REVIEW – “Control an army from the palm of your hand”
Probably the closest thing you will find to a massively multiplayer online experience on the iPhone (for now), World War takes the classic “text” based strategy game common to web browsers and brings it to you in the form of an app.
For those not familiar with the kind of game I am referencing this is basically how it works. You control some kind of army and a base which you can only see in the numbers representing your units. You amass some kind of resource which you use to purchase your units and eventually use them to attack other players’ armies/bases.
Now with the basics down we can focus on the unique figures of World War. Unlike some other games, you are not forced to only attack other players, there is a list of missions which may be completed, rewarding experience. The more experience you gain, the faster you “level up” granting access to more missions, units, structures and, of course, making your army more powerful. The important resources are metal which you acquire every hour in an amount based on what metal producing structures you have, health (how much damage you can suffer before expiring), energy (your resource for executing missions), and ammo (used each time you attack a player). This is the basic progression of the game, but it can get much more complicated.
Another feature is the honor points which, depending on what version of the game you download from the app store, you may start out with. These points may be turned in for bonuses ranging from restoring your energy to improving your attack power. To use them tap the president button on the home screen.
The home screen also has a newsfeed style list which tells you who attacked your base since you last accessed the game. Since it is a multi player game it doesn’t end when you close the app. This feature provides for very interesting and dynamic game-play but comes at the cost of needing access to the internet to even launch the app.
World War may seem very overwhelming and frankly it is, but not to worry, when first launched you are lead through the initial setup and taught how to do the basics. Once those have been mastered you are free to explore this app in its entirety, and trust me, there’s lots to do and unlock.
For a free app World War is incredibly extensive and will give the user hours of play time. And even if you are unfamiliar with this style of game it is very forgiving, even if neglected for a long period of time.
