REVIEW – “A entire game based on the idea that Big Fish eats Little Fish”

This game is an iPhone version of an game called Feeding Frenzy in which you would use your mouse to control a little fish that was threatened by many larger fish. This game though fails to have the same charm and challenge that the old version held, but it is still entertaining.

This game starts you off as a tiny clownfish surrounded by other fish of three different sizes. The smallest type of fish are safe for you to eat, the larger fish are able to eat you. The more little fish  you eat the bigger you become until eventually you grow big enough to get the other larger fish. Eat enough of the large fish and you move on to the next level.

After each level you play a game of chance in which you choose one of three boxes and receive either something good or something bad. Something good for example is double points for ten seconds, whereas something bad is the inclusion of a shark which always has the ability to eat you. The shark is actually quite sneaky and will pop out from the sides and eat you before you even see him coming.

It is about five levels until you finish your journey as a clownfish, then you move on to the Arctic Ocean and play as another fish. The rules of the game are exactly the same but this time you’ve got a different background and you have the addition of fishermen. Boats appear above the water and drop nets, if you get caught in the net you lose a life.

At the end of each level you learn a sea life fact about the ocean and the creatures that live within it. Here is where you will find one of a few major flaws in the game. The facts are supposed to be used as a teaching tool but it is obvious that the facts were not written by an english speaker and therefore you will find poor grammar and sometimes they will not even use the right words. This is also prevalent in the game instructions. This doesn’t necessarily detract from gameplay but I was slightly annoyed by it.

The other thing that bothered me about the game is that it does not have the difficulty or the challenge that you found in Feeding Frenzy. For about the first ten levels there are only three fish so once you get big enough to eat every kind of fish there is very little challenge left. Eventually you meet with sharks, fisherman  nets and larger fish in order to add some challenge but even then it is unlikely that you will fail a level. The reason for this is that you get a very large number of lives which you can also increase as you play the game. Without the challenge I found myself becoming somewhat bored with the game.

On the upside the graphics were great and I loved the additions that were made to the game but I felt that even though their purpose was to add more of challenge they really didn’t. I think it would be a great game for kids, especially with the facts about marine life, but the poor grammar somewhat prevents that. (Though you may be able to make another game out of that for the kids).

I think this has the bare bones to be a good game but it just needs some proofing and some tweaking to be made just a tad more challenging.

Rules:The big fishes can eat little fishes then achieve the corresponding marks, only by accomplishing enough marks can you pass the level.
