For as long as I can remember, I have always loved photography. From my play cameras as a child to getting my very first SLR in college, the art of photography has 
always been something that I enjoyed. And although I enjoy viewing other people’s photography as much as taking my own, finding the time to go out on my own has become increasingly difficult as a full-time job all but consumes my life. Nonetheless, the moments that I find are that much more important to me. After discovering the Nikon Learn & Explore app, I found a renewed sense of inspiration, motivation and education all while reminding me that you can always make time for you something that you love.

fter my first photography class in college, I thought I was on my way to being a professional. It took me a long time and over four years in a relationship living with a professional photographer to learn that there is a difference between someone who can take a compositionally good photograph and someone who can take a technically good photograph – my boyfriend can do both (I cannot). What I have discovered with the Nikon Learn & Explore app is that starting out compositionally is a great place to begin and can really move you forward, but where you go from there is based on hard work, dedication and really learning about what you do.
In addition to be a very complex and technical hobby or profession, photography is very subjective and has more elements to it than a lot of other hobbies. The dedication that is required to learn both the technical aspect of it and the ability to appreciate it can take years to learn. This app is a great way to search through photos, archives, articles and a wealth of information to refresh and relearn or just learn something new. The interface is simple and easy to use the option to bookmark articles, photos and lessons is key.
While exploring this app I discovered photographers I had never heard of, techniques that were long since forgotten and inspiration that had been missing for quite a while. To feel that sense as though you are part of a community that encourages learning and is waiting to see what you can produce and is there to help you produce, is no better feeling. This app not only re-inspired me, it sparked an interest in a lot of the technical things I had never before been interested in.
With the option to browse by images, I was immediately taken with certain photographs and after clicking on all of them, I discovered that not only can you read the notes from the photographer of any particular photograph, you can watch video, listen to audio, view more photos or see additional literature related to that particular photographer or image as long as it is available. All of these features and the information that it provides take away people will often assume in another’s work. A lot of the articles are written by the photographer and explain their inspiration or what equipment they used. The Nikon Learn & Explore app takes the guessing out of it and allows you to see through the photographer’s eyes.
While I am still searching through the photos, reading the articles and keeping my creative channels open for all of the new information to be learned, I also discovered the “Insights & Techniques” tab in addition to the “Glossary”, “Nikon World” and option to mark anything as a favorite. Nikon really went over the top when creating this app and I greatly appreciate it. They didn’t stop at a place to look at photographs but they made it into it’s own mini-school or learning center with techniques, tricks, advice, information and a whole lot more.
If you haven’t downloaded this app and you have any interest in photography whatsoever, I am not sure what it is you are waiting for. But whether you are a beginner, intermediate, expert or somewhere in between, this app has a lot of information to offer and even more incredible images to browse. You have nothing to lose in downloading this app and I highly recommend it.
