Real Deer Hunting ($0.99)
Version – 1.0
REVIEW – “Real hunting without all the hours of waiting!”
I have to say that when I saw this game in the “Top 25” list of paid apps on my iPhone I was more than just a little skeptical. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised to
find that this game has several different ways to make play interesting. It also manages to capture the feel of waiting for just the right shot in hunting without making you wait around for hours like in real life.
When you start this game up you are greeted by a beautiful menu with four options. In the background you hear all kinds of sounds like birds, crickets and all kinds of wildlife. Once you are ready to get started you just press the “Go Hunting” button. You are then given the choice of three different
weapons to use: a Boy, a Rifle, and a Shotgun. You also will choose whether to hunt in Indiana or Texas.
There are several different places to hunt in both Indiana and Texas, but you can only go to two of the locations in each area. You unlock
all of the others by obtaining certain achievements such as killing a doe or a buck with a rack score of over 140. Some locations have more deer than others while others are better for finding the larger “trophy” bucks.
The actual hunting controls are relatively easy to use. You move the screen and your aim around by either dragging anywhere on the screen or by using the “control pad” that is in the lower left corner by default. Along the bottom of the screen you will see several different buttons.
These buttons do exactly what is described on them from “Antlers” which beats antlers together to attract deer to Binoculars which help you scout for deer and “Raise” which raises up your gun so that you can get ready to shoot.
Let me say this now, if you are not a patient person this game may not be for you. Sometimes you do have to wait a significant amount of time if you aim to down that “trophy buck” that you’ve been looking for. Especially on some of the maps where there is less cover, and those where the bigger bucks typically hang out in.
One thing that is missing from this game that I really would have liked to see is some kind of global high score list feature. But even that is not a total loss because you still have the “My Hunts” section which contains a “Trophy Room.” You can also easily “Brag”
to your friends about the deer that you took down! So you have kind of a high score list, but there is not really a good quick way to compare your scores with other people around the world and with your friends.
When you consider all of these things I was very impressed with how much replay this game has for being such a simple concept. On top of all of this Sunstorm Interactive is running an introductory rate of just $0.99 for this app! Even if you don’t enjoy hunting in real life this game can be a great way to kill time without killing your pocket book. So what are you waiting for? Head to the App Store and check it out today!
