I am an avid wine drinker but I will admit to know very little about wine besides the difference between red wine and white wine. But if asked to tell the difference between a Merlot and a Pinot Noir just by taste and I would probably be pretty stumped. This incredible app not only teaches me about wine, but tells me about nearly every sort of wine I could consider buying and so much more.
When you first look at the app you are presented with a long list of wine brands. This is helpful if you are standing in a grocery aisle or a wine store and want to know a little more about the wine you are looking at. Once you click the brand and the type of wine, you’ll be able to see reviews, prices and even food pairings. You will never be stuck buying a bottle of wine you don’t like or that does not really fit your dinner choices again. The guide includes wine ranging from a few dollars a bottle to hundreds of dollars per bottle. There is a search function as well if you would like to make things easier than simply skimming through alphabetically.
But if you click the search option on the bottom then you get a great deal more options about what sort of wine you are looking. Search by price, rating, style, variety and region. This will help you narrow down the perfect bottle for you. Then once you find that perfect bottle, if you like it, you can mark it down in your wine list. The app offers a list option where you can keep track of wines you have, wines you like and whatever wines you want to try.
This app also has a vintages function so that you can find out what to expect from a certain vintage of wine, which is particularly useful if you are at a restaurant and want to pick the perfect bottle to complement your dinner. I don’t expect to be using this feature very often, solely because I do not often order vintage wine, but it is very interesting to look at the different varieties and styles between years.
The final feature of this app is the reference section. This offers both a glossary to go through and define any of the terms you will find in any of the reviews. It also has a wine 101 section which includes valuable information about buying and storing your wine, as well as an introduction to everything you need to know about wine.
For the casual wine drinker like me I find this app to be perfect. I love the simple interface and the list function because I will often forget what kinds of wine I particularly liked. I thought that some of the tones and flavors that were present in the wines were missing and the reviews were not as thorough as they could have been. But overall I found it an interesting app that like wine is bound to get better with age!
