by Charles Linden, an anxiety sufferer himself, and the entire introduction to this App is his story. It’s absolutely worth the read, because it will help you relate to the material knowing that it was created by someone with similar issues. While he’s not a mental health professional, he has spent years working with and for anxiety sufferers coming up with and creating (by popular opinion) the best non-medical treatment for Anxiety Disorders.

The App offers the entire Linden method which includes several videos, first explaining the origin of where Anxiety comes from, our body’s reaction, physical symptoms, and information on how the Linden Method helps one overcome these. Which is actually based on a Behavioral Science learning process called Operant Conditioning.

You start with an introduction and instructions. How to use this program. There are Nine Pillars – and they’re basically the mandatory requirements for following the program. Each Pillar has it’s own video to explain exactly what to do. These are the rules, basically, follow them (with the selected material within the program) and this is how it all comes together to help you.

There are specific videos for certain disorders, and entire 6 Day program for sufferers of Agoraphobia. There are visualization exercises as well as several audio guides and “Apps” within the App which help with on-the spot treatment for various issues: The Panic Eliminator, The Anxiety Stopwatch, BreatheRight Exercise & the Panic Attack Talkdown. All of which can be used as a mobile arsenal for the Panic sufferer, giving them comfort that help is with them at all times. These individual Apps should be available shortly themselves in the iTunes Store as well – should you want to try one out before the entire program.

While you don’t have access to the Linden Centre Staff, you do have the option to purchase their services, so that you have a personal contact, an expert in anxiety, available to you. More information can be found on the Linden Method website.

It’s obvious that many, many years of research and dedication went into not only creating the Method itself, but putting it all together in this App.

I can’t speak to the effectiveness of the program as I’ve only had it for a couple days, for that you can find lots of testimonials online, but I can say that I will definitely be continuing to use this and recommending it to others as a possible solution to various Anxiety Disorders. Although it may be expensive, think that if it’s effective, it’s absolutely worth the price – and is available on all iOS Devices, iPod Touch, iPhone & iPad. See the links below.

Faces iMake ($0.99)

REVIEW – “An app that will help get your creative juices flowing!”

If you’re a parent then you know that you can never have too many things handy to keep them occupied. The Faces iMake app is a tool that will not only stretch your child’s creative abilities, but it can also be a lot of fun as well! The basic idea is that you get a variety of different objects that range from simple clothing items like buttons

to all kinds of fruits and vegetables. Using these objects you create faces that you can save and show people!

In all honesty, while this game is really aimed at kids, I found it to be a fun little diversion as well. This could very well be the type of game that could be fun to play with a group of people and see what you can come up with. There are so many different objects and backgrounds that the possibilities

are endless!

When you open up Faces iMake you’ll see a blank face in the main area of the screen with a menu below it. One of the first things you should do is touch the “Menu” button in the lower left corner and then press the “Lessons” button in the small menu above it. This will bring up a list of 6 different videos to watch that will give you a feel for different ways to be creative and also how to use the apps controls. I found these videos really helped with the creative process, and they also helped to make sure I understood how everything works

From this “Menu” you can also access the “Settings” menu which will allow you to turn the music and sound effects for the app on or off. The other options here are for saving your work, clearing you current face and starting over, and view your “Gallery” of saved

images. if at any time you would like to be able to use the full screen without the menus you can do that by touching the little arrow just above the menu on the right side of the screen.

Once you’re ready to start creating your face you’ll find a variety of things to use. The first two little buttons to the right of the “Menu” button are “Colors,” and “Heads.” These two options are pretty obvious. They allow you to set the background color of your picture and the head shape that you will work from!

Something that is not totally obvious if you do not watch the tutorial videos is

that there are a lot more categories available than those that you see by default in the menu. To scroll through all of the different prop categories all you have to do is touch and drag the menu bar at the bottom of the screen. You’ll find all kinds of things from toys, to food, buttons, letters and even a “Favorites” category where you can place all of your most commonly used items!

Part of what makes this app so much fun is the random nature of the things that you use to make faces. I found that it was a lot of fun to just grab several random objects and see what I could come up with! The great thing is that there are so many objects to choose from, and so many colors and face shapes that your kids could literally spend hours playing with this! Whether you are concerned for yourself or a family member having quick access to reliable information is always a great help. With Symptom Checker you can look up more than 40 symptoms and find out how to treat them, and when it might be time to visit a doctor.

There are a number of things about this app that really work and the first is that it separates symptoms into children and adults. This is very important because the same symptom could mean completely different things and could be much more serious for children rather than adults, or vice versa.

Once you get past that screen you can easily find the symptom you are looking to find more information about. The app then gives you information on how to treat the problem, what warning signs to look out for and when it is best to consult a doctor. This feature can save you wasted doctor’s visits and make sure you get to the doctor when you really need to.

Like any app that is built from a website it also gives you easy access to much of the vast tomes of information that you can find on the Mayo Clinic website. You can get further information on specific illness or problems, as well as information about how to get the right treatment and where to go.

The app even gives you information about the Mayo Clinic itself including a way to schedule an appointment or to have all those questions you have always wondered about the Mayo Clinic answered.

I was surprised to find this app because like many people when I think of finding out more information about symptoms or problems, WebMD is usually my first stop. But this app is very useful, although I would like to see it expanded a little more, but for a free app it is not half bad and it does give great information.

REVIEW – “Keep track of your pregnancy, contractions, kicks and so much more!”

Since discovering that my husband and I are pregnant I have been searching for just about any and all resources that can help make the process easier. BabyBump is a great app that can help you through any stage of the pregnancy even up to the birth itself.

When you open the app you are asked for basic information such as your name and your due date or last menstrual period. I thought it was a little strange that it asked for my name, as if I would forget but I guess it someone wanted to keep track of a friend’s pregnancy.

From there you get a countdown of how far along you are and a timeline of how long until your due date. If you got to weekly info you are given tons of great information and pictures. You will get a picture of what is going on inside your body as well as what your baby looks like. It will also give you an idea of just how big your baby is.

It even gives you the option to add your own picture so that you can keep track of the inside and the outside throughout your pregnancy.

You can then go to journal and keep track of all those important moments of your pregnancy. For those who are particularly brave you can keep track of  your growing measurements and your thoughts. You can even put in when you have a doctor’s appointment and ask the app to remind you whenever you sign in so that you don’t forget.

Other great features are kick counters and contraction counters to an entire section on birth. You can watch a video of what your baby has to go through when it starts to make its way out and just what is happening every time you feel one of those painful contractions.

The amount of information that this app offers is amazing and that fact that you can customize the look based on the sex of the baby or the season that it is due, is a fun little feature.

Normally I would say that $4.99 is pricey for an app but the amount of features and information that this app offers is truly worth the price. Having all that info and picture with me is great, because one thing that always comes when people find out that you are pregnant, are tons of questions. Keeping track also helps create great memories that you will treasure once the pregnancy has come and gone.

Accidents happen and now you can rest assured that when they do happen you will know what to do. Pocket First Aid & CPR includes all the medical information you need to know when someone gets injured. This will help to keep you calm and ready to tackle any situation.

The great this about this app is that it is easy to use and brings you right to the information you need. This can be a great relief during an emergency because it allows you to remain calm and easily find the information you need without being stressed out and panicking.

When you open the app you are taken to a list of all the problems covered by the app. From CPR to broken bones, to insect bites to how to safely help someone in a dangerous situation. The list is very extensive going all the way from severe problems like stroke and heart attack to common problems like colds and allergies.

Once you find the topic that applies to your situation you are then given clear, easy to understand, step by step instructions on what to do. The app highlights terms you may not know and you simply tap them in order to get more information. Some of the situations also include videos so that you can truly see what you are supposed to do.

Another great feature is that it allows you to create profiles for everyone in your family. These profiles allow you to keep track of everyone’s medical history so that if anything happens you will be able to tell the doctors everything they need to know.

I think this is a great app to have on hand because this is information that everyone should know, especially parents, but we might not remember it all, especially during an emergency situation. Being able to stay calm and have all that information right at hand can make all the difference.

But for many of these procedures you will need to have a first aid kit, so make sure to pick one up if you do not already have one.

This app is definitely well worth the price because it covers just about every situation and gives you easy to follow and understand instructions that even a child could follow.

Have you ever wondered what you would like with a nose job?  Or maybe a tummy tuck or breast augmentation?  Well now you can find out with iSurgeon PRO!  This app features a “Game” mode that will teach you how to use this app to simulate realistic looking plastic surgery on photos you have taken with your iPhone.

When you open this app you will be greeted by the doctor that was behind the production of this app Dr. Michael Salzhauer.  He will introduce himself and welcome you to iSurgeon PRO.  Once you touch the screen you will be taken to the main menu.  There are two surgery modes, instructions and a high score list to choose from.

If you are playing with this app for the first time you need to head to the “Game Mode” first.  In game mode there are four different “operations” that you can “perform.”  Once you select the one you want you will be taken to a photo of the “patient.”  At the top of the screen are four buttons that allow you exit  back to the menu, undo your last action, read the instructions, and a “Done” button for when you finish.  At the bottom of the screen is a bar showing how much time you have left and a button to view your patients “ideal” plastic surgery

In order to win the “game” you need to get your patient to look as close to the “ideal” surgery picture as possible.  You do this by touching and dragging anywhere on the screen.  As you touch and drag, the screen will “stretch” in the direction that you are dragging.  At first it does not seem possible to get good results with such a simple method of editing, but you will start to get the hang of it quickly.

For anyone that has never edited photos before, this is a great tutorial for using this kind of effect because it gives you an example of what you are looking for.  And for people that really are considering plastic surgery, maybe this is a way that you could get an idea of what you would look like if you really did go through with it.  With that said, this is more likely just a fun way to learn about and enjoy touching up photos, which in itself is probably worth the $0.99 that this app costs.  So what are you waiting for?  Check out iSurgeon in the App Store today!

Before there was medical insurance, before the internet, before all of the technology that we currently have, there was The Merck Manual. First published in 1899 as Merck’s Manual of the Materia Medica, present-day it has come full circle and is now an iPhone app entitled The Merck Manual Home Edition. With a range of topics from the common cold to bee stings; cardiac arrest to STD’s and everything in between, The Merck Manual is the ultimate guide to any medical question you may have and the iPhone app is the ultimate solution to carry around wherever you may go.

The home screen of the app allows you to search by a specific category: blood disorder, cancer, skin disorders, etc; by the index; or probably the most convenient category: emergencies and injuries, which has things like choking, poisoning, burns, etc. The home screen also allows you type anything into the search bar and a list of articles and related topics will come up. In addition to all of the search options, a random fact is displayed where you will also have the option to learn more about that particular topic. The searching options on this app are great. Whether you want to search by name, index, disease, etc – all of the options are covered and they make it very easy to find what you are looking for.

I particularly liked the Emergencies and Injuries section. Any common household will have the need for this app. Shortly after I downloaded this app, my mom was stung by a bee so I searched the related topic, took a screen shot of what it said and emailed it to my mom. It was easy and quick and did exactly what it needed to do.

In addition to all of the search options and information that The Merck Manual has, you can also add any of the articles as a “favorite” so that you can easily search at any time. All of the favorites are stored as a list and easily accessible at any time.

The Merck Manual is a great buy for anyone who has ever looked up a medical term, condition or symptoms. It’s similar to searching the internet but instead of filtering through your searches to find something that is relevant, you can search The Merck Manual and have only things that are relevant. You may be thinking that 9.99 is a little steep, but the life-saving advice that is contained within this app has no price tag – it is worth every penny, especially on the off-chance that you save someone’s life.

REVIEW – “Get wise, at least a little, with Wisen Up”
 

Wisen Up is the most random, portable encyclopedia you can find. Maybe encyclopedia is too ambitious, but there is fairly vast collection of information. Oddly enough, most of it relates to medicine. Stick with me here.

You navigate Wisen Up by spinning a ring to select the item you wish to view. Content includes ancient cures, medical quizzes, funny medical snippets, information about daily oddities (like why do we sneeze), myths, a list of strange and incurable diseases, amazing body facts, types of doctors, a fear name directory, first aid mistakes, body language reference and personality quizzes.

The personality quizzes will be of most interest to the Facebook quiz fanatics. After completing a quiz on what type of god you would be or if you are a ladies man, the app will upload the results to your Facebook page for you. Wisen Up features 28 personality quizzes, none are at all serious.

But the app’s bulk is based in medical facts and oddities. The funny medical snippets include items taken from patient records along with medical jokes. Read a quick medical record update explaining how a patient was released to outpatient department without dressing, and then enjoy a Steve Martin joke. Use the “Tell Me Why” feature if you’d rather know why medical oddities happen in the first place.

The list of myths is also heavily weighted toward health and medicine, and pairs nicely with the ancient cures as both provide insight into commonly held untruths.

Then you can proceed to check out the amazing body facts, where you can learn that if you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. If you need more information on the strange and incurable things that happen to our bodies, use the incurable diseases database and learn all about face blindness and Capgras syndrome. There is even a “type of doctors” list to help you pair an imaginary doctor with your newly discovered rare disease.

All of this information overload will definitely help you take the quizzes on medicine to rank your doctor level. A 60% will make you an intern, keep taking the quizzes to move on up. As with the personality quizzes, these results can be posted to Facebook with the tap of a button.

While the main menu of Wisen Up is a ring, each individual feature is seemingly menu-less. If you want to look at a new piece of information, fun fact or quiz question, simply tap the screen. The house in the upper left corner will take you home, and the arrow at the bottom of the screen will pop up the full menu for you, letting you email, post to Facebook or add to favorites.

Every screen of Wisen Up is a greenish-yellow and the drawings that accompany some facts are simple line drawings that get boring to look at. This app could use a visual upgrade to make using it more enjoyable. By the time you finish taking one personality quiz you are fed up with the green screen.

Wisen Up is a good buy for the person who is addicted to WebMD. The medical facts, trivia and quizzes will keep you entertained for a long time. If you only want quizzes to post to Facebook, keep looking as Wisen Up has a limited number of these at this time.

 REVIEW—”WebMD is a physician in your hands!”

WebMD is truly like a physician in your hands, but STOP, that doesn’t mean that you can diagnosis and treat yourself. I would consider WebMD an application that allows users to be more aware of their bodies AND to better communicate themselves with their physicians. Therefore, following any type of symptoms up with a trip to your doc is highly recommended and even encouraged by WebMD itself. That being said this is a wicked cool app that is great for any user.

By entering your age, location, and biological sex, WebMD works to allow users to point out their body’s problem areas and their symptoms. WebMD then works to offer the user medical solutions that might ease their uncomforting state and recommends medical physicians in their area that could be of assistance in a proper diagnosis. However, it’s important to note that some treatments are simple and can be self treated, like how to treat a twisted ankle. Others should be followed up with a physician or specialized practitioner.

WebMD also gives complete medical information about drugs, how they are to be consumed and under what circumstances. It also gives you a complete explanation of your diagnosis so that you might be understand it, and determine if the symptoms stated really connect with the diagnosis.

In addition to checking symptoms and offering drug and treatment information, WebMD also offers First Aid information. It is important to note that learning CPR in the moment is not useful. This is not a feature to wait to learn how to navigate. It’s more like a step-by-step manual that should be read ahead of time. Someone choking on food doesn’t have time to wait for WebMD to launch for you to learn the Heimlich. All of that being said, WebMD is a useful app that you should considering adding to your collection.

REVIEW – “Eponyms? If you don’t know what it means, don’t bother”

I’ll help you out with this one. An eponym is a word that is derived from a person’s name. Eponyms For Students is meant for medical students, so the eponyms on this app are medical. Cooper’s hernia, Guyon’s tunnel and the loop of Henle are all available on Eponyms For Students.

The app features over 1,600 medical eponyms. The first time you open the app it quickly loads the database and then everything is accessible even without an internet connection.

The main screen allows you to choose how you want to search for eponyms. Users have the option of looking at all eponyms, or eponyms from specific categories of the medical field. Users can also select to see recently viewed eponyms, or a list they have created themselves.

Once you have selected how you want to access the eponyms you are given an alphabetical list of all the eponyms. Tap one and you’ll be given the definition and what medical fields the word is pertinent to. These fields are abbreviated, so you have to know what you are dealing with to use this app. Actually, that statement goes for the whole app. You are probably a medical student if you are interested in looking up the meanings of eponyms. Unlike a medical dictionary, this app features only things named after people. So using it to look up a condition or symptom isn’t possible – unless it is named after someone. Eponyms For Students is very narrow in its audience, but it’s probably very useful to them.

There is a search feature, which is easy to use by simply tapping the magnifying glass. The entire app is easy to use, but somewhat boring to look at. Very gray and black and white. But again, how interesting can a list of medical eponyms really be?

The most powerful feature of Eponyms For Students is the ability to mark certain words. If you tap the star in the upper right hand corner of any definition, it will add it to a “starred eponyms” list. Then, from the main screen you can look through the list of starred entries. Very useful for anyone needing a specific list, like for studying.

Overall, the average user isn’t going to find any use for Eponyms For Students. The resourceful medical student however…

REVIEW—”Epocrates is like a pharmacy in your pocket, only legal. ”

Epocrates is a great app with amazing details and features. From the beginning I must note that such an app only seems to be really beneficial to those in the medical field that are exposed to and prescribe different medicines and on an everyday basis.

Epocrates is continually updated with the latest medical information thus keeping medical practitioners in the loop and on the cusp of an ever changing and in many ways revolutionary medical world! Joining Epocrates is free, simply establish a username and password and the medical world is all yours, metaphorically speaking, of course.

Epocrates gives users information on dosage, cautions, and anticipated ill reactions to the medication, the price of the medicine and what it looks like. Epocrates also shows users pictures of what particular infections look like so that might better diagnose a patient. It also gives professionals alternatives to mainstream medications that would not only assist in expanding their clientele, but might even save patients money, which is always a bonus anywhere!

Epocrates is an easy to navigate app with icons that are not only self-descriptive but labeled so that users know exactly what information to expect. I’m no medical professional. I’m not even close to being a science geek, but I think Epocrates is an app that in itself is revolutionary. It allows doctors and other medical professionals to have a series of medical books and years of textbook knowledge in the palm of their hands. Not only that, but receiving the latest medical updates in medicine means that no matter where patients were or what resources their medical care provider had available, their provider could at least point them in the right direction of access.

REVIEW – “Keeping Doctors up to date!”

Most doctors have one thing in common and that is that they are very busy! With so many different options in the app store for getting up to date information about various medical practices how are they supposed to sift through them all and find which ones offer the information they need? Well for those busy doctor’s this app will slim down the process.

The most unique thing about this app is that rather than supply you with vast amounts of information, it gives you select “tips” and there is a great deal of information and full length articles behind each one of them. The first thing that you see once you are logged into this app is a quick splash screen with an ad. It is not intrusive and is very easy to skip through, remember, this app is free!

Once you make it past the opening page you are taken to the “New Tip” page. This page will show you the first section of the newest “tip” and give you the option to go straight to the full text of the article if it interests you. In the upper right corner of the screen you will find a “+” button. This allows you to bookmark where you are at in this article and also in any other article you might be reading with this app. Your bookmarks can be easily accessed at any time by pressing the “Bookmarks” tab at the bottom of the screen.

The other tabs at the bottom of the screen will allow you find information you are looking for. The “All Tips” tab shows you all of the tips for the specialty that you have selected under the “info” tab. I would have appreciated more descriptive titles, or maybe even some pictures on this page, but the way it is set up does make it very quick to browse through a large number of tips. The “Search” tab works exactly as expected, but it is a little slow, especially if you are on the edge network because it is searching over the internet.

With all of that said, I have pretty much detailed everything there is about this app. Unlike most of the applications in this genre, this app is very to the point and can be quickly looked over. It does all of this, and yet still manages to bring a wealth of in depth information on a variety of topics.

This app is not without its problems though. For one thing, I really disliked the fact that if you choose to view the full text of an article, you cannot do so within the app. Instead you are taken to Safari where, most of the time, you will view a PDF of the article. It would have also been nice to be able to browse information on a variety of topics without changing your “specialty” in the info section. All of that said, this app is easy to use, and has a lot of good information, and I would recommend it to doctors or also to anyone that likes keeping up on current medical information.

REVIEW – “Medical News on the Go!”

If you are looking for medical news in a user-friendly format, then look no further. MedPage Today Mobile has exactly what you are looking for. This application doesn’t have a lot of the “frills” of other similar apps, but what it does have is medical news, in a very easy to read format.

When you open this app you are greeted by the home screen. There is no menu bar at the bottom with various ways to view the information, only a “specialties” button and an “options” button. The news stories that you see on this opening screen are the “Latest News” stories from various categories. Clicking on any of them will take you directly to the article, and also give you a link to the MedPage website to get more information if you want to.
Under the “Options” menu you are able to select which page the application will default to. You can either leave it on the “Latest News” or select from a list of specialties. If you really just want to keep up with the latest in Genetics, you can easily set it to default to the “Genetics” page everytime you open the app.

The “Specialties” button in the lower right hand corner allows you to quickly and easily switch to the page of any specialty or to the “Latest News” page. This is one of the things that sets this app apart from many of the other medical apps. It is just so much easier to view news on a variety of topics. There are really no menus to wade through, all of the information is just right there at your fingertips.

Another great feature is that many of the articles come with audio. This allows you to easily absorb the information on the go. The audio is a little bit grainy, but is easily understood and downloads very quickly. I did have the application crash on me once or twice when trying to listen to audio, or leave an audio feed to go back to reading. Because of this it is apparent that there may be some memory leak problems with the audio in this app.

All of that said, this app is an excellent easy to use source of medical information, and I would recommend it to anyone, especially doctors and nurses. Keep in mind though that all of the information in this app comes from the same source. Besides the slight glitches I had with the audio though, this app runs smoothly and is very easy to use.

Contrary to what many people may think, just being a doctor or a nurse does not mean that you are automatically able to pronounce every drug known to man. If are constantly in a situation where you need to be able to pronounce them, or if maybe you’re just curious about the drugs you have been prescribed, this app may be for you!

The interface of this app is extremely simple. When you open the app, you are greeted by a long list of drug names. At the right is a bar with the alphabet that you can touch to go directly to a letter and at the top is a search bar. Basically the way this app works is you find the drug you would like information on and press it. Once you have selected a drug you can press the “play” button to hear it pronounced, or select “Google” or “Wikipedia” to get more information about it.

This app provides a very easy to use browser within the app, so you won’t have to constantly leave and rerun the app to get information on a variety of drugs and their uses. At the bottom of the browser you have a “forward,” “back,” “refresh,” “stop,” and even a “Safari” button to leave the app and view the page in Safari. When you finish with that drug you can easily go back and find another one by pressing the arrow in the upper left corner.

This “Lite” version of the app comes with over 200 different drugs. If you are a doctor, or if you are just way too interested in drugs (hmm…) the full version of this app has over 2500 drugs in it! This app is easy to use, and if you deal with drugs on a regular basis can be a very handy tool to have around. I would highly recommend it to doctors and patients alike!
