REVIEW – “A pig is running through the woods for some reason. And it’s in a rush. That’s about the extent of the story in Pig Rush.”

A pig is running through the woods for some reason. And it’s in a rush. That’s about the extent of the story in Pig Rush. Why is this pig running? Who knows.

Anyway, as the pig races across the screen, you tap to make it jump from platform to platform over bottomless pits, and avoid fire. Tap low on the screen for a low jump, tap high on it for a high jump. That’s pretty much it.

But I wouldn’t be making this post were it not unbelievably addictive for some reason. Pig Rush has this crazy combination of everything that is right for a casual game.

The controls are simple, but surprisingly tight. After playing for a few minutes, controlling the pig becomes second nature. When you tap, you know how the pig will respond. When you jump and land at the edge of a cliff, barely making it, there’s a little bit of resistance and a slight ‘bump’ that just feels right. This is a huge part in its addictive nature – when you make a mistake and the pig plummets to its death, you don’t get angry at the game. Like old school games, the controls are so simple yet precise, you only have yourself to blame, so you’re compelled to do better.

Admittedly, I had a bit of an issue with tapping on the play area (you can tap anywhere on the screen’s upper or lower area, in landscape mode, to make the pig jump), because my hand often obstructs my view of the obstacles. I’m not sure if having a dedicated tap area would be worth sacrificing screen real estate for, but it may be worth looking into. Then again, after a few rounds I unconsciously started tapping areas of the screen that wouldn’t hamper gameplay, so maybe it isn’t worth it.

The game’s graphics and art are simple, but look great. The pig, trees, and obstacles are colorful, and have thick dark lines. The semi-3D effect of the landscape is also quite cool.

Unfortunately, there are not enough obstacles or elements in the game. In fact, other than fire and holes, there are none. For such a lack of content, it’s surprising the game doesn’t get boring sooner.

This game definitely needs work, so hopefully the makers will release an update soon. But still, at 99 cents, you can’t go wrong.
