In a matter of good timing, I never ended up needing any sort of scheduler or day planner until I first got my 1st generation iPod Touch. I had just gotten a new job that involved traveling around to a different location each day, doing different things at each place. Keeping track of that was nightmarish, and then I noticed my iPod Touch’s calendar features allowed me to track where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to do there, all in my pocket.  Great!

As such, when I upgraded to an iPhone it became something I used almost as much as the music features. Once I got my iPad, I loved the calendar upgrades even more, though I have been disappointed by a few of its limitations. For example, I’d love to be able to color coordinate events or locations, and I can’t. I’d also love to be able to sync my iPhone and iPad calendars, and I can’t do that either. At least, not without paying $100 a year for MobileMe, and that isn’t going to happen.

So when I got a chance to look at DejaOffice 2010, I was pretty excited. Being a universal app, I can use it on both my iPhone and iPad. This should mean I can sync between them, right? Wrong. If I were to pay between $70 and $130, it WOULD sync with Outlook, Lotus, and a large number of other business and productivity programs, but it won’t sync my iPhone and my iPad. So that’s a major disappointment.

But it’s also pretty much the only disappointment. That’s because it does so much personal management stuff that it makes it an ideal day-planner. It has a calendar, task list, day at a glance, expense tracking and notes, all with the ability to color code all in different categories so you can know at a glance.  All use the standard iOS style menu screens, which means a very small learning curve to using this to it’s fullest.

It also has access to your onboard contact list, though, since Apple doesn’t seem to allow access to the calendar that is unavailable, you’ll have to put in everything by hand (or pay the money for the syncing if your scheduling is on your computer). Again. But that’s out of their hands, so let’s be fair about it.

So, all of this functionality AND it’s free? Sounds win-win to me. Well, it would if I needed any of it.  Personally, I only need the calendar, and since it doesn’t give me syncing, I have no reason to change. But if you need that functionality (and you don’t mind paying for syncing if you need it), then you can’t miss.

Best Manager Secrets ($1.99)

Part and parcel with business management are the myriad books on different business management philosophies.  We’ve all seen books by the likes of Zig Ziglar and Donald Trump.  Business managers and the like also read books like The Art of War by Sun Tsu and The Book of the Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, which are detailed works on fighting and waging wars, not business management.  In any case, there’s a new author to add to the mix.

Best Manager Secrets is an ebook app by Ziv Aviv, written to share his knowledge of business management and what he does to encourage and inspire loyalty, dedication and a positive work ethic in his employees while also making sure that his bosses know he’s the right man for the job.

Divided into 10 chapters, his management philosophy might best be described as brand management, with you (and, by extension, the team you manage) as the brand you’re managing.  As such, each of the 10 chapters discusses a different aspect of that; bringing your employees on board and getting them happy to be a part of your team, and getting your team noticed by others in the company to help on your own rise through the company.

The ebook itself is short, clocking in at 51 pages, making it a quick read.  And at $1.99 it is one of the cheapest business management books you’ll find around.  Unfortunately, I can’t really say how good his ideas are as I’m not a business person myself, but considering that businessmen and women spend thousands of dollars on books and courses on becoming a better manage, it certainly seems like a drop in the bucket.

The app is solid and easy to use, but plain, with very few features.  For example, while it will remember the last place you left as you were reading, there is no way to bookmark or highlight passages to re-read later.  With 10 clearly marked chapters, and with each chapter being only about 5 pages, it’s not that difficult to re-find a section you want to re-read, but it would be much more convenient to have bookmarking available.

Another problem is that there seems to have been no proofreading whatsoever; there are numerous grammatical mistakes and strange word choices; the title itself, Best Manager Secrets, is indicative of some of the odd-sounding English used.  However, it doesn’t detract from overall understanding, and the simple English and conversational tone macke it much easier to read and more accessible to a wider group of people, including someone like me whose eyes glaze over when looking at a management book.

But since I’m not a business manager, I don’t know that I’ll ever need the information in this ebook.   On the other hand, if you are one or considering becoming one, you might find this to be the best $2 you ever spent on career building.

Whether you’re looking to buy a new house, or you’re looking at refinancing a property, wouldn’t it be great to be able to figure out what a loan would look like anywhere on your phone? Well now you can with a $0.99 app called “Mortgage Calculator – The Amortizer” for the iOS!

The app itself is pretty simple. To calculate the costs of a loan just touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen and fill out the information that you see on the screen.  You’ll need to enter the purchase amount, down payment, interest rate, loan term, etc., and then touch the “Calculate” button in the upper right corner of the screen to figure out the costs associated with the proposed loan.

In addition to calculating the actual mortgage cost, you can also add in your escrow as well to get a more accurate number. To do that just touch the “Add Escrow Cost” button at the bottom of the loan information screen. You can then enter in each cost that is a part of your escrow individually, or you can add the total amount of your current escrow if you choose.

The loan breakdown that you get once you’ve calculated it offers a variety of interesting information. It calculates the total interest that you’ll pay on the loan, the total amount that you will pay on the loan if it goes as scheduled, and a breakdown of how much you will pay each month towards the interest and principal of the loan!

Another great feature of the app is the ability to generate PDF’s of the loan information and email them to anyone! To do this just touch the “Email PDF” button in the upper right corner of the screen. You’ll get the choice of whether or not to include the amortization schedule or not, and then you’ll be taken directly to a form email with the PDF attached to it.

My personal experience with this app is that it made it very easy to get quick figures on what a loan will cost you. Unfortunately what it does not have is a way to calculate what it will cost you to refinance a loan. With that said, the app is only $0.99, and the PDF email feature is a great way to share loan figures with people while on the go. This is a great app for monitoring the App Store. Something the is missing from the actual App Store. Being able to keep an eye on certain apps that you may find a little pricey, and know when there are going on sale, is a terrific feature, that will probably never be included by Apple. The “Changes and Updates at a glance” feature is great, if you’re interested in knowing what has recently been updated, or want to ignore updates and focus on new releases only. Seeing as this app is free, there is no reason we cannot recommend this app.

Are you in school studying for your MBA and still searching for that perfect study aid to help you with completely your degree? If that fits your description then you may find Pocket MBA Full Course (Part 1) an app would reading about.

This app is developed by Intersog and is similar to taking a course at your own pace. It is really nice, clean, in depth, and does a great job of offering something for different learning styles.

First of all you’ll notice when you launch the app that it has a great interface to it. It defaults to the main menu, which lists out the different courses that you can choose from, with a brief summary of each one. From here you will pick the subject you are interested in studying and proceed to Launch that course.

Once you choose and go into a course you’ll see it’s even broken down into chapters. After that it goes into pre-course expectations, which I think is great, so you will know what to expect to learn from each chapter. In addition, if you look along the bottom you’ll see that they offer the chapter in modes to read the text, study through flash cards, and even to take an exam.

A few things worth noting about this app ..

1. You can bookmark your progress or just any sections you would like to refer back to.

2. You can search for topics throughout the app through a handy search button.

3. There’s a handy glossary (specific to the application) so you can look up new words quickly and easily as you encounter them).

4. The app is quick, smooth, really clean, and just overall very nicely laid out. You can tell the developer put a lot of time into fine tuning this application.

My thoughts? If you’re studying for your MBA and need a great tool to give you that motivation and push to do well then this app is definitely worth looking at. Yes, it’s pricey but so is your education, right? Those Master’s classes aren’t cheap, trust me I know!

If doing well and not repeating courses is important to you then this app may be worth the investment. It’s very nice, seems very in depth, and may be what you need to give your education that extra boost, so check it out in the App Store today!

Group Call & Text by Callvine (Free)

Review – “Keeping in contact with groups of people the easy way!”

Do you regularly send text messages to the same groups of people? How would you like to be able to start up a group call without adding callers one at a time? Well wish no longer because now you can do that and more with Group Call & Text by Callvine!

The app itself is very straightforward. There is a menu bar along the bottom with 5 buttons. There is a button for calling and one for testing. There is also a “Groups” button that allows to divide your contacts yourself, a “Recents” button that shows all of your recent group calls and a “More” button that contains some basic setup options.

To set up a group text just touch the “Text Now” button at the bottom of the screen. At the top of the screen is a search bar. You can either type the name of the contact you want to add or just touch the little blue bookmark symbol on the right side of the search bar. Editing your list of contacts is simple as well. Just touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen to add things and “swipe” to delete just like you would on the iPhone’s mail app!

One of the things that I really noticed with this app is just how well it is designed to work with the iOS 4. Once you get ready to send a text message you are taken straight to the “Messages” app without leaving the Group Call & Text completely. Once you are finished with your message you will go straight back to the Group Call & Text main screen!

The group call feature is set up the exact same as the texting app. Once you get all of the people that you want to group call just touch the “place call” button and it will connect to all your friends. This section of the app offers the same “swipe” to delete method of the texting app.

While there are a lot of cool features in this app, the one that truly won me over is the “Groups” feature. Touching the “Groups” button in the lower left corner of the screen will take you to a screen where you can access, create and edit various lists of people that you call and/or text regularly!

Once you’ve created a group, touching it will bring up a menu with three options: Place Group Call, Send Group Text and Edit this Group. This is something that is sadly missing from the built in messages app on the iPhone. You can text people in a group, but there is really not a good way to keep several groups of people to send texts to regularly.

To make group calls with this app you will need to sign up for an account through CallVine. The group calling features are free for an introductory period that ends on Sept 7th, and texting is always free! Whether you find yourself regularly arranging group calls, or you just text to groups of people a lot this app is available for free. So don’t wait another minute, head to the App Store and download it for yourself today!

There are a lot of voice/text plans for your iPhone out there, depending on your provider. Some companies will offer a plan that allows you to call other people on the same network, for free. This is a great feature, but how can you tell for sure that the people in your contacts list are on the same network as you, to take advantage of this service?

DoubleCheck from Double IP S.A. looks to solve this problem. With a simple interface, you can type in any mobile number and find out what carrier that number is assigned to. Works with all carriers in over 200 countries. It identifies the mobile carrier, and marks it in your address book, so you can easily tell if you’re making a free call, or using your plan’s minutes.

When you open the app, you are brought to the “Checks” tab. This is where all the numbers you have checked will show up. The app comes with 10 free checks. After that you can add more, via in-app purchasing, in the “Store” tab.

The “Share” tab allows you to tell everyone about this great service. There is a pre-composed message, or you can edit it and add your own. It can be sent via email of SMS. Just select your method of choice and hit the Share button, and the message will open up in a new email or SMS message, right within the app.

The “About” tab gives you quick access to DoubleIP’s website, for more information on DoubleChecker, and other apps they may have available.

To check a new number, simply tap the “New” button in the upper right of the Checks screen. Tap the entry field and type in the number, using the dialer keyboard. Then tap “Check”. The process is pretty quick, and pretty accurate. The new number shows up on your “Checks” list right away, and once DoubleChecker discovers the carrier, it is automatically added. You can then tap the contact, and assign the carrier to the contact in your address book. This way, when you go to call some one, you know right away, whether they are on the same carrier as you, or not.

Over all, this is a great utility to help save you money on your monthly cell phone bill. It is available in the App Store now, for $.99.

Looking for a quick and easy VAT or sales tax calculator? If so then you may be interested in VAT Pro. It is a simple and easy to use calculator that not only works for US states but also includes a decent listing of international sales tax details.

When you open the app up, it defaults to a country’s tax information but it is very easy to change that. By hitting the Countries button it will not only take you to a listing of different countries that are already built into the app but it will also show you a listing of different states within the US. In addition you can also make custom rates as well in the event that the country you are wanting to reference is not yet listed.

After choosing the country, or state, that you want to use, the app reverts back to the default calculator screen. At this point the process is simple. In the first spot you will type in the cost of what you’re looking at and based on the stored values it will return to you both what the sales tax will be and also the total price of what you’re interested in. Easy enough!

Here are a few things you’ll find in this app:

In a nutshell this app is simple and easy to use. World Flights ($1.99)

Review – “Get the latest updates on your flights!”

If you travel a lot by plane you know it can be confusing sometimes trying to keep track of when planes are arriving and departing sometimes. Flights get delayed all the time, and even if it’s only a few minutes that could make a huge difference to you! Whether you’re just curious, or you really need to know, World Flights for iPhone will allow you to find out the latest flight information from anywhere!

The first thing you see when you open up this app is a screen with a map. If you allow the app to use your current position it will find the closest airport to your current position. to view information about that airport just touch the little arrow button next to the airport’s name. You’ll be taken to a screen where you can choose to view both international and domestic flights and flight schedules.

At the bottom of the airport information screen you’ll see two buttons. On the left side is a button that will give you directions to that airport. This button will launch Google Maps, and using you current alocation, give you detailed directions to the airport you are viewing. The second button on the right will give you the current weather, as observed at the airport you are viewing.

When you go to check out the flight information from this menu it’s divided into departures and arrivals. On the overview screen you’ll see everything from whether the flight is on schedule to it’s flight number and estimated time of arrival/departure. Touching any flight while you are viewing a list of them will take you to a detailed page of information on the specific flight.

So what if you’re not interested in flights from/to your local airport? All you have to do is go back to the main menu and touch the “Airport Search” button below the map on the left. This will allow you to look up any airport by country/state/city or by it’s unique airport code. If you go through a lot of the same airports regularly, you can also add them to your favorites list by touching the button in the upper right corner of the screen from the airport’s main menu!

While there are not a lot of “frills” in this app, I was very impressed with how easy it was to navigate. I did notice a few small bugs that the developers need to sharpen up. For example, there seems to be some small “caching” problems when you go back to view a flight schedule that you have opened up recently. However, the few times this did happen, restarting the app seemed to fix it immediately. I also noticed that not every airport has weather information available. With that said, I don’t think a lot of people are going to be using an app like this to check the weather so this will definitely not be a deal-breaker for most people.

Besides these relatively minor problems, this app can be extremely useful. It is a whole lot quicker to pull out your iPhone and use this app than it is to find similar information on the airline websites, and for business travelers this app will be well worth the money! Share Board is a iOS Universal whiteboard sharing App, meaning it’ll work full-size on either the iPad or iPhone (or iPod Touches, obviously), a new and welcome introduction to the App Store, and one feature I think is worth more than the value of the App itself. Universal Apps need only be downloaded once and work perfectly on both platforms – unlike some iPad-Only versions of iPhone Apps, or worse, iPhone Apps that ‘work on’ iPad, but require the 2x Button to be any larger.

So what exactly is a Whiteboard Sharing App anyways? Well, the concept and execution are fairly simple – but very effective. You have a white space, and you fill it with notes, drawings, pictures, whatever you please. I’ll first go over the creating portion, then cover the sharing part.

To start a new White Board, what you’re actually doing is creating a server, or hosted board. Like a Chat Room, if you will. The tools you can use to ‘write on’ your whiteboard are Pen, Marker and Highlighter (or Eraser), you have four colors to choose from for each the marker or pen. You can also import photographs from your photo library. You can also add text (however, it always creates a border with drop-shadow making a whole box, which I found a little annoying – if there’s a setting to turn this bordering off, I couldn’t find it) anywhere on the whiteboard.

As fantastic as a whiteboard App itself on it’s own is (and this one is still pretty great), this one is extra awesome because of the sharable feature. Like I said earlier, when you first create a whiteboard, what you’re creating is the hosting page or server for other users to connect. Once you’re connected you can both edit and see the others edits in real-time, as they draw them. I easily set up a communal whiteboard between my iPhone and iPad and had a bit of fun with it. I bet this would be super-fun in a room with several iPad users.

Sharing and Saving are super-easy. You would not believe the number of Apps out there that don’t let you save your progress on something like this, or more likely, you can save but not continue the same session later. Luckily Share Board lets you do both. From within the board itself you can share by saving to your Photo Library, posting to Facebook or my Email. From within your ‘Saved’ Boards you can also export your whiteboard to your saved photos and from there you can do with it whatever you can manage to do with all photos, email, tweet, Facebook – however these options are not built in in the Saved Section. However, if you open your Saves and ‘Continue’ Work on them you can once again (from within the editor) share via all of the methods mentioned above.

Other than that one quibble, this is a great App – if you need a platform to share ideas and whiteboard-like notes, I highly recommend it!

I have looked through many (many!) to do lists on the App Store, trying to find a one size fits all app for what I need. I don’t have a problem making my todo list .. I have a problem remembering to pull my list up when I’m near my errands!

Guess what .. there’s now an app for that! Enters Toogo. ..

Developed by Benjamin Nelson, this app is simple and straightforward, but super handy when it comes to reminding you of your daily errands. In a nutshell this app gives you the ability to create location – based to dos .. and then reminds you of your errands when you are near them. Sounds great, doesn’t it?

When you first open the application it defaults to the map screen, which looks similar to an application like Google Maps.

At the top you’ll see Settings, where you can change the map view and even enable the multi-tasking option for the application (when applicable on your device). At the bottom left you’ll see an icon that you will press to find your location (again on applicable devices). In the middle you can toggle between a Map View of your to dos, or a List View. At the bottom right hand side you’ll see the ‘+’ button, which is how you add a new location.

By default your map is empty aside from your current location marking. Pressing the ‘+’ button will take you to the screen where you can add new to do. It asks you for a Name (which will show up on either the list or the map), Location, and a location radius to which you should be notified (either 1/2, 1, 2, 5, or 10 miles).

By clicking the Location button it will default to your current location (if known), however you can either type in an address at the top or you can simply drag the little pin to the location you want it to be at.

(***NOTE .. this part appears to only work when multi-tasking is ENABLED on an iPhone that supports it***)  Now comes the fun part. After giving your to do a name, location, and notification radius it is added to your list. When you are driving along and move within your specified radius a popup will appear and remind you of your errand. How handy is that?!?!

My only concern with this app is that it may be battery draining, since it appears to leave the GPS option on your phone active the entire time, through multi-tasking. However I have not used it long enough to confirm or deny this… but I can note a swifter decrease in battery usage and my phone, when not is use, feels warmer than it did before using this app.

If you have a device that can fully support the ability of this app I’d suggest heading over to the App Store now and grabbing your copy at the bargain price of $0.99. While I am thinking it may use a little more battery than your phone sitting idle it may be a minimal tradeoff to how handy this app can be for your every day errands.

Review – “Go beyond AppleCare with an accident protection plan!”

While the iPhone is jam-packed full of features, one of the things that many people worry about is how to protect it. While the glass screen allows for a very sensitive and accurate touch screen interface, it is also fragile if dropped on a hard service at the wrong angle. While Apple has great customer service, their Applecare packages and manufacturer warranty do not cover accidental damage. That’s where this app comes in!

Protect iPhone 4less is an app that is built by SquareTrade. SquareTrade is one of the leaders in selling warranties for consumer electronic products. They specialize in warranties that cover all kinds of accidental damage!

There have actually been several companies to come out and offer extended warranties for the iPhone. What sets this apart from the rest of the pack is how easy it is to sign up! While they offer all kinds of information on their website about what the warranty covers and how much it costs, if you just want protection without worrying about all the details you can do it in minutes with this app!

The app itself is small. It only took me a few seconds to download and install. When you open the app the first screen you’ll see offers information on how much the warranties cost. If you bought your iPhone in the last 30 days it is $99 for 2 years or $5.99 a month. If you didn’t buy it in the last 30 days the price goes up a little to $149 for 2 years or $7.99 a month. In either case the warranty covers everything that AppleCare does, with the addition of accidental damage coverage with a $50 deductible.

Once you decide you want to purchase a warranty there is a 3 step process. (1) Touch the “Get Coverage” button and fill out the information, (2) enter your payment info, (3) review and submit your order! I was literally able to order my insurance plan through them in less than 5 minutes. As soon as your order is processed you’ll receive a confirmation email with all of the warranty terms included.

I did not have any problems ordering with this app, and it includes all of the information that you would expect to be able to review and make sure you are getting what you want to protect your iPhone. While the warranty does cost slightly more than AppleCare, it offers accidental damage protection, which could save you several hundred dollars if your iPhone gets severely damaged.

To sum all of this up, if you want a plan that truly protects you from having to worry about what will happen if your iPhone gets damaged, you won’t find it cheaper or easier than you will with SquareTrade. Full Screen Keyboard ($1.99)

Review – “Larger keyboard provides alternative to iOS’s built in keyboard”

If you’ve spent hours practicing and still can’t get used to typing on the iPhone’s small keyboard this app may be for you. Full Screen Keyboard is an app that is designed to help you type faster by increasing the size of your keyboard by 100%!

Right when you open up the app you’ll see that the entire screen starts out as a keyboard. So I’m sure your first questions is, “if the keyboard fills the whole screen then where does the text I type show up?” The answer is that it shows up behind your keyboard. the basic idea is that your keyboard is in the foreground but is transparent.

The first thing you’ll notice if you’re already fairly familiar with the iPhone’s keyboard layout is that this one feels quite a bit different. First of all it only works in landscape mode, but secondly the letters are just laid out different. The “Q” is above the top row of letters on the left side, and all of the punctuation that is not on the “numbers” page is at the top of the screen.

There are a few basic options that you can set up by touching the settings button in the lower left corner of the screen. You can change the buttons color, the text color, and how transparent(opaque) the keyboard is. You can also change the font size here as well.

Once you get a block of text saved it’s simple to transfer it to whatever app you want to. Touching the button that looks like an underscore in the lower left corner of the screen will bring up a small menu of options to help you get your text where you need it. You can easily transfer the text you type to sms messages, emails or even use your text as a search query directly from within this app by touching the appropriate button!

While this app probably wouldn’t have been all that useful not too long ago, with the multitasking features that are built into iOS 4 this is no longer the case! Full Screen Keyboard has full iOS 4 support and will allow you to quickly switch back and forth between itself and other apps without losing what you were working on!

So while the feature set seems nice, and the interface is simple, an app like this always comes down to how well it really performs on typing! After using this app for a while I was definitely more accurate on hitting the correct letters when trying to type things quickly.

With all that said I did have a couple of issues with Full Screen Keyboard as well. The first one is the backspace key. While all of the other letters and keys have a little bit of delay in them which allows you to quickly touch them once and be done, the backspace key does not. This makes it easy to quickly delete a lot of characters, the problem with that is that sometimes you delete a lot of characters without even meaning to!

The second issue I had is with the way that caps lock/shift works in this app. There is only one button for shift/caps, which is represented by an up-pointing arrow. This one button basically works as a caps lock. The problem is that there is really no way to easilycapitalize just the first letter of a word, even if it is the first word in a new sentence! This is not a big deal if you’re just texting, but if you’re trying to type an email with this app it gets old fast!

To sum it all up, I definitely see a lot of potential in this app, and I’m sure it will continue to get better as the developers work on it. Even in it’s current state though I definitely can see how this app could be very useful if you have large thumbs and/or you have trouble typing fast on the iPhone’s keyboard. iDiscrete ($1.99)

Review – “Keep prying eyes away from your important files!”

Whether you are working with top secret documents, or you just want to keep sales figures or private files safe, iDiscrete is an extremely useful app! The basic idea of iDiscrete is that most people will not even know what it is when they see it. You actually access the app by entering in a code using the hidden buttons on the “loading” screen.

When you open up iDiscrete for the firsttime it tells you that you should read the tutorial information under the “settings” area of the app. While the information there is good, I didn’t really need most of it to figure the app out myself.

The first thing you’ll want to do when you open the app is set the security settings by touching the “Settings” button in the upper right corner and then touching “Protection Settings.” Once you enable protection you’ll need to set up your “Touch Sequence,” how long the app gives you to enter it and a “Reset Code.”

Once you have set up your security options when you open the app you’ll be greeted by a “Loading” screen. It’s at this screen that you enter in your “Touch Sequence” to open up the actual app. If you don’t enter the sequence in the time limit that you selected you’ll be taken to a screen titled “My Notes.” If for some reason you forget or cannot get your touch sequence to work all you have to do to reset your security settings is enter in the “Reset Code” that you have into the text box on this page.

The interface of the app itself is much like other file sharing apps that I have seen in the past. By default you have three different folders: “Images,” “Video,” and “Text.” You can modify these folders or add files or folders to the main folder by touching the button in the upper left corner.

Adding pictures and video can be done from the media in your camera roll, or you can also upload media from your computer via a simple web browser interface. You can also upload a variety of different types of documents to the app as well. The app supports all the formats you would expect from PDF and DOC files to just plain text. Unfortunately the only types of documents that you can edit within this app are paling text files.

The speed and ease of use are what really separate iDiscrete from a lot of other apps like it. It’s creative use of a “Loading” screen to log in to the app will also keep a lot of people from even attempting to gain access to this app. It also helps make logging into the app much quicker that other more traditional methods, as you’ll see in the embedded video below.

Whether you have personal reasons for keeping certain things safe on your phone, or you have professional interest in documents that you need to have on you all of the time, iDiscrete is a great solution! That, coupled with the fact that it’s available for just $1.99 will make this app a real must have for a lot of people. So what are you waiting for? With all of the apps available in the App Store, good productivity apps are still probably the hardest to find. With these this in mind I would encourage you to not to write of PrintBureau just because of it’s premium price of $14.99. Eurosmartz, Ltd. has released a variety of different productivity apps, and has recently released PrintBureau as an app that not only contains all of the features of their previous apps, but has custom built interfaces for both the iPhone/iTouch and the iPad!

When you open up PrintBureau on your iPhone or iTouch the first thing you’ll see is a circular menu with all of the different options you have available. In the upper right corner of the screen is also a “Settings” button. On the settings screen you can set a wide variety of customizable options from email default settings to clipboard management and security options.

When you choose an option from the menu you’ll be taken to a screen with icons along the bottom. These are a little difficult to get used to at first, but I was able to quickly figure them out. For example, in the “Clipboard” menu you have the ability to transfer clipboard items between computers, check or uncheck all of the clipboard items, and then options to delete, transfer, move, or email items as well as view them full-screen.

Probably the most useful functions of this app are the clipboard transfers and the email area of the app. Once you enter your account information into the app you can not only view your email and attachments, but you can also print emails and attachments, save emails, or manage your emails from directly within the app. If at any time you want to view a document using the full screen all you have to do is shake your device and you can!

Now I’m sure you’re all anxious to find out how printing works. For a lot of printers, especially those that you can connect directly to via WiFi, you should be able to print to them directly without any major problems. Thankfully though, if you can’t get your printer to work in this way, EuroSmartz offers a simple software package that will enable PrintBureau to print and also transfer information with your PC or Mac computer!

If you are using this app on your iPad, you will not only see a slightly different UI, but you’ll also have a a few more options available with this app! Additional iPad features include being able to transfer documents and files through iTunes, opening documents directly into iWork for editing, and the ability to use the iPad’s “Open in…” feature to open up documents from the iWorks suite, from your email, or from various other apps that support this new feature!

All things considered, the only thing negative I really have to say about this app is that there are some small parts of the interface that are a little difficult to understand. Sometimes the menu icons at the bottom of the screen are a little difficult to figure out, and there is no text below them to explain them.

Even with a few minor shortcomings, I have to say that this is by far the most comprehensive app of its kind that I have seen.  I’ve already found it quite useful in my own experience.  And since this app works on both the iPhone and the iPad, it’s hefty price tag will be justified in the eyes of many. If you have been looking for an easy way to transfer information and print with your iPhone and iPad, this app could easily be the best $15 that you ever spend in the App Store! Project Planner ($2.99)

Have you ever wished that there was a way to create and manage your projects directly from your mobile device? Well now you can do just that with Project Planner by Peritum.Net! Not only will this app allow you to manage your projects, it also has features for sharing them through email and wifi with your computer in a variety of different formats as well!

Project Planner loads up very quickly, and you start out looking at a very simple menu. To get started editing/adding projects all you have to do is touch the “Projects” button. On the following screen you’ll see a list of all your current projects. In the bottom left corner of the screen is a “+” button that you can use to add a new project. If you want to delete entries from the project list you can either touch the “Edit” button in the upper right corner, or you can use the “swipe” delete method from the email app.

Something that is immediately evident is the attention to detail in this app. If you are familiar with the Gantt Chart method of tracking projects you’ll instantly feel at home with the interface of this app! Project entries have everything from the project name and project leader, down to dates and custom calendar settings!

Adding tasks to a project is just as easy! All you have to do is touch one of your projects and then touch the “+” button in the lower left corner of the screen, and enter the task information. You can also edit tasks in the same way as projects by using the “Edit” button, or by swiping to delete as well.

To view a Gantt chart of any projects that you might choose all you have to do is touch the “Gantt Chart” button from the main menu, select the projects to view, and then touch the “Chart” button in the upper right corner of the screen. The chart can be viewed in Day, Week, or Month mode by using the buttons at the top of the screen!

Importing and Exporting files is extremely easy, and this app offers a lot of options for doing so! You can export files via WiFi or through email in PDF, Gantt, or PNG. Importing is done via your computers web browser, and is very simple as well. The only limitation is that imported Gantt files cannot import resources that may be used with your desktop applications.

There are a few other options that can be configured in the “Options” menu. The most notable of these is the ability to secure the app with a “PIN” that must be entered every time you open this app up if you turn it on. You can also use this area of the app to control what exactly is exported when you export as a PDF file, and view information about the developers!

My overall impression of this app is that it may be a little intimidating to someone that is new working with project planners. While the interface will seem almost second nature to someone familiar with Gantt Charts, the little details can get a little confusing. If you do have trouble with anything though, the developers have a full manual available on their website listed below for your reference.

As far as functionality, I didn’t have any problems at all with this app. the load times when working on projects are relatively quick, and it’s easy to quickly view information in a variety of different formats! If project management on the go is a must for you, this app is an absolute steal at just $2.99! So what are you waiting for? Head to the App Store and check out Project Planner today!

Trippo VoiceMagix ($9.99)

Review – “Your iPhone becomes a pocket interpreter!”

If you’re constantly in need of quick translations from other languages Trippo VoiceMagix may be what you’re looking for! While a lot of translation tools offer free translation and then “nickel and dime” you to support audible translations, Trippo VoiceMagix offers this feature and more! Best of all, Cellictica is offering their new app $9.99 instead of $24.99 as a limited time launch promotion!

First I’d like to not that this app supports audio on an impressive amount of languages (13 as of the current version), and it will translate 27 different translations. When you open up VoiceMagix you’re taken straight to the translation screen. From here you’ll have two options for entering in text. You can either highlight the “text” box and type in your sentence, or you can touch the small microphone icon to the right of the box and speak the sentence that you want translated!

The speech recognition in this app is very good. If you were wanting to be able to translate to and from various languages easily though, English is the only language that has built in voice recognition support! The only downside really is that it uses the internet to do the translation. This, unfortunately will make this app much less useful for someone traveling abroad without a data plan on their iPhone.

Selecting new languages to use is simple. There are two select boxes at the top of the main screen. The one on top is the language that you are translating from, and the second one is the language you are translating to. When you touch either select box it will bring up a list of all of the languages that are available. If you’re not sure if the app has voice support for the language you’re looking for you’ll notice little speaker icons or microphones next to languages that do support these features.

Once you fill something into the text box, all you have to do to translate it is either touch the “Translate” button or the “Speak” button. It will then translate it and then read it if you touched the “Speak” button. The voices all sounded pretty good, and was able to easily understand the languages that I was at least somewhat familiar with.

Another interesting feature of this app is the ability to quickly send an email that you have filled with translated text! After you have those a phrase and had it translated you’ll notice a small “letter” icon between the “Translate” and “Speak” buttons. Touching it will bring up a new email message with the text you translated pasted in as the body of the message.

As I mentioned before, the main downside of this app is that it is tied to having an internet connection available.  While this is going to be a make or break feature for some, if it’s something you can live with, the performance of this app is tremendous! It’s also important to note that if you are wanting to translate for one specific language there are probably cheaper alternatives that are available.

All things aside, this app is a great value for all of the features that it contains. Especially if you are really planning on using more than one of the 27 languages in this app is definitely worth it! Review – “Save time and money with Route4me!”

Whether you’re running errands, calling on clients, or just looking at houses to buy or rent, Route4me is an app that can not only save you time, but money as well! How does it work? All you have to do is enter in all of the places that you want to visit in any order, and Route4me will automatically set up a “route” that will take you to all of your destinations in the quickest/shortest way possible!

When you open this app up the first thing you’ll need to do is enter your email address. This is just to create an account which will allow you to easily share route information with other iPhone users or to send them to your email address so that you can open them up in your browser and print them off!

Something I noticed right away with this app is how the developers tried to keep everything as simple as possible. When you open up Route4me the first screen you’ll see is the “Destinations” screen. This is where you will enter in all of the places that you want to go! The first address on your list will be your “Departure” address. You can either enter it manually or use your current location by touching the button in the lower left corner of the screen.

Entering in destinations is simple. All you have to do is touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen and then type in the address! You can also touch the “Address Book” button to enter in an address from your contacts instead of typing it manually! Once you get all of your destinations filled in you’re ready to create your route! To do so all you have to do is touch the “Plan Route” button at the bottom of the screen.

Once your route has been calculated you can access it by touching one of the menu options at the bottom of the screen. There are two different ways to view your route information besides the default list of destinations: “Map” and “Directions.” The map view will just give you an overview of where all of your destinations are on the map, while the directions view will give you detailed turn by turn directions between each point on your route!

A little bit of a disclaimer here. If you’re looking for a complete GPS navigation solutions, this is not the app you are looking for! While the directions that it gives are accurate, and it is extremely easy and quick to enter in your destinations, there is no easy way to receive these directions in real-time as you are driving. With that said, this app is a great way to find the quickest/shortest way to visit multiple locations. This is something that you can’t really do with a traditional GPS app because you have to enter the order of your destinations manually!

So in short, when this app is used for it’s intended purpose, which is finding optimal routes for visiting multiple locations, it will save you time and money.  It’s extremely simple to use, and it even looks great on the iPad if you’re looking to plan your routes from home! Newsy for iPad (Free)

Review – “News taken to a whole new level!”

You may remember a while back when I reviewed the Newsy app for iPhone and iPod Touch. Well if you like staying up to date on all the latest news stories, and you have an iPad, Newsy has created an amazingly easy to use interface. The best thing is that even with the new interface and features, the app is still completely free!

When you open up Newsy for iPad you’ll begin on the “All” screen which will show you all the latest news stories on newsy.com! There are two great interfaces in this app, one for landscape mode, and the other for portrait mode. The landscape mode feels a lot like the iPhone app. On the right side of the screen you’ll see large thumbnails of videos. You can “swipe” through them to find one you want to watch. Once you do find one all you have to do is touch it to start playing!

On the left side of the screen is a bar full of filters that you can use to quickly find the types of stories that you’re most interested in. These filters range from Politics and World News to stories related to business and entertainment! Switching between filters is pretty seamless, and actually is surprisingly fast with the quality of the thumbnails that you see on the videos.

Now don’t get me wrong, the landscape interface is great, and it looks amazingly smooth. With that said, the portrait interface is by far my favorite in this app! Why you ask? Well in portrait mode instead of getting a bunch of large thumbnail images on top of each other you get lots of small thumbnails in a grid format. This makes it extremely easy to quickly browse a large amount of content and find the stories that you find most interesting!

Another great thing about portrait mode is that at the bottom of the screen there’s a small empty window to create a list of videos to view. All you have to do is find the videos you’re interested it, touch and hold on them for a second, and then drag them into the empty box. Once you have all of the videos that you want to see, all you have to do is touch play and it will automatically start playing the first video! After that video is done, it will display an image of the next video and show you a button to start playing the next video on your list!

Whether you’re in portrait or landscape mode, there are several options below the videos while they are playing. Not only can you view and post comments on the video, but you can actually read a full transcript of it while you watch! There are a few other options as well for viewing the “sources” for the current video and for sharing the video on various social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

In the upper right corner of the screen you’ll notice a small search bar. This is really useful if you’re looking to see if there is a video related to a specific story. another great thing about the search feature is that it actually searches the entire library of stories on Newsy, and not just the most recent ones!

The only real problem I had with this app is that I had the video quit playing for me one time. Apparently the developers are already aware of this bug though and are working to fix it. In the mean time they’re solution is to restart your iPad if/when you start having trouble playing video. When I did restart, I didn’t have any trouble playing videos once again!

If you are the kind of person that wants to stay updated on the latest stories, but you’re tired of just getting one point of view, Newsy for iPad might be just the thing you’ve been looking for! Not only do they report news from multiple points of view, but they bring it to you in a way that is extremely easy to digest, and that doesn’t require you to do hours of your own research to get the true story. so what are you waiting for? Quick Cancel US (Free)

Review – “A great app to have when the unthinkable happens!”

We’ve probably all known someone that has lost their wallet or purse at some point in time. There’s that sense of panic, and then you realize that you need to get everything canceled right away! The problem is that all of the numbers you need to call to cancel your cards are on the cards that you lost! Well thanks to Quick Cancel, when this kind of situation arises, all you need to know is what banks you hold accounts with and you’ll be able to quickly generate a list of numbers that you’ll need to call!

When you open up Quick Cancel, the first thing you’ll see is a brief opening screen with a “Start” button at the bottom. Once you press start you’ll be taken to a list of banks to choose from. While there are quite a few banks on this list (and the developers have been working on adding more), if you have a local bank, chances are you probably won’t find it here because most of the banks listed are the more nationally known ones.

Once you’re done selecting all of your bank account sources all you have to do is touch the “Next” button in the upperright corner. This brings up a list of Credit Card institutions. Do the same as you did with the banks and touch the “Next” button again and you’ll be shown a list of phone carriers.

After you get all of your information entered in you’ll be taken straight to a list of numbers that you need to call! Not only does this app give you a list, but it also makes it easy to call, and keep track of which numbers you’ve called already! To call any number, all you have to do is touch the “Call” button to the right of it. After you make a call using one of the “Call” buttons your list will be saved. when you open the app up again you’ll be greeted by that same list of numbers with any numbers that you’ve already called showing a “Cancelled” button instead of the “Call” button.

I found that this app was both extremely easy to use and it did exactly what it was designed to do! While obviously, this is not the type of app that you hope you will ever need. With that said, in an emergency this app could be a real life-saver! As I mentioned, I did have a little difficulty finding a few organizations, but it was mainly because they were more local organizations. Whether you have a friend that recently lost their wallet or purse, or you personally have lost something, I would definitely recommend that you check this app out!
