Review – “A great distraction for all ages!”

One of my favorite types of games are those that I can start up quickly and play for a few minutes just for a little distractions, and I’ve found that Tap-a-Sack is an excellent fit in this category! Not only is it extremely easy to play, but there are no menu’s or options to sift through. You just open the app and start tapping!

The basic idea of Tap-a-Sack is that you have to keep tapping the sacks on the screen to keep them in the air. It’s kind of like Hackey Sack on your iDevice, except in this game you’ll be using your fingers instead of your feet! When you get started you’ll have just one sack, but things get hectic quickly if you don’t lose it as more sacks are added to the mix!

The main gameplay screen is simple. At the bottom you’ll find three numbers thatrepresent the highest score you’ve achieved since you opened the app, what your current score is, and the score of your last game.

While Tap-a-Sack may seem a little too simplistic on the surface, it’s really a breath of fresh air for someone that is just looking for a simple distraction. It has a couple of nice touches as well. You’ll see fireworks in the background as you make it further into the game, and you can send your high scores directly to Facebook!

To sum it all up, if what you’re looking for is a complex game that will make you think you should look elsewhere. If; however, you’re looking for a game that you can just pick up for a few minutes, or that can be played by people of all ages, you may want to check out Tap-a-Sack. Do you like those design apps where you can make cool shapes on your iPhone or iPod Touch? If so you may enjoy Spiromatic.

The concept of the app is simple .. you’re making a design based on a spinning set of nodes, but it’s actually pretty entertaining and something that all ages can enjoy (my niece loves these types of apps!).

When you first open the app you have the choices of Start, Instructions, and Examples. When you go into Start you’re asked how many nodes you want, which are dots that you can use to change the shape of your drawing wand. You can also control the color of the design in this window prior to hitting Create.

Let’s look at a design that I made. I started out with a shade of blue and 4 nodes to move at my will. The starting screen looks like this ..

From here you can take those individual dots and move them wherever you’d like. This is what I chose to do with mine:

Now I’m reading to hit the Play button and see what happens!

Here is the design in progress. You can look to see how the lines are drawing in patterns I could not have predicted!

And here is the final product. You can stop the drawing anytime you’re ready by hitting the Done button. Not bad for a rookie

At this point you can actually share the image on email or just hit the back button and create a new one.

Aside from the instructions the other option on this app is the Examples button. which not only shows you the final product but actually allows you to see the shape of the drawing wand and the entire drawing process.

In a nutshell this app is pretty interesting and will be entertaining for various age groups. If you like these types of apps then you can’t go wrong with this one. It’s in the App Store for $0.99 so follow the link below and pick up your copy today!

Bubble Magic ($0.99)

Review – “Great entertainment app for children!”

This is an app that parents everywhere can appreciate! The basic idea is that you create colorful bubbles and pop them by touching and dragging your finger across the screen. It offers all kinds of colorful backgrounds, as well as the ability to add custom backgrounds!

When you open the app up you’ll see two buttons at the bottom of the screen. The button on the left will switch between the available backgrounds that come with the app, and the one on the right will allow you to pick any photo from your device’s library.

When you’re ready to start making bubbles, all you have to do is touch anywhere on the screen besides those buttons. the text and buttons disappear, and bubbles will appear wherever your finger is as you drag around the screen. You can create larger bubbles by touching and holding in the same area, or you can make lots of small bubbles by quickly dragging your finger across the screen.

Once you’ve created bubbles you can either let them fly off the screen or you can pop them. All you have to do to pop bubbles is just touch them. Every time you pop a bubble you’ll hear a satisfying little “pop” sound that will keep you coming back for more.

While this app is very simple, it can be highly entertaining, at least in small doses, for young children. For just $0.99 is hard to really go wrong if it entertains them at all! In the vast sea of apps in the App Store, it is often the most simple apps that are the most fun and get the most use. I’m always on the look out for something simple to play with, that doesn’t take too much thought, but is fun to goof around with, while watching TV or something.

Developer Croesus-Mode has released an app called KaleidoBalls. You can create color balls by touching the screen and  dragging your finger across screen to create more color balls and animations. Ball color is based on screen position and varies as screen is touched multiple times. The balls are animated in the order they are created, and keep repeating, to get a kaleidoscope effect.

You shake the device to clear the screen and start over. Tap to add dots, swipe to make swirls, or whatever you want. Check out our video to see it in action.

Review – “Bounce your way to new heights!”

One of the more popular game types since the advent of the iPhone App Store has been platform jumping games, and ClayJump falls into the category. The basic idea of these games is that you have to tilt your device to help your character jump off the platforms and get as high as possible. However, unlike a traditional platform game your character just continually jumps every time you touch a platform!

The graphics for ClayJump use a artsy “claymation” look which give the game a very cartoonish type of feel. The menu’s, gameplay, backgrounds and interface are done very well. They really add to the feel of the game.

This app can be linked to your OpenFeint account to compare scores with your friends and those all around the world. You’ll also be able to earn and track “achievements” through OpenFeint as well! Once you log into your account the first time you’ll be logged in automatically every time you open up the app afterwards.

The main menu has a few simple buttons and a link to OpenFeint in the lower left corner of the screen. In the “Options” menu you can set the volume of the music and sound effects individually, as well set the “sensitivity” of the motion-sensor.

Once you get into the game you control your character by tilting your device in the direction that you want him to move. Along the way you’ll see “Ice Lollies” to pick up. The more Ice Lollies you pick up, the more often you get a boost and the higher that boost will take you!

While the concept of this game is extremely simple, it is very well done! The controls are simple, and the beginning of the game is extremely easy. As you progress through the game you’ll find different kinds of platforms and obstacles that will try to keep you from going any higher!

To sum up this review I’d say that if you’re looking for a game that’s easy to pick up and play just for a few minutes, you may want to check this one out! Especially if you’re competitive you’ll enjoy the global high score feature that is included with your OpenFeint account! Since getting my first iPhone, 3 years ago, I’ve always let my daughter play with it. At 3 years old, it seemed like she already knew how to use the multitouch display, because that’s how kids learn just about everything: they gotta touch it. Tap N Learn has another app in their series of educational applications for kids and toddlers. This is called Learn to Spell.

Learn to Spell is great tool to help your child with their spelling, no matter where you are. Kids can tap and slide the letters into place to spell 3 to 5 letters words, from 4 different categories: Animals, Household, Food, and Plants. There is a total of 43 words for them to learn.

The words are accompanied by high quality images, so your child can see what they are trying to spell. The words are also spoken out loud, by a friendly, clear voice, getting your child engaged and listening.

There are 3 modes of learning, and are best explained in the words of the developer:

1. Learn Mode – Where the application will spell out the word and end with the pronunciation of the word. The child can tap on the image to repeat or tap on the next arrow to proceed to the next word.
2. Practice Mode – Where the application will display the image of the word and the alphabets of the word will be randomly displayed at the bottom. The correct spelling will also be faintly displayed at the top. The child will need to drag the alphabets to the correct box at the top of the screen to form the word.
3. Quiz Mode – Is the same as Practice Mode except that the correct spelling will not be displayed. Only when the child has spelt the word will the application show the correct spelling. If the child has spelt correctly, 1 point will be awarded.

This app is recommended for children 2 and up, but even my 6 year old had some fun with this. She is just going into grade 2, so her spelling is getting pretty good already, but she had a good time with Learn to Spell. I wish I had this app when she was younger, as it could have kept her occupied for hours.

Overall, I think this is an excellent educational tool for children just learning how to read and spell. I would definitely recommend this to any parent. Tap N Learn – Learn to spell in available in the App Store now for $.99. If you want to give a try first, there is a lite version, as well.

We have seen many “tap” style music games come to the iPhone, since the App Store opened in 2008. Music games are a natural progression for the iPhone and iPod Touch, and the tap style games a great. Pointers looks to bring something different to the genre, with SwingSwing Motion, using the accelerometer to play the game.

Similar to other music games in the App Store, the premis is to get through all the songs on each level of difficulty, to progress through the game. It starts you off pretty easy, but gets quite challenging, the further you get. Each song has three levels of difficulty, Easy, Medium, and Hard. There is also an Extreme mode to unlock, for a few of the songs.

There are 17 songs in total. There is no licensed material, but the songs included are well known classics. The list as as follows:

Enchanted Forest ($4.99)

Review – “”

One of the first types of games to hit the App Store during its beginnings was the “brick-breaker” game type. Since then there have been a variety of different approaches and variants of these games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Enchanted Forest takes a few concepts from these games, adds in a basic storyline progression, and is written exclusively for the larger screen of the iPad!

Now this is your fair warning, if you are not a fan of cheesy “fairy” art in games then you may want to give this game a pass. If; however, you can get past the fact that the game’s art looks like it came out of a book of fairy tales though the game itself is pretty good.

The main menu offers several different options. Among these options is a “Community” button. Before you get started you’ll definitely want to go here and log in to your OpenFeint account if you have one already. If not you can quickly and easily sign up as well if you like. A side note here; it would have been nice if the game just asked you to log in to OpenFeint the first time that you open the app.

Once you are ready to start your game just touch the “Play” button in the upper left corner of the menu. You’ll need to create a profile to get started by typing in your name and then it gets right to the game. You’ll see an overview of the game map with your current location pinpointed on the map.

Once you touch the screen from the map you’ll be taken to the game screen. There are two different control schemes to use, and the default one is to use the accelerometer to move your paddle. I personally found this method to be a bit jerky though and changed it to where you touch the screen to control the paddle.

To get started you just touch the screen above your paddle and ball will start moving. as you bounce the ball off the various blocks some of them will drop items that you can pick up. Some of them give you extra points, while others will either help you or make it more difficult as you continue. There are also coins that you can collect by making the ball run over them.

At the end of each level you are taken to a screen where you can use the coins you’ve collected to buy up to 3 different potions that will give you some of the various abilities you can get at the beginning of the next level. As you complete level you’ll continue to see your progress on the map in-between levels. When you reach a new “chapter” there is a totally new look for all of the levels.

My initial impressions were that the “story” aspect is a little bit cheesy, but the game itself plays well and offers enough variety to keep it interesting for most people. As with a lot of apps for the iPad it seems a little pricey to me when compared to the variety of apps available on the iPhone, but I did find it to be pretty fun. Spiderly HD ($0.99)

Review – “Stop the invading spiders!”

If you’re looking for a game that is simple to learn but almost impossible to master you might want to check out Spiderly HD. The basic game concept is keeping the falling spiders from invading the house at the bottom of the screen. You do this by scaring them away and eating them!

The basic concept sounds simple, but it quickly gets more complex. On the first level there are only one color of spiders so you only need one bird. As you progress through the game there will be up to 4 different colors of spiders falling from the skyand you will have to eat them with a bird that matches their color!

As you get even further into the game you’ll start to notice clouds that block your vision, and storm clouds that can actually change the color of the spiders that are falling! This can be especially frustrating if you have several spiders that are almost to the bottom of the screen and they change color!

The final twist that is thrown at you is a bomb that will roll across the bottom of the screen. The bomb is a random color and when you touch it all of the spiders of that color will be destroyed at the same time! While it may be tempting to touch it as soon as it enters the screen, oftentimes waiting just a few seconds will yield much better results.

While the gameplay itself is very fun and hectic, the competitive drive within me started wishing that there was some type of score tracking, or at least a more competitive nature to the game. You are allowed to let two spiders across without failing a level, but this does not regenerate when you win a round. It does reset when you lose though, and there are really no consequences to losing because you can retry as many times as you want.

In summary, if you just looking for a challenge and little distraction then you might want to check out Spiderly HD. If, however, you are very competitive and like to compete for high scores this game may not interest you as much as most. With that said there is a Lite version of this app if you’d like to try it out before you buy it, so what are you waiting for? Head to the App Store and check it out for yourself today.

Virtual Air Hockey ($0.99)

Review – “Air Hockey done right on iOS”

I remember way back when the App Store opened that one of the games to quickly emerge (in several different variants) was Air Hockey. Over the last couple of years I’ve played several different Air Hockey games, some good and some bad. The one thing that seems to be universal is that they are difficult to make playable on the small screen of the iPhone. This is one of the first games that I’ve seen that fixes that problem with a 3D table, and it is a lot of fun!

When you open up Virtual Air Hockey one of the first things you’ll want to do is link it to your OpenFeint account if you have one already. If you don’t, it’s easy to set one up. OpenFeint is a great way track achievements/see who else is online and playing the same games as you are!

The main menu screen a few simple buttons with a demo of the game playing in the background. It’s a very nice effect, and is pulled off quite well. There are three buttons in the main menu: “Play,” “Options,” and “OpenFeint.”

The options menu is fairly basic. You can select the amount of goals that your game will be to (3, 5, or 7), how difficult your computer opponent is, the game volume, and one other attribute called “Paddle Offset.” The Paddle offset makes it easier to see what’s going on while you play by placing the paddle just above where you are holding your finger. You can set the offset anywhere from 0 to 20.

Once you actually get into the game itself the controls are very simple. Wherever you touch on the screen your paddle will be there. Just like Air Hockey in real life the object is to hit the puck into your opponents goal and to protect your own goal. For the most part the controls are fairly smooth, although it is a little jerky occasionally if you move around too quickly.

While the graphics are amazing and the controls are very simple, I do have a couple of small gripes about this app. The first thing that’s missing is the ability to pick up your paddle and place it on top of the puck to grab it and move it around. The other thing is that the puck sometimes seems to fly off of your paddle even when you don’t hit it very far. It doesn’t happen all of the time though, and I was able to adjust to it pretty quickly.

One other thing that I’ve seen in some other games that is missing from this one is the ability to play multiplayer. With the 3D perspective it would be hard to do multiplayer on the same device, but it would have been nice to see either a wifi or bluetooth multiplayer mode. With that said, a lot of multiplayer modes that I’ve seen in games like this lag too much to really be fun anyway.

Another really great thing about this game in particular is that it looks great on both the iPhone and iPad. By purchasing just this one universal app you can play it full screen on any of your iOS devices including the iPad! Not only that but the app is also $0.99!

If you’re looking for a game that’s easy to pick up for just a few minutes and play, this one is both fast-paced and fun. It is especially enjyoable for people that like completing achievements because there are a ton of them! But don’t just take my word for it, check it out for yourself in the App Store today!

Animals’ World HD ($3.99)

Review – “Explore the animal kingdom in HD!”

Most of us grew up with picture books of animals. As children these books help us learn about all kinds of different animals. Animals’ World is basically a picture book on your iPad, but the great thing is that it costs a fraction of what a physical book does, and it also offers a lot of other great features that you won’t find in any animal book!

When you download this app and open it you’ll see a screen with a bunch of animals on it. You can scroll through all the various animals that are available by dragging your finger across the screen. When you find an animal that you’d like to take an in depth look at just touch it and the app will zoom in on it.

When you have an animal selected there are four buttons you can press, one in each corner of the screen. In the upper right corner of the screen is a “zoom” button. Touching this will zoom in so that you can see all of the detail of the beautiful high-res images. Most of these images are large enough that you have to drag around the screen to see the entire thing.

In the lower left corner of the screen is a button with a ruler on it. Touching this button will show a silhouette of an average sized man next to the animal. This gives you an idea of the relative size of the animal.

In the lower right corner is a button with a globe on it. This button will show you a map of the globe with all of the areas where that particular animal lives highlighted. You can rotate and view other ares of the globe by touching it and dragging around. At any time if you want to go back to a previous screen, the upper left corner of the screen is a back arrow that will take you back.

The strength of this app definitely lies in the both the quality of it’s images and in the large amount of animals that is included. A couple of things I noticed on the other hand are that the globe is a little bit confusing to rotate, and it would have been nice if the app pronounced the names of the animals for small children that can’t read.

All things considered though, I could definitely see this app being a great way to expose your young child to the world of animals! While it would be nice to maybe see a few new features added, the interface is clean and simple, and there really is a lot of content.

As with a lot of “HD” apps for iPad I think it is probably a little overpriced. With that said, it is definitely cheaper than buying a physical book with animal pictures. If this app sounds interesting then what are you waiting for? Click the link below and check it out for yourself today!

Preschool Storybook Piano – iPhone App Review ($0.99)

If you’re looking for a great way to keep your young child entertained, this app may be just what your looking for! Twinkle Twinkle Little Star Preschool Storybook Piano is an app that uses visual aids to help teach your child to play piano!

Preschool Storybook Piano has four different modes of play: Play and Sing along, Learn the Song, Karaoke Mode, and Free Style Mode. In Learn the song mode your child will see the notes being played above a keyboard. As the song plays the keys will light up to show you which ones are supposed to be played. To start the song you just touch the “start” button on the left side above the keyboard.

In each of the four different play modes there are several different “keyboard sounds” to choose from. To switch between them just touch the little keyboard icon to the left of the “Start” button. There are all kinds of instrument sounds from piano, guitar and banjo all the way down to animal sounds!

Another thing you can do with this app is record yourself playing and listen to it again! It works great, but I found it to be slightly confusing the first time I used it. There is really not any description of how this feature works. To record yourself playing you have to touch the “Record” button so that it’s highlighted and then start the song to record.

In play and sing along mode you’ll see a story in the background as you play the song, in Karaoke you’ll see the words to the song, and in Free style mode you will both see the words and also the background from play and sing along mode! When you view the words with the song you have the option of viewing them in English, Spanish, or French as well!

If you have a young child in your life that is showing signs of talent/interest in music this app is a great way to encourage that! While it would have been nice to maybe have a few more songs included, the app is only $0.99 and it functions well. So what are you waiting for? Check it out in the App Store today!

Looking for a fun and educational app for your 1st Grade child, or soon to be 1st grader?  If so then you may be interested in Smarty Shortz 1st Grade. Developed by Smarty Shortz LLC the developers admit to being parents that just wanted to integrate fun and education into their child’s iphone gaming experience.

Let’s take a look …

When you first open the app you’ll notice that there are quite a few educational categories to pick from. This gives your child the chance to change things up and learn something new each time. Clicking on a subject will take you to another page which gives your child different lessons to try.

My first criticism with this app is that I had no idea what to do once I clicked on a lesson. There are no Settings nor a Help option .. so I spent a good chunk of time scratching my head and tapping the screen with no success.

Each category has 4 lessons and then little mini games as a reward for passing the lesson.

Anyway .. Spelling has you either match names to objects, write words, find similar sounding words, and so on. Part of the lessons almost felt more like reading than they did spelling, but regardless there was still an opportunity to learn something in it.

Reading takes you to where you click on a story part, try and read it outloud, then play back the word to see if you said it correctly. One note on this is that the audio quality is really poor in this category .. unfortunately.

Science teaches you about different processes such as the plant cycle, the process of seeds to fruit, and a few more. Again, the audio quality needs improvement here.

Geography shows you a map of the world and displays words along the bottom. The object is to correctly drag the word onto it’s corresponding location .. i.e. North America or Pacific Ocean.

Math has measure things such as length, height, and quantities (see below). Unfortunately when you open a lesson it is not immediately clear what they want you to do.

History shows a timeline on the bottom and items at the top and you have to correctly place the items in the correct order along the timeline.

All in all I think this app has potential to be nice and educational for children, but I think it comes with its share of downsides. The lack of instructions within the app was very frustrating .. it took me five minutes to realize what to do in the History lessons. The graphical and audio quality of the app are much lower than what you find in other apps offered for a cheaper price.

My other major complaint is that each category only has 4 lessons. That’s it. After $1.99 and 35 minutes your child may be done with this app. It needs a lot more substance behind it because it feels more like a Lite version to a paid app than something you would actually purchase.

If you are interested in an educational tool for your young child this app may be worth keeping an eye on. With some application enhancements, more instructions, and more substance this app could be very handy at improving your child’s learning curve.

As one of the most popular Free Apps on the iTunes App Store right now, I thought I’d give Zombie Duck Hunt a try. I was first interested in trying it out because, hey, Zombies. And also, hey, Duck Hunt! Who doesn’t love the classic NES Game where with the Florecent Orange Laser Gun? Well, sadly the Laser Gun is not part of Zombie Duck Hunt, but it’s super fun and just as addictive as the original.

First thing I want to mention is that this App currently has 4000+ 1-star ratings on the iTunes App Store – most of which complain about the aiming system being ‘broken’ or not working. I completely understand people’s frustrations or being confused about this, but if you took just a few minutes to figure it out, it’s quite easy to use and fun.

The Gun sight gets set/centered when you load the level. From there you simply tilt/move your iPhone to aim the sight at your target. You don’t tap to aim, which I think what most people are trying. Most of the people who are rating this App 1-star simply haven’t figured this out – and it’s a shame, because it’s a unique aiming feature and it makes the game much more complex and fun.

So, down to game play. There is a brief tutorial letting you know the different kinds of Zombie Ducks and how to kill them. It goes over how to reload (using your left thumb) and fire (using your right thumb), its not expressly clear on how to aim – and unfortunately once you go through the tutorial I couldn’t find a way to bring it back up. Nevertheless, the actual game play is super-fun and addictive. Luckily when you quit you have the option to save from whatever level you’re at. Surprisingly I find this a rare feature in games on the iPhone, so I’m glad it’s included. Plus, there are fun Bonus Rounds between Levels, to regain your hearts.

To add another dimension to the game, you earn dollars for every Zombie Duck you kill and when you save up enough you can go shopping for Bigger and Better Guns! The standard rifle carries 3 shots, until you need to reload. The better guns carry more bullets, and quicker reloads.

I want to mention that the animation and graphics for the most part are very good, I’ve seen much much worse, so for a Free App this is definitely impressive. In addition to the sound/music. Completely suits the game.

Lastly, the game is on OpenFeint, which always ads another fun feature to all games – and also has built-in twitterabilty – I guess to tell your friends when you’ve unlocked another level, or just to tweet that you’re playing, who knows, I didn’t really test that out.

So as it turns out Thousands of people CAN be wrong. Ignore all the naysayers on the iTunes Store and try it out yourself. Just take two minutes or so to figure out your aiming, and go to town killing those Zombie Ducks!

Review – A great way to help your kids brush up on their educational skills!

Looking for an iPhone / iPod Touch app to help your child work on their educational requirements? If so you may be interested in Schoolhouse.

Schoolhouse, developed by BizzyTime Inc. is a child – specific application that includes Math, Spelling, Time, US Currency and Word pronunciation practice. The basic app comes with a limited usability of each although you can purchase upgrades to add more features to the subjects that you are more interested in.

According to the developer’s information, this app is geared towards children from Kindergarten through the 5th grade.

The free app allows your child to play in the practice mode although you can purchase Custom, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert. Unfortunately Practice mode will only let you guess the right answer .. so if by chance you don’t know the answer you just have to keep guessing until you get it right, or just back out and start over.

Let’s take a look at the different subjects ..

Math

The math section offers up a series of math problems on the screen and your child has to decide what the correct answer is. The free app contains addition only, however you can purchase subtraction, division, multiplication, and negative answers.

Spelling

In the spelling section you are given a word and then you have to spell it correctly. The free app is limited to practice mode only as well. My frustration with this section is that it’s apparently case sensitive so if you don’t have it cased exactly as the app does it won’t except your answer. You get a sound and vibration instead, and if you are not paying attention you have no idea why it’s doing that.

Time

This section shows a clock at the top and based on the time showing on it you have to determine the numerical equivalent. The free app is limited to only even hour increments although I hope that it gets more complicated with the in app purchases.

Money

This section shows money on the screen and your child needs to decide what it’s seeing. Since I’m only playing with the free version of this app I cannot comment on how complicated this section gets. On the free version it shows one coin on the screen and you decide whether it’s a nickel, penny, quarter, or dime. Needless to say after a few tries the coin starts repeating.

Word Pronunciation

In this section the app shows a word on the screen and your child is to say the word outloud. This gives them a good means to practice both reading and speaking words.

Overall this app appears to have potential to be a very beneficial educational tool, however to do so it will require many in app purchases. While it gives you a good preview of the app, almost all of the functions are locked down without spending money.

Some of the features that can be purchased are:

- different difficulty levels for each subject

- correct answers only

- allowing hints

- time limts

- randomizing

- repeating problems

In addition the app includes the ability to set up a profile for each user, track your progress, your best times, and give your child an opportunity to make or break their goals.

This app seems to be a very good educational tool to get your kids on top of their education. It covers many different subjects, is a very clean and well laid out app, and is progressive so that it can be used for different years and grade levels. I suggest grabbing the basic app and letting your child give it a good test run. You may find that this app is exactly what you were looking for!!

Analogy ($0.99)

Review – “Train your brain with Analogy for iOS!”

This is a great example of an app that is not only fun, but educational as well! Analogy is an app that plays full screen on both the iPhone and iPad platform, and is designed to stretch your child’s brain as they play! You’ll find that this app will teach problem solving, analytical thinking, and creativity, and at the same time entertain!

To get started all you have to do is touch the “Unlock to start game” button in the lower right side of the screen. The first time you open the app you’ll be greeted by some basic rules that explain how to play. You can turn off this introduction in the settings menu at any time, or leave it on for future reference.

The game itself is set up so that you are given an example of two items that are somehow related, and then one more item with 4 options as to which one it is related to. For example, one of the puzzles in the game is “feather: duck :: fur : ?” The options for the answer are “pig,” “bear,” “rat,” and “swan.” The correct answer in this case is bear because that’s what a bear has on its outside, while feathers is what a duck has!

In the upper right corner of the game screen is a timer that shows how long you’ve been playing the current round. Just to the left of that is your current score/how many questions there are in the current round. Each time you get a correct answer you hear a confirmation from the app telling you that you did a good job. These seemed nice at first, but they do get old quickly. They can be easily turned off while playing the game by touching the speaker icon in the upper left corner of the screen.

That’s the basics of how to play the game. Back at the main menu screen you have four buttons along the bottom. the three on the right will take you to more information on other games by the same developer, to the email app to contact the developer about promotion alerts or to tell friends about the app.

On the far left side of the menus a settings button. From here you have a variety of different settings from whether to show the game rules at the beginning, to the difficulty level and numb of questions. At the very bottom of the screen you can also choose whether the game will use “Pattern” questions or “word” questions.

The difficulty levels in this app are definitely well-suited for children. With that said, this app could easily have been made more appealing to all ages if the developers had included a higher difficulty level and some form of a high score list. I actually was a little surprised that there is no form of high score list currently.

All things considered, this app does very well for its intended audience. So while it may be a couple of features short of being an app for all ages, for $0.99 this is a great way to help your child’s mind develop! If you’re still thinking about it, don’t wait any longer. Grab your copy for just $0.99 today!

If you find yourself regularly trying to keep a young child occupied, you may want to take a look at the Dots 4 Tots app! Dots 4 Tots offers four different modes of play and hours of entertainment for toddlers! It does this by providing a screen full of dots and numbers that need to be connected to make a picture!

From the moment you open up this app it is full of all kinds of color! The main menu has four different game modes to choose from that are represented by a picture, a number, a letter, and a shape. Just below these games are two other buttons that allow you to view “add-ons” and the “information” page that tells you about the developer.

The first game mode is the one represented by the picture. In this game your child when the child connects the dots he or she will be rewarded with a random picture that matches up with them. the pictures that come built into this app are of all different kinds of sea-life.

The second game type is a number recognition game. In this game when your child traces the dots a number will appear! When the number appears you’ll see the number spelled out at the top of the screen, and a voice will pronounce the number. This is a great way for your child to correlate visual representations of numbers with their names!

The third game is a letter recognition game. It works in basically the same way as the number game, and is an excellent way to teach your child the alphabet! As in the number game, when the dots are all connected your child will see the letter they were tracing and will hear the name of the letter as well.

The final game type consists of a variety of different shapes. You’ll find that there are a variety of shapes used in this game from simple ones like circle, triangle, and square, down to more complex shape names such as rhombus, star and cube! Just as in the previous games your child will hear the name of the shape once they have traced it.

While I must admit that connecting the dots on a touch screen was a little bit weird at first, the combination of colors, soothing music and learning make this game a winner for your child! Connecting the dots in this app is simple enough for even small children to figure it out, as long as they are old enough to start recognizing their numbers.

One thing that I did notice, that your child may not, is that the selection of pictures is fairly limited. It starts showing the same pictures over and over again fairly quickly. With that said if your child gets good at connecting the dots you can add some more pictures to the app via in-app purchase. At the time of this review there were 3 different packages of images on a variety of themes for just $0.99 each!

All things considered this app is one of the best combinations of entertainment and education I’ve seen for parents of toddlers. If you regularly find yourself looking for a distraction for your small child you can’t afford not to grab this app up for just $0.99! If you’re looking for a simple, cute App that offers a couple of different options for showing a personalized message with an adorable fairy tale character-style snow-globe, this is it.

Sweety Ball – Fairy Tale Edition offers three different snow globes., One of a cute cat holding a present, another depicting the Three Little Pigs, and finally a sleeping baby in the moon. Each of them are very cute, and have within the ball different ‘snow’, music notes, or flower petals. The ‘Snow’ within the globes will react if you shake your iPhone – just as it would in real-life.

There is a bit of customization options available, and the options to turn on or off any of the following options. Music: each globe has the option to play one of two melodies, and they’re suited to that theme. They’re a sort of old-time midi-style music. Of course, if you want no music, simply turn it off. Secondly, you can change the Scrolling message, there are a few built-in, but you can add your own as well.

Finally, if you want – you can add a custom photo background. However it imports all photos as landscape-mode only, so keep that in mind, you might be best advised to choose a pattern or color background photo instead of something or someone, as you can’t really see it anyways.

I wish that there was an option to share your creations with your friends, but you’d just have to show it to them. And although you can’t save your settings, they are the same if you exit and re-enter the App, so you don’t have to start all over again. I wish I could say that this App is only 99 cents, because that is how much I think most people would be willing to pay for it, but it’s $1.99 – so for those of you who really think they want it, go ahead. Otherwise, I don’t think they’ll get a lot of passer-by sales.

Review – “Fast paced game for all ages!”

Whether you’re looking for a way to kill a little time, or you need a quick distraction for a child, Hot Chicks : With Friends is a game that is fun for all ages! The basic concept is that you control a “chick” as it tries to dodge all of the fire falling from the sky. While it may sound simplistic, it is definitely a lot of fun!

One of the things that was evident as I tested this game is the attention the developer gives to detail. From the background music, to the menu system and the graphics, everything about this app adds to the fun “cartoony” feel.

The main menu has several different options. There is a tutorial on how to play, and also on how to set up the “multiplayer” feature and play it as well. When you open up the app for the first time you’ll be asked to either link to your existing “OpenFeint” account or to start a new one. OpenFeint allows you to compare your scores to people around the world, as well as get achievements and network with other friends that have an iPod touch or iPhone!

The “Options” menu has a couple of different things. There is the ability to turn the music and sound effects on and off independently which is very nice! You also get to select a “chick” at this menu from three different options!

Once you’re ready to get started all you have to do is touch the “Play” button and select Single player. You’ll be taken straight to the gameplay screen. To control your “chick” you must tilt your device to the left and to the right.

As you move around there will be fire falling from the sky and there will gradually be more of it. It will also speed up as you get further in as well. The game keeps two separate scores, “Time” and “Distance.” These two scores are combined to reach your “Total” score.

When you play “multiplayer” the game is similar except you are able to throw bombs at your opponent to try and make them “lose” first. As with a lot of multiplayer games the connection works pretty good. It takes just a few seconds to connect and brings a whole new dimension to this game!

This game, like a lot of free apps, is supported by advertising. With that said, if you would rather support the developer directly you can choose to remove the ads through a $0.99 in-app purchase! With that said, if the advertisements don’t bother you you can still have the satisfaction of knowing that you are supporting the developer by view all of the advertisements!

Fast-paced gameplay and simplicity will make this game a winner for many people. There are very few games that are interesting for adults to play, and at the same time are easy enough for any child to play as well. Hot Chicks has managed to do this and make it look easy!
