REVIEW – “Do you hear what I hear?”

With the prominence of MP3 players and iPods in today’s society, there are a large number of people that are damaging the hearing and don’t even know it. As an iPhone or iPod user you probably listen to music on a regular basis. Are you damaging your hearing?

This application has 3 “tests” to judge whether you need to see a medical professional about your hearing, and/or stop listening to so much loud music! The first test is a sensitivity test. This is very similar to the test that medical professionals use to see how sensitive your hearing is. You listen to a series of beeps at different pitches and volume levels and press a button every time you hear one. The test thoroughly checks each ear for all different pitches and volumes.

The second test is the “Speech in Noise” test. This will test how much noise you can put up with and still be able to hear clearly what someone is saying. I will say that this test was a bit frustrating because the audio kept skipping. I was using an iPhone 3G when I tested this app, and so I don’t know if it was a processor speed issue, or maybe a memory leak, but what I do know is that it made the test more difficult to accurately judge because the voice was all jittery and unclear.

The final test is a questionnaire that asks you questions about whether you have trouble hearing certain things, or if anyone ever comments on your hearing. This test, at least to me seems totally bogus. It may be perfectly legitimate, but I scored quite well on the first two tests, and then the third test told me that I needed to see a medical professional about my hearing. Now this is just me, but if my ears are plenty sensitive, and I can hear sounds quite well in noise… why do I need to see a medical professional?

Besides that minor point though, the first two tests are very easy to use and seem to give accurate, thorough results. Best of all, this app is completely free!

DEVELOPERS NOTES

Hearing Loss Myth: Hearing loss affects only “old people” and is merely a sign of agin.

Actually it is the reverse of what most people think. The majority (65%) of people with hearing loss are younger than age 65. There are more than six million people in the U.S. between the ages of 18 and 44 with hearing loss, and nearly one and half million are school age. Hearing loss affects all age groups.

uHearTM is a hearing loss screening test which allows you to test your hearing to determine if it is within normal range, or if you have a potential hearing loss.

uHear lets you assess your hearing on any one or all three of these tests:

  1. Hearing Sensitivity is used to determine the quietest sounds you can hear.
  2. Speech in Noise is a measurement of your ability to understand speech in the presence of noise.
  3. Questionnaire is a series of twelve questions regarding your performance in common listening situations.

If you do suspect a hearing loss, please seek the advice of a professional.
