Normally I am not a big fan of arcade games that are 2d and simply have you collecting bits of cheese or pebbles but this one has some extra charm that makes it very amusing. It also comes with a three different games that have different goals but the same basic controls but slightly different idea which make it very fun.
The first game that most people will try is Challenges mode. This gives you 15 different levels to try and work through in order to get the most cheese without dying. These levels will include obstablces and enemies that you have to avoid or jump over. The important thing to remember is that the movements of the rat are constant, he will only stop when he reaches a stop sign. Whenever he does reach a stop sign you are given the opportunity to look around and plan whatever moves you have coming up.
The controls are very simple. To get him to jump you simply tap the screen. The longer you tap, the higher he jumps, which is great for getting to high platforms or clearing enemies and obstacles. It is important to not over jump as well because you might find yourself running into enemies that you did not plan for.
The game also includes an arcade mode which comes with 8 different levels. This version is more arcade style with plenty of obstacles and cheese as well. The goal here is to clear levels and reach the floor but be careful because one hit against an enemy or an obstacle and you are done for.
The final game that is included is Rat on a Scooter. This is a completely randomized level in which your little rat is on a scooter and jumping from platform to platform in order to collect cheese doodles. If you fall you lose and you must try again to see if you beat your score.
Overall I think this is a great take on the classic arcade style games and the graphics were very cute. I think it could use a few more levels because 15 levels will not take you long to beat, especially since two of them are tutorial levels. The game is also very simple which means I do not see it getting very challenging but it is a great little game for when you’ve got a few minutes to spare, which is something I love about iPhone games.
The other thing I miss is having a story line to go with the game. In the developer notes it states that you play a rat tryign to fatten himself up for winter and has purchased his dream home filled with cheese, but unfortunately it is rigged with traps and monsters. Apparently this little rat did not feel the need to actually look inside the home before he purchased it. I would have liked a better story and something that felt more like the game was working toward something rather than simply beating midly repetitive levels.
But the problems are relatively mild considering and I think it has enough positives to justify the regular $.99 price (it is currently on sale for an unknown amount of time.)
