iSaidWhat?! ($1.99)
Version – 1.0
REVIEW – “A great gag app that doubles as a useful audio recorder!”
When I read the description and downloaded iSaidWhat?! I was totally
expecting to get just another gag app. A unique concept for one, but nonetheless another gag app. What I ended up getting was an excellent audio editor with great social networking features built in! The basic idea of the app is that you can record someone talking and then use the
individual words in their sentences to make a new audio file of them saying something different. If you enjoy pranks and social networking then this is definitely an iPhone app worth taking a look at!
The interface of this app is simple. The first thing you will need to do to get started is record some audio to use. All you have to do to start recording is just touch the red record button at the bottom of the screen. There is even a little mic icon to the left that will bring up a scroll bar to control your device’s mic sensitivity. This will allow you to either amplify the signal to get more sound, or cut it to keep it from distorting.
Once you have your audio recording all you have to do is touch the “Save” button in the upper right corner, enter in a file name, and its time to start editing! The first thing
you’ll want to do is capture the individual words and phrases and add labels to them. You do this by touching the “Scissors” icon, selecting a portion of audio, confirming it with the check mark and giving it a name.
This process can take anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes
depending on how much audio you have recorded. Once you get all of your “snippets” set it’s time to start mixing them into your new creation. All you have to do is touch the “Arrange” button in the upper right corner from within the recording that you want to arrange.
The arrangement will, by default, include one copy of all the audio snippets that you saved from your recording. From this screen you have several options in the menu at the bottom of the screen that will allow you to duplicate snippets, delete them, or you can even import snippets from another recording by touching the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen.
While the author of this iPhone app only intended for it to be a gimmicky “entertainment” app, I can actually see a lot of potential uses for an app like this. The audio recording feature works a lot better than most “recorder” apps and the interface allows you to quickly and easily edit audio files and send them to your email or computer, as well as Facebook and Twitter! So whether you’re just bored and want to have a little fun, or you are looking for a good audio recording app for your iPhone or iPod Touch, you should definitely check out iSaidWhat in the App Store today!

Clever, usable, well-designed audio waveform editor for the iPhone, premised on the idea of making edited gag recordings of your friends. The waveform trimming and editing feature is just great — I wish the iPhone OS’s built-in “trim” UI worked more like this.

Wow! iSaidWhat?! looks like a very nice iPhone audio editor. It can probably be used to do much than intended.

If this app didn’t have a stupid name, and wasn’t targeted at the iFart demographic, it’d be a fantastic audio tool…. Of course, I bought iSaidWhat despite its name and positioning; fundamentally it’s an outrageously well-designed editor.
