Potion Action – iPhone App Review

Potion Action ($1.99)

Version 1.0

“Whack-A-Kitty, better and more interesting than Moles”

Potion Action is a simple, but addictive game. Not unlike Whack-a-Mole, your object is to make sure you give potion, in the right amounts to certain kitties as they pop up from the sewers below the city. But you have to be quick – and on your toes, because there are several different kinds of kitty and they will try and trip you up.

There’s the kitty that simply needs potion, there’s the kitty that will hurt you if you give them potion (and not coincidentally these kitties look strikingly similar). Some trick you with numbers, some frequently wear helmets, and many other cunning little guys. After the first few rounds you’ll realize that it’s not as strait forward and quickly you’re thrown into a situation where you have to be quick, and smart, to stay in the game.

The depth of this game is not only shown by it’s great progression of difficultly throughout the levels, and it’s clean, colorful art – but also by the in-game details that go beyond hitting kitties with potion bottles. To unlock the ‘Free Mode’ (as opposed to the ‘Arcade Mode’) you need to complete more levels in the Arcade section. Collecting coins is not just for points, but you can actually upgrade your potions, speed and health.  For two dollars, you’re going to get a game that you’ll keep coming back to, again and again.

Especially after you’ve unlocked the Free Mode, here you can play just a quick round or two, and not worry about your overall stats, perfect for when you have a quick train ride, quick wait in line, or just a few minutes to spare while in an elevator. Also, you can keep track of your High Scores for each mode separately, there’s the Arcade high scores, and the Free Mode high scores. Unfortunately, OpenFeint support is not included, so you’ll be the only one who knows how awesome you are at giving potion to sewer cats, although I hope the developers think about adding this feature in a future update.

The only other downfall is that, although you can save games in progress, if you die that’s it – you’ve got to start over. But I suppose that’s fair, and very nostalgic.

I highly recommend anyone looking for a face paced, addictive game that will keep you coming back.  Check out a few more screenshots below (click to enlarge):
