REVIEW – “Your iPhone does what?”
This app just goes to show that there really is an app for everything! Gary Fung has come up with a creative and interesting use for the iPhone 3GS Magnometer; metal detection! That’s right, your mobile phone is now not just a phone, an ipod and a breakthrough internet communications device; it can now detect if there is metal in its vicinity!
The function of this app is very simple. First you make sure your phone is not near any metal and give it a good shake. Once the screen flashes the “Ready!” message you are ready to go! All you have to do is move the phone close a metal object and it will react accordingly. You can set it in the options to vibrate and/or make noise when metal is detected.
So how well does this work? Well; honestly, probably just as well as you thought it would. You have to get very close to the metal for it to register enough to set the sensor off, and even in extremely close proximity it won’t usually pick up extremely small objects like small coins and such.
So in summary, this is definitely a neat “parlor trick” type of app, but in my opinion probably not useful for much else. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s pretty awesome that you can actually use your phone to detect metal like this, but the iPhone’s magnometer is just not sensitive to make this actually useful for finding small metal objects. Still, at only $0.99, I’m sure that a lot of people will find this app interesting enough for a download!
