Review – “A great distraction for all ages!”

One of my favorite types of games are those that I can start up quickly and play for a few minutes just for a little distractions, and I’ve found that Tap-a-Sack is an excellent fit in this category! Not only is it extremely easy to play, but there are no menu’s or options to sift through. You just open the app and start tapping!

The basic idea of Tap-a-Sack is that you have to keep tapping the sacks on the screen to keep them in the air. It’s kind of like Hackey Sack on your iDevice, except in this game you’ll be using your fingers instead of your feet! When you get started you’ll have just one sack, but things get hectic quickly if you don’t lose it as more sacks are added to the mix!

The main gameplay screen is simple. At the bottom you’ll find three numbers thatrepresent the highest score you’ve achieved since you opened the app, what your current score is, and the score of your last game.

While Tap-a-Sack may seem a little too simplistic on the surface, it’s really a breath of fresh air for someone that is just looking for a simple distraction. It has a couple of nice touches as well. You’ll see fireworks in the background as you make it further into the game, and you can send your high scores directly to Facebook!

To sum it all up, if what you’re looking for is a complex game that will make you think you should look elsewhere. If; however, you’re looking for a game that you can just pick up for a few minutes, or that can be played by people of all ages, you may want to check out Tap-a-Sack. iBounce -Original ($1.99)

Imagine for a second that you review games, and that you were given Rock-Paper-Scissors to review. What can you say about something so elemental? It’s more a game mechanic than a game, but you can talk about it’s simplicity, how easy the rules are, how there’s a surprisingly deep layer of strategy that requires you to out-think your opponent and can even try to lay traps for your opponent.

Hmm… You know, now that I think about it, you can do a lot with a review of Rock-Paper-Scissors…

But how do you review something even simpler? iBounce is one such game. To play the game you shake your iPhone back and forth quickly, bouncing a ball off the sides of the screen to get points.

That’s it. Shake your iPhone, get some points. It’s simple, I’ll give it that. I was very surprised OpenFeint connected with the game. I can’t imagine there a huge demand for shake-your-iPhone leader boards, or even a small one for that matter, but I’ve never been big on the shake-to-shuffle feature, so I guess it takes all kinds.

One interesting thing I do have to mention about the game is the seasonal updates. If you look on the App Store, the pictures are of an orange ball bouncing around an outdoor scene with blue sky and green grass. The version I have, as you can see from the screen caps, is a Halloween edition, with an eyeball bouncing around a dark, moonlight night.

I can only imagine that there will also be updates for Christmas (a snowball or jingle bell, maybe?) and Easter (putting a literal Easter egg in the game would be a nice meta-commentary in a game with nothing else going on).

But unless you have some odd compulsion (or nothing better to do with your iPhone than give it to your toddler), you will left sorely wanting more. Shake your iPhone for 10 seconds, get some points and maybe share that score through OpenFeint? I wouldn’t pay $2 for it, but you might.

The Ultimate Retro Rally (SALE PRICE – $0.99)

I’ve never really gotten into racing games all that much. I mean, if I wanted to race, I’d get in my car and race. It’s the same reason I’m not really into sports games in general. There is, however, a subset of racing games that I have always really liked, and that’s arcade racing games. You know, games where realism is completely thrown out the window and you’re doing crazy stuff and where physics is ignored for the sake of gameplay.

One of my favorites back in the 8-bit days was RC Pro Am. For those of you who never played it, you raced around a track in one of 4 RC cars, upgrading your cars as you progressed and ramming your opponents or using weapons to otherwise disable or destroy the opposing cars. It was great!

Retro Rally brings that kind of feeling back, making for a very accessible and easy toplay racing game where you get to drive, ram, missile and mine your way to victory with 30 races over 10 different tracks.

The game’s control scheme is easy to get around, with only left, right, accelerate, brake, fire missiles and drop mines. The ingeniousness of the controls, however, is being able to set up the controls how you want. You can either use the accelerometer or onscreen buttons to control left, right, accelerate and brake, and, better still, you can set it up so that buttons control acceleration and braking while the accelerometer controls left and right, or vice versa. The game also gives you a choice about the camera angle, centering on the car with the road moving, or centering on the road with the card moving. The degree of freedom in deciding what control scheme you’re most comfortable with is one of the high points of the game.

The graphics very simple, with 2D models that look fine on my iPhone’s Retina Display, although they don’t look special, either, reminding me of the old 8-bit days.  One of the neatest flourishes the game features is the main menu. While most iOS games feature static menu screens, Retro Rally features a full-motion main menu that shows the cars racing around the track. While not important, it is a nice feature, and something that demonstrates a certain dedication to quality on the part of the makers.

Another point of interest is how the game’s AI is pretty tight. The first few races the AI racers take it easy, but in short order they start gunning for you (and each other) without remorse. The racetrack becomes nothing short of a war zone, and I haven’t seen AI be this vicious shy of Skynet. I still haven’t been able to beat the third race of the first track with all of the missiles and mines flying around.

And that’s a problem. While I am proud of my roots in gaming, I’m still, especially these days, a more casual gamer. While I do enjoy a challenge, I’m far more interested in just having fun, and getting blown up every few feet isn’t exactly fun. As such, being able to change the difficulty setting would be nice.

A feature the game doesn’t have that I would like is the ability to mod my car. While, ideally, this might be to give weapons or armor, just the ability to customize the car would be a nice addition, to personalize it and make it YOUR car.

The developer has described the game as a “community type experiment”, which he says means that he’s developing it to order, basically. You tell him what you want in the game, and he’ll add it, and has stated that multiplayer and more tracks are forthcoming. Those are welcome additions, and I’m hoping he’ll add difficulty settings and an ability to mod the car. If nothing else, it would be great to have my car just look different from other cars in multiplayer.

With it being on sale for half-off and the promise of more goodness to come, Retro Rally seems like a good bargain.

Road Hog ($0.99)

I mentioned in another review that racing games weren’t really my thing, but that I do love arcade racing games. Of those, my all time favorite stands out as Bump ‘n Jump. I loved running people off the road or into obstacles, while jumping over and around obstacles and landing on cars, crushing them and driving off unharmed. It was great! I’m still waiting for it to make it’s iOS debut (I’m looking at you, Majesco!)

Until that glorious day, though, we’ve got Road Hog. Road Hog is a 3rd person overhead racer, where you drive around obstacles while trying to pick up stars and power-up cubes. There are several different power-up cubes; a heath cube that gives you one heart, an invincibility cube, a weapon cube that allows you to shoot an oncoming obstacle and a freeze cube that slows things down allowing you to movearound obstacles easier. There’s also a mystery cube that will give you a random effect, including one of those good effects above or a couple of negative effects like flickering the lights or reversing the controls for a few seconds.

And then there’s the jumping, because you CAN jump. However, you don’t jump very high or far. I found out the hard way that there are only a couple of obstacles that you can actually jump over – if you try to jump over most obstacles you will instead jump right into them. Instead, jumping is mostly used to pick up stars or power-up cubes that are floating in mid-air. To make matters worse, to jump you need to touch the screen. However, to move your car you also need to touch the screen. As such, if you take your finger off the screen for a second and then touch the screen to move, you may jump into an obstacle instead of moving around it as you intended. As such it might be better to have an actual jump button.

However, this one issue aside, the controls are very tight. Just touch the screen and move your finger around to move your car around obstacles. The button to activate the cube abilities is on the top left, meaning that, if you’re holding your iPhone in your left hand the button is a perfect fit for your thumb.

As a bonus, in addition to keeping track of local scores and being able to post your scores to your Facebook account,Road Hog also has its own international leaderboard, keeping track of the top 100 players. Don’t expect to see me on the list. It’ll take me a few more weeks of playing before I get to those vaulted levels.

And lastly the graphics look great on the Retina Display, running smooth and looking crisp. There is one problem in that, thanks to the color scheme and lighting, some of the obstacles are hard to see, meaning it can be hard to get around them.

All told, Road Hog is no Bump ‘n Jump, but, despite it’s flaws, it still manages tight controls and crisp graphics, with gameplay that is smooth and easy. If you’re still not sure it’s worth a buck, give the free version a spin. If nothing else, I think you’ll agree it’ll help bide the time until those Data East classics finally find a home on the iDevices.

Aliens Need Brains ($1.99)

Did you ever play the game Beachhead 2000? I’m not talking about the PC version, but the arcade version, where you have to put on a helmet and rotate around to shoot the bad guys?  It was a lot of fun to be staring out of my visor onto the battlefield and mowing down wave after wave of enemy, rotating left and right as if I were in a real gun emplacement.  It gave the game a sense of reality because you actually had to rotate your body to track and shoot, like virtual reality.

Aliens Need Brains brings back some of that feeling with a gameplay style very reminescent of Beachhead, with a few interesting twists.  In this case, instead of fighting against a oncoming army, you are fighting against aliens who are after your brain.  Why they’re after your brain I can’t imagine, but who cares?  There are 6 different kinds of aliens, which have a character design I haven’t seen before.  Well, kinda.  I suppose they look like a cross between the aliens from Mars Attacks and zombies. 

Instead of playing in first-person view, you play in third-person, with the camera tucked behind a young man shooting through wave after wave of oncoming aliens.  At your disposal are 7 different weapons (though for any given wave you can only equip three of them), ranging from a standard pulsar (pistol), mega pulsar (machine gun) or blaster (shotgun), to more esoteric and clearly homemade weapons like a “foozuka” (a bazooka with an explosive football head). To further help your chances, your pulsar and your character can be upgraded with the money you earn killing aliens, while the other weapons all use ammo that you can spend money to replenish.

The graphics are great, too.  Designed from the ground up to take advantage of the iPhone 4 and its Retina Display, it looks gorgeous.  Taking a page from camp horror fare, it manages to be both cheesy and cartoony while still managing to be very creepy, especially when they start coming in larger numbers.

And when I say it was designed from the ground up for iPhone 4, I mean it.  It is, in fact, exclusive to the iPhone 4 and the 4th generation iPod Touch because it’s control mechanism uses the onboard gyroscope to pan around.  This means that you have to rotate yourself (or the phone) to turn and face the aliens, just like at the arcade with Beachhead.

The problem, though, is that, if you’re gaming on your iPhone, odds are you’re not in an arcade.  If, like me, you do most of your iPhone gaming on the bus or train, it’s not really possible to start spinning around to aim.  Although I guess if you’re on your break at work and you have a swivelling office chair you could do that, but otherwise the mechanic, while clever and fun, isn’t exactly stellar in most places where I game.

So I guess it comes down to where you game.  If you game at home, even a little, and you like shooting games you will love Aliens Need Brains.  If you don’t do much gaming at home, though, you’d best be in a fairly open space and not be easily embarrassed before you turn this one on.

Virion SD ($0.99)

A couple years back a kid with cancer teamed up with a game studio to make a small indie game about fighting cancer – literally.  I never got a chance to play it, but the footage I saw made it look like a cross between Space Harrier and the movie Fantastic Voyage.

Apparently, part of the idea sprang from research that shows people who are preoccupied don’t notice pain as much and that, given recent discoveries regarding the power of the mind over the body, your mind witnessing you battling cancer and winning could give your body the edge in beating off cancer.

Virion SD  (originally released for the iPad as Virion) follows a similar theme – fighting disease in the body – with a different mechanic – puzzle based matching.  And the results are a resounding success.  Instead of blasting cancer nucleopeptides to pieces, you are trying to stop virii in the brain by covering the end of viral receptors with antibodies floating around the brain.

The mechanic is simple enough, but actually doing it can be tricky.  That’s because botht he receptors and the antibodies are both rotating.  As such, it’s all about timing.  You have to get the antibodies into a perfect orbit around the receptor.  To complicate things, as the game advances there are more receptors to match and you will need to match multiple receptors at once. To top it all off, you’ve got a timer, and if you don’t clear all the receptors before time’s up it’s game over.

The game is smooth, simple and addictive.  I started playing the game a couple of hours before work, and the next thing I knew I was running late, which is something I can’t say about very many iOS games.  That’s because once you’ve cleared one section of the brain, you then move to another section and do it all over again.  Different sections are collered differently to indicate difficulty, and how well you do really does matter.  To unlock the next patient, you need to get 20 points over 9 sections.  Points are acquired based on how well you do, with a bronze star giving 1 point, a silver star giving 2 points, and a gold star giving 4 points.  There are 14 people to save, and with each having 9 sections of brain, there are over 120 levels to the game.

Another nice feature is having 3 save files with customizable photo tags, allowing 3 people to play without affecting another’s game, which any parent who has an iPhone is all too familiar with.

Truth be told, I’m looking for a flaw and I can’t find one.  I mean, sure, the graphics are simple, but they should be simple, and the level of polish on the game (graphics and all) is something you seldom see outside of the larger app studios.  So if after all this you’re still on the fence, give the free version a try.  I think you’ll agree it’s good.

Toy Physics HD ($3.99)

Review – “Fast-paced physics game brought to the iPad platform!”

One genre of games that definitely benefits from the iPad’s larger screen are puzzle games. Especially games like Toy Physics! The extra screen space allows there to be a lot more going on at the same time. The basic idea of Toy Physics is that you have to get the toys to fall into the boxes. You do this by touching and dragging on the screen to create little platforms that can hold up and direct the toys where they need to go!

When you open up Toy Physics you’re greeted by some music and a menu with 3 buttons on it. The first thing I did was check out the “Instructions” which show you basically how the game works and what to do. I would recommend just jumping into the game though because it’s pretty easy to get figured out!

Once you select “Play” you’ll be taken to a screen where you can specify what difficulty level you want to play on. There are three difficulty levels (easy, medium, and hard) to choose from and they make the game harder basically by increasing the amount of toys that you have to get into crates!

In order to win a level you have to get the specified number of toys into boxes, while not letting three of them get past you. As you get further into the game the toys will fall more quickly and you’ll have more obstacles getting in your way!

the graphics of this game, while not absolutely stunning, surely do add to the feel of the game, and the physics engine is also pretty good as well. As you finish levels you’ll get a “score” based on how many objects you let get through your defenses. If you are perfect you get 3 stars, if you miss one you get 3 stars and if you miss two then you get just 1 star.

Overall this is one of the few games I’ve played in a while that really feels unique. The gameplay is fun and very smooth as well. One thing that would be nice though is there was some kind of scoring besides just how many “stars” you get when you beat the level. I was also a little bit surprised that the app is not linked to any social network such as OpenFeint or GameCenter.

Despite having a few relatively small problems this is an app that is definitely a lot of fun. And while $3.99 may seem a little expensive, it’s most certainly not bad at all for an iPad app of this nature. So what are you waiting for? Moto Mania ($0.99)

I used to love playing Excitebike back when I first got my NES.  It was a very simple but fun game, running up ramps and making huge jumps.  Moto Mania reminds me of Excitebike quite a bit; it’s a very simple and fun game, running up ramps and making huge jumps.

Controls are equally simple: to accelerate, touch the right side of the screen.  To reverse, touch the left side of the screen.  To tilt back or forward (including doing back flips or forward flips), tilt your phone to the left or right to flip backwards or forwards, respectively.  This is important, as landing wrong will cause you to fly off your bike and ragdollize.

However, while Excitebike was limited to a couple of motocross tracks, Moto Mania has twenty tracks split between an outdoor environment and a city environment.  In these environments there are various ramps, jumps, pits, and other obstacles to help you fly in the sky and flip your bike.  Or, you know, fly off your bike and ragdollize.

Indeed, one of the joys of the game is watching your biker ragdollize during the many (MANY!) accidents you WILL have, screaming in agony accompanied by the snapping of bones.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much I’m beginning to wonder if the game should have been called “Pocket Sadist”.

A nice addition is the ability to customize your bike by selecting the bike paint and wheels, and it keeps track of your best times around each track, giving the tracks some replay value in trying to beat your own best time.

However, Moto Mania does have a few problems.  The biggest is the sheer shortness of the game.  Each of the twenty tracks can be completed in less than a minute, and even allowing for a certain amount of time spent just running my biker off the track and watching him slam into walls, I was done with the game in less than an hour.

Another small disappointment is that, considering the much trumpeted ragdoll physics, the biker doesn’t ragdollize all that much.  He has only 3 points of articulation, as well as only having one arm and one leg.  I suppose that’s only fair enough for a 2D character, but it’d be much more fun to watch both arms and legs ragdollizing independently.

Just the same, I haven’t had this much fun crashing and burning since playing the original Burnout.  I think that makes it worthwhile.

Roll Em Hoops HD ($1.99)

I have very fond memories of ski-ball; countless hours spentrolling balls up that slope to get as many tickets as possible to win prizes at Chuck E. Cheeze.  As such, Roll Em Hoops gives me something of a nostalgic feeling.  Of course, it’s not classic ski-ball; it’s more a hybrid of ski-ball and the free throw machines.  But here, unlike the free throw machines, I can actually get the balls into the hoops, making it a great way to kill time.

Roll Em Hoops has been available as an iPhone app for some time, and was also recently made into a universal app, but it’s also received an HD upgrade with higher quality graphics for your iPad.  The game options and play are identical in both versions.

In case you haven’t played the universal version, there are three game options: In The Bonus, OldSchool and 3-Point Shootout.  All three games feature flicking your finger up the screen, racing against the clock, to score as many points as possible.

Old School is essentially classic ski-ball with a basketball theme, though it does have one variation; every so often, the hoops will begin moving back and forth, doubling the point value of the hoops.

3-Point Shootout gives you 5 chances to shoot at each of the five hoops in turn.  Each ball is worth 1 point except the final ball of each hoop which is the “Money Ball” and worth 2 points.

In The Bonus is the most fun of the three, in that it has the normal play with 4 additional mini-games.  To start a mini-game, you have to get one ball in each hoop in the normal mode, lighting up the hoops.

The game boasts the use of the Ageia PhysX Engine, and it really makes a difference, as different flick strengths affect the ball.  It also keeps track of your high score and has both an online leaderboard and the ability to post your scores to Facebook, which is an added plus for those who like bragging rights.

It does have two problems I’ve noticed, and one of them is fairly critical; the directional sensor tracking your flicks doesn’t always register correctly, especially when flicking rapidly.  There were several times when I flicked up and to the right, yet the ball rolled left and vice versa.  Until this problem is fixed it’ll continue to be frustrating.

The second is a minor quibble, which is that once a game is finished, if you want to switch play modes you have to go back to the main menu and select a new game.  It’d be nice to be able to select a different play mode from the game over screen, but, as I said, that’s a very minor thing.

In the end, if you already have the universal app (which is only $.99), I don’t know if it’d be worth the extra $1.99 to upgrade to the HD version to me.  I’m sure to some it is, and that’s really a personal judgement.  But if you don’t have the universal app, the extra dollar to spring for the HD version isn’t unreasonable at all.

Review – “Protect planet earth from the invading forces”

Puzzle bricks is another great game if you’re looking for something that you can pick up and play for just a few minutes when you have some time to kill. The game is based on concepts from games like Breakout and Space invaders. the basic idea is that you have a paddle that can shoot bullets and you have to have to keep the ball moving while you use your bullets to destroy the incoming missiles that are fired at you randomly!

When you open up Puzzle Bricks you’re taken to the main menu screen. There are three buttons on this screen: “Play,” “Help,” and “High Scores.” The very first time you open the game though you’ll be asked to log into or create an OpenFeint profile. This is to track and compare your high scores with people all over the world, and also to offer a system for you to gain “achievements” for accomplishing various things in the game.

The first thing I did is touch the “Help” button to figure out how the game is played. This screen is very simple, and offers more information about the game as you scroll down. It shows that you control the paddle by touching below it and dragging from side to side, and that you have a blaster that is used for destroying missiles and changing the direction the ball.

Once you’ve got how to play figured out it’s time to head back to the main menu and hit “Play” to be taken to the main gameplay screen. When you’re ready to get started just touch the “Play” button in the center of the screen and the ball will start moving.

One of the first things I noticed while playing the game is how the control for firing the gun works. Don’t get me wrong, it does make sense. To fire your gun you just touch the paddle. The problem is that if you’re going to use it to try and maneuver the ball around things it’s a pain. Because you just touch the paddle, there is really to way to move the paddle and fire at the same time, which you really need to be able to do sometimes.

As you’re playing through the game you’ll see various items fall from the destroyed “Alien Pods” as the game calls them. Most of them just give you points, but you’ll want to keep an eye on all of the heart ones because those will not only give you points, but also extra lives!

Overall the game runs pretty smoothly, but it does have a few issues. Obviously there’s the control issue I mentioned but the game also needs the ability to continue where you left off, (iOS 4 compatibility) and the explosions in the game make it a little bit difficult to see what’s going on sometimes.

With that said, the game itself is pretty fun, and I really think that as the author continues to churn out updates that it’s going to get a lot better! Review – “Kitty needs cheezburgers, om nom nom!”

I’ll have to admit that when I saw the pictures of this app I was a bit skeptical. The graphics just looked a little bit too “clip-arty” for my taste. Once I actually got into it and started playing the game though the graphics really added to the feel of it quite nicely. The basic concept of this game is that you have to get the kitty to swing from rope to rope, avoiding obstacles to get the cheeseburgers at the end.

When you open up the game you’ll be taken to a title screen with a large “Play!” button on the right side. Once you touch the button you’ll be taken right into the game. When you start you’ll see some text up telling you that the object of the game is to help the kitty get the “cheezburgers!”

Gameplay is very simple. To get your kitty swinging you just tilt your device from side to side. When you’re ready to release from the rope you just touch the screen and if you want to slide down to the bottom of the rope you just shake your device.

The first few levels are pretty basic, and will allow you to get used to gameplay pretty easily. As you get further into the game there some of the ropes will be higher/lower, further apart, longer/shorter, and you’ll even find obstacles like ships and trampolines to help you make it to the cheezburgers at the end!

At any time you can pause the game by touching the “Menu” button in the upper right corner of the screen. This will bring up a menu with the options to turn sound effects on/off, turn hints on/off, restart your game, or learn how to play. To continue gameplay just touch the “Keep Playing” button at the bottom of the screen.

I found this game to be quite a bit of fun, but I do have 2 gripes. The first is that the game is very short. I was able to finish the entire game in about 20-30 minutes. It does, however, keep track of how long it takes you to finish, as well as how many times you fail a level on your way though.

My second gripe is that if the game is going to be short and timed like this, it really needs some kind of high score list. It would be preferable if this list was a global one through some type of interface like OpenFeint/GameCenter, but even a local high score list would at least add a little replay value to the game.

With all of that said, the game is only $0.99, and is a great game to be able to pick up for a few minutes and then put right back down. Especially since it uses the iOS 4.0′s ability to start the app back up right where you left off if you leave it! Touch Chaos (0.99)

Review – “Find out just how fast your fingers can be!”

If you’re looking for a good way to get used to touching exactly where you want to on your iPhone you may want to check out Touch Chaos. The basic idea is that you see randomly colored balls flying around the screen, and you have have to touch certain colors as quickly as possible. It may sound simple, but as you get further in, and the balls get more active it gets pretty crazy!

The main menu when you open up Touch Chaos is really simple. There are three buttons: Play, Scores, and Tutorial. The tutorial is just a text-based explanation of how to play the game. To be honest though most people wouldn’t even need it because the game itself is extremely simple.

Once you’re ready to get started just touch the “Play” button. You’ll be taken to a blank screen with 3 or 4 balls on it to start with. Around the edge of this screen there will be a border that is the color of one or more of the balls on the screen. Your objective is to touch all of the balls that are the same color as the border. Be careful though because the border does change quite frequently!

For every ball that you touch correctly you get points. If you touch a ball that is the wrong color it will turn black and start counting down from 5. If you do not touch that ball within 5 seconds then it will explode and you lose. You will also randomly see black balls like this fly in from the edge of the scree and you’ll need to make sure that they don’t explode either!

At the very beginning there are not very many balls and they all move pretty slowly, but that changes very quickly! In the upper left corner of the screen you’ll see a number that represents how many points you’ve accumulated in your current game, and in the upper right corner you’ll see what level you’re currently on.

When you finish a game you’ll see a summary of your performance. It shows you your score, level, how many balls you touched, how many times you missed and your Accuracy! From this screen you can choose to play again or go back to the menu.

One thing that I would really like to see added to this game is some kind of global high-scores feature. While it is definitely fun to compete against yourself and to see how high you can score, it’s hard to beat human competition! With that said, the high score feature is pretty simple and it keeps track of your scores quite well!

Overall this game is just a lot of fun, and best of all it’s the kind of game that you can really pick up and play for just a few minutes! Whether you’re looking for a quick game to pass some time, or you just want to work on your touch accuracy, I’d encourage you to give Touch Chaos a look. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Review – “Familiar shapes in a new type of puzzle game!”

Tetrapped is a puzzle game that is designed to really make you think. There are no timers or score, it’s just how many moves will it take you to solve the puzzle! The basic idea is that you are given various shaped pieces inside a box and you have to move them around each other to get a certain piece in a certain place. While it may sound simple, it can be extremely confusing!

The man menu screen is simple, and yet creative. The main menu is made up of 4 blocks of various shapes that make up your menu options. To get started just touch the “Play” button at the top and you’ll be taken to a tutorial the first time that you do so. Once you finish the tutorial you’ll be taken to the first level. The game defaults to a 6×6 board the first time that you play but there are two other sizes: 7×7 and 8×8 that make it more difficult!

Every time you start a new level you’ll see the “target” block start out where it goes and then move somewhere else. Once that block is in place it is surrounded by some other blocks of random shapes. At the top of the screen you’ll see a box that shows how many moves you’ve made and your best score on that level if you’ve already completed it.

To play the game all you have to do is grab the block you want to move and drag it where you want it. You can only move blocks in one direction in 1 “move,” but they can be moved in any direction. The levels are all designed to make you think, and some of them are actually very easy if you think a little outside of the box.

There are three buttons at the bottom of the screen that will take you back to the home screen, allow you to select a new level, or restart the current level you’re working on. Whether you bring up the level select from in-game or through the option at the main menu, you’ll be given a list of the different board sizes to choose from first, and then you’ll be taken to the list of levels for the on you choose.

There are a few basic options that you can set under the “settings” button from the main menu of this game. They include the ability to turn certain sound effects on/off, change the color scheme and reset your stats. There is also an option to turn “Auto Advance” on/off. This will send you straight to the next level when you finish when it’s on, or just stay at the finished screen till you do something if it’s off.

The basic concept of the game feels somehow familiar, but at the same time new. One thing that seems to be missing is a “competition” factor. It would be cool to be able to see the minimum number of moves that are required to solve a particular puzzle. This would give you a number to shoot for and would make the amount of moves that you solve a puzzle in mean a little more.

While I have played a couple of other games that use a concept similar to this game, the “Tetris” shapes really add a new twist that I had not seen before. There is plenty of challenge in this game and it has hundreds of levels that will test your patience for hours on end! The game is currently available for $0.99 and I would definitely recommend it if you need something to pass some time, or if you just enjoy games that make you think.

Rush! Fire Attack! ($1.99) – only $0.99 this week!!

Review – “Cause mayhem with this accelerometer based arcade game!”

If you enjoy fast-paced games, and smashing things, Rush! Fire Attack! may have just what you’re looking for! This is an extremely simple game that is based around a boulder falling down a hill and crushing everything in it’s path. Best of all it’s only $0.99 for just this week!

The first thing you’ll see when you open this app is OpenFeint’s login/setup screen. If you already have an account with OpenFeint associated with your device all you have to do is choose whether or not to use it. There are a variety of different achievements, as well as a global high score list that you can be a part of if you do use OpenFeint so it really does add a lot to the game itself.

Once you’ve got OpenFeint set up there are three menu options in the upper right corner of the screen. You can start a game, find out about more games by GoJoy, or access your OpenFeint information from within the app. There is no background music in the menu, but there are some sound effects that I honestly found to be a little annoying. Because of the fact that you don’t really spend any time customizing anything at the menu screen though this really isn’t that big of a deal.

When you press the “Play” button the game starts right up and you’ll be controlling a boulder as it rolls downward! The controls are very simple, just tilt your device in the direction that you want the boulder to move. As you fall down the hill you should try and run over as many things as you can. There are all kinds of objects to run over from pigs and gorillas to people.

While you are supposed to run over almost everything, as you fall you will notice some things that have a flashing exclamation point on them that you must avoid. At first one hit from one of these obstacles will pretty much destroy you, but as you play you’ll be able to earn your way to various upgrades that will make your bolder bigger, faster, and stronger!

There are a couple of buttons at the bottom of the screen during gameplay. In the bottom left corner you’ll find a button that will mute all of the sound effects and music. In the bottom right corner you’ll find a pause button.

To sum all of this up, it’s important to recognize this game for what it is. If you’re looking for a really deep game with a lot of variance in gameplay then you’ll probably get bored with this game fast. If; however, you just want a game that you can pick up and start playing any time without reading the directions, this may be just what you’re looking for. So what are you waiting for? Zombie Cover HD ($3.99)

Review – “Pass the time with this addictive strategy game!”

If your the type of person that enjoys a good puzzle, then you might want to take a look at Zombie Cover HD. The basic idea of this app is that you have to protect the Zombies by dropping the objects you’re given to keep them safe! While this may sound easy, it gets complicated quickly!

When you open up the app for the first time you’ll need to link your OpenFeint account to it to keep track of the achievements you complete and to compare your scores with your friends and the world! Once you’ve got that setup you’ll be taken to the main menu.

To get started just select the “New Game” button at the top of the screen and you’ll be taken to a quick tutorial to teach you how to play the game. Once you’re finished with the tutorial you’ll be taken to the first level which looks just like the pictures you see during the tutorial.

Because of the way the physics of this game work and the nature of it there are multiple solutions for most puzzles. The idea is to make you think before you just start doing things! The tools you get to complete the puzzles also vary. You’ll see everything from tires and gears down to broken tv’s and barrels!

While initially the concept of this game was a little bit weird to me, I must say that it has really grown on me! I literally went from “man this is boring” all the way to “I have to finish this level I’m on” after about 10-15 minutes of playing this game! The puzzle element of this game combined with the timing aspect will keep you busy for hours on end!

Another thing this app does really well is keep things simple! Instead of all kinds of screens for options there is just the main menu with a button in the lower left corner of the screen to mute everything if you get tired of the sound!

My only real reservation about this game is that it might be a little bit overpriced at $3.99 by App Store pricing standards. With that said, this game offers some very unique gameplay elements, and if you love strategy games then you will really appreciate this game for all of the depth that it has to offer!

Arkinvade ($0.99)

Review – “Creative twist on Brick-breakers”

When I got my first iPhone, one of the first games that I looked for was a “block-breaker” game. Since that time I have seen a lot of these games. While most of them are fun, after a while they all feel kind of the same. While at first I wasn’t sure if I liked it, Arkinvade definitely has a different feel to it. From the way the ball reflects off the paddle down to the large variety of power-ups and creatures attacking, the game manages to stay interesting.

The first time you start up Arkinvade you’ll want to link it to your OpenFeint profile if you have one. This will allow you to compare your scores with friends and people all around the world. There are also several achievements that you can work to get and show off as well.

The main menu was a little bit confusing at first, there is a play button in the center of the screen with the OpenFeint logo just below it. At the top of the screen is where it gets a little confusing. There are 6 little buttons that were a little bit hard to see at first. There’s not much description on them, but touching them will bring up various menu options that cover everything from the control scheme, to the sound effects and and options to restore a game that you have previously quit out of.

Once you’re ready to get started just touch the play button and you’ll be taken to the main game screen. The default control scheme is to use the accelerometer to move your paddle, and all 3 controls schemes have little buttons in the lower right and left corners to make the ball start moving. The other two control schemes either give you 2 directional buttons or allow you to control your paddle by touching and dragging it.

The object of the game is, as expected, to destroy all of the blocks on the screen. As you play the game you’ll find that some blocks are destroyed in one hit, while others may take several. Throughout the game you’ll also find large green blocks that release bad guys when they are destroyed. The bad guys fire bullets that freeze your paddle for a short time and come after you just like the bad guys in Space Invaders.

One thing that I noticed as I was playing this game is that the physics seemed a little different than you would expect in most of these games. If the ball is already moving from left to right pretty fast and you bump it with the left side of your paddle, the momentum that the ball has effects it a lot more than in most games that I’ve played. This makes the game interesting and adds a little more challenge to it as well.

The best thing about this game though is the variety that has been added to the gameplay. There are tons of different power-ups that do all kinds of things from making your paddle bigger, giving you more than one ball to destroy blocks with, set your ball on fire and make it literally cut right through all of the blocks, and even give your paddle firepower temporarily. Beware though because not all of the icons you see will help you. There are a few that will make things more difficult and/or even kill your current life.

Overall, I think that this game has the potential to be a real top-seller if just a few small issues are addressed in future updates. The first is that the game really needs a screen that shows you all of the icons that you can collect and tells you what they do. It’s a little bit frustrating to grab an icon that you’ve never seen before and have it kill you.

The second thing is that the game needs better support for continuing your game. It took me a while to even figure out that it was possible. This could be easily remedied by either asking the user if they want to continue their previously exited game, or by adding quick-launch multitasking that brings up the app where you left off. Although just changing the menu a little bit and making it more obvious what options you do have would work just fine as well.

With that said, the game is a lot of fun once you get everything figured out, and it is currently available in the iTunes App Store for just $0.99. If you’re a fan of brick-breaking games, this is one of the most engaging games I’ve played of that type. Do you like those design apps where you can make cool shapes on your iPhone or iPod Touch? If so you may enjoy Spiromatic.

The concept of the app is simple .. you’re making a design based on a spinning set of nodes, but it’s actually pretty entertaining and something that all ages can enjoy (my niece loves these types of apps!).

When you first open the app you have the choices of Start, Instructions, and Examples. When you go into Start you’re asked how many nodes you want, which are dots that you can use to change the shape of your drawing wand. You can also control the color of the design in this window prior to hitting Create.

Let’s look at a design that I made. I started out with a shade of blue and 4 nodes to move at my will. The starting screen looks like this ..

From here you can take those individual dots and move them wherever you’d like. This is what I chose to do with mine:

Now I’m reading to hit the Play button and see what happens!

Here is the design in progress. You can look to see how the lines are drawing in patterns I could not have predicted!

And here is the final product. You can stop the drawing anytime you’re ready by hitting the Done button. Not bad for a rookie

At this point you can actually share the image on email or just hit the back button and create a new one.

Aside from the instructions the other option on this app is the Examples button. which not only shows you the final product but actually allows you to see the shape of the drawing wand and the entire drawing process.

In a nutshell this app is pretty interesting and will be entertaining for various age groups. If you like these types of apps then you can’t go wrong with this one. It’s in the App Store for $0.99 so follow the link below and pick up your copy today!

AppZapp has been around for quite a while and has brought us apps like “Do Not Press The Red Button”, and many more. They have somewhere around 20 apps in their catalog for iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, and they have released a new app to try and sort through it all: Discover the App Store.

AppZapp has released a new app to easily guide you through the AppStore. “Discover the App Store“ is an easy walk through all the apps has to offer, with a simple easy interface. AppZapp also has a “PriceAlarm“ function, that will always inform you of sales or promotions of certain apps you love. You just set up a free account, and select the Apps you want to monitor.

“Discover the App Store” is a great tool to help you find what your looking for in the App Store. It features the same great descriptions and details you’ve come to know from the App Store. It supports App Stores in the US, UK, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

In the vast sea of apps in the App Store, it is often the most simple apps that are the most fun and get the most use. I’m always on the look out for something simple to play with, that doesn’t take too much thought, but is fun to goof around with, while watching TV or something.

Developer Croesus-Mode has released an app called KaleidoBalls. You can create color balls by touching the screen and  dragging your finger across screen to create more color balls and animations. Ball color is based on screen position and varies as screen is touched multiple times. The balls are animated in the order they are created, and keep repeating, to get a kaleidoscope effect.

You shake the device to clear the screen and start over. Tap to add dots, swipe to make swirls, or whatever you want. Check out our video to see it in action.

ClayJump ($0.99)

Review – “Bounce your way to new heights!”

One of the more popular game types since the advent of the iPhone App Store has been platform jumping games, and ClayJump falls into the category. The basic idea of these games is that you have to tilt your device to help your character jump off the platforms and get as high as possible. However, unlike a traditional platform game your character just continually jumps every time you touch a platform!

The graphics for ClayJump use a artsy “claymation” look which give the game a very cartoonish type of feel. The menu’s, gameplay, backgrounds and interface are done very well. They really add to the feel of the game.

This app can be linked to your OpenFeint account to compare scores with your friends and those all around the world. You’ll also be able to earn and track “achievements” through OpenFeint as well! Once you log into your account the first time you’ll be logged in automatically every time you open up the app afterwards.

The main menu has a few simple buttons and a link to OpenFeint in the lower left corner of the screen. In the “Options” menu you can set the volume of the music and sound effects individually, as well set the “sensitivity” of the motion-sensor.

Once you get into the game you control your character by tilting your device in the direction that you want him to move. Along the way you’ll see “Ice Lollies” to pick up. The more Ice Lollies you pick up, the more often you get a boost and the higher that boost will take you!

While the concept of this game is extremely simple, it is very well done! The controls are simple, and the beginning of the game is extremely easy. As you progress through the game you’ll find different kinds of platforms and obstacles that will try to keep you from going any higher!

To sum up this review I’d say that if you’re looking for a game that’s easy to pick up and play just for a few minutes, you may want to check this one out! Especially if you’re competitive you’ll enjoy the global high score feature that is included with your OpenFeint account! ClayJump is currently available in the iTunes App Store for just $0.99, so what are you waiting for? Check it out for yourself today!
