REVIEW – “The new kid on the block packs a punch!”
Since the release of iPhone 3.0 there have been a variety of GPS apps that have entered the App Store. 
They have been released by developers both big and small, and each one of them has offered a slightly different interface and database of information. While it may seem that the market for GPS apps has slowed down some over the last few months, One of the biggest producers of GPS hardware and software, Magellan, has just recently released an iPhone version of its GPS app!
One of the first things that I noticed about this app is the visual style. The use of color in this app really brings important things to your attention quite well without being 
distracting! I also enjoyed the text-to-speech engine as well. There are several different voices you can choose from, including two that will do “text-to-speech:” one male voice and a female one!
The interface for this app is extremely simple, and yet at the same time easy to customize how you want it. Once you open up RoadMate you are taken to the main map screen where you have the map of where you are in the top area of the 
screen and a menu across the bottom! From here it is easy to quickly do a search around the map for a road or Point of Interest.
In the bottom left corner is a display that shows either your current speed, the current time or the direction you are currently headed. Right above that button is “-“ button that will zoom you out and a “+” button on the far right that will zoom you in. As with many GPS apps this one includes iPod playback controls. These can be accessed by touching the button just above the “+” button on the right screen. Unfortunately if you listen to a lot of podcasts, they will not show up in your list; however you can start your music in the iPod list and then start up this app if you prefer.
The other two buttons at the bottom of the screen are the “Menu” button in the center and the “One Touch” button in the lower right corner. The menu button will bring up a variety options that will allow you to do things like select an objective by address, from your 
contacts, check your previous destination and even return home once you have set your home’s location set within the app!
But perhaps my favorite feature is the “One Touch” feature of this app. Touching the “One Touch” button in the bottom right corner will bring up a variety of options that you can perform in just one touch. The default options allow you to quickly search the POI database, find a gas station nearby, Or even mark your current location so that you will be able to find you car after a long afternoon of shopping! And that is another thing that sets this app apart from the competition. Not only can you find your parking space with this app but it also has software for giving you walking as well as those designed for driving around!
The best thing about the “One Touch” feature of this app is that it is completely customizable. You can set it up to search for pretty much 
anything, and it makes this app extremely to use once you have everything setup the way that you want!
One of the big things in an app like this is whether the POI and street database. Without these being accurate the app serves no purpose. I am happy to report that I got above average results from Magellan Roadmate as I was testing it. Really the only app that I have found to have more accurate POI results was the TomTom app and I liked the interface of this app better as I was able to customize it to my liking much better.
To sum it all up, if you have been looking for a solid GPS app that is backed by a major GPS manufacturer then you need look no further than Magellan’s, RoadMate! WhileTomTom’s app is very good and probably offers some of the most accurate maps, it seems to lack in some of the slick interface and features of this app and others like it! In addition to all of these things, now is really the time to grab this app if you are interested. Why you say? Because it is currently $20 off for a limited time only! So what are you waiting for? Is the Magellan GPS Navigation for the iPhone 3GS for France a separate one, and what does it cost? Is the voice in English or French? Are the GPS systems for the Eastern USA and the Western USA separate systems with separate costs for each? Do you have one GPS system for the entire USA? Is Canada sold only as a separate system? What is its cost? New subject: I own an automobile with what I believe is the Navtech system GPS in it ( a BMW 325Xi, year model 2003). Is that the Magellan system? Thank you for your answers!
This Magellan app is for North America. At the current time I do not see any offerings for various other countries but I’m sure they plan on doing that in the future. The North American version does include Canada and Puerto Rico though. By default the app works in English but it also has support for Spanish and French. This app, while not directly comparable to a standalone GPS because of the differences in hardware, has very similar software to Magellans standalone GPS units. There may be slight differences from unit to unit, but overall this app will navigate in a way that is familiar to users of Magellan GPS products.
