REVIEW – “Get wise, at least a little, with Wisen Up”
Wisen Up is the most random, portable encyclopedia you can find. Maybe encyclopedia is too ambitious, but there is fairly vast collection of information. Oddly enough, most of it relates to medicine. Stick with me here.
You navigate Wisen Up by spinning a ring to select the item you wish to view. Content includes ancient cures, medical quizzes, funny medical snippets, information about daily oddities (like why do we sneeze), myths, a list of strange and incurable diseases, amazing body facts, types of doctors, a fear name directory, first aid mistakes, body language reference and personality quizzes.
The personality quizzes will be of most interest to the Facebook quiz fanatics. After completing a quiz on what type of god you would be or if you are a ladies man, the app will upload the results to your Facebook page for you. Wisen Up features 28 personality quizzes, none are at all serious.
But the app’s bulk is based in medical facts and oddities. The funny medical snippets include items taken from patient records along with medical jokes. Read a quick medical record update explaining how a patient was released to outpatient department without dressing, and then enjoy a Steve Martin joke. Use the “Tell Me Why” feature if you’d rather know why medical oddities happen in the first place.
The list of myths is also heavily weighted toward health and medicine, and pairs nicely with the ancient cures as both provide insight into commonly held untruths.
Then you can proceed to check out the amazing body facts, where you can learn that if you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee. If you need more information on the strange and incurable things that happen to our bodies, use the incurable diseases database and learn all about face blindness and Capgras syndrome. There is even a “type of doctors” list to help you pair an imaginary doctor with your newly discovered rare disease.
All of this information overload will definitely help you take the quizzes on medicine to rank your doctor level. A 60% will make you an intern, keep taking the quizzes to move on up. As with the personality quizzes, these results can be posted to Facebook with the tap of a button.
While the main menu of Wisen Up is a ring, each individual feature is seemingly menu-less. If you want to look at a new piece of information, fun fact or quiz question, simply tap the screen. The house in the upper left corner will take you home, and the arrow at the bottom of the screen will pop up the full menu for you, letting you email, post to Facebook or add to favorites.
Every screen of Wisen Up is a greenish-yellow and the drawings that accompany some facts are simple line drawings that get boring to look at. This app could use a visual upgrade to make using it more enjoyable. By the time you finish taking one personality quiz you are fed up with the green screen.
Wisen Up is a good buy for the person who is addicted to WebMD. The medical facts, trivia and quizzes will keep you entertained for a long time. If you only want quizzes to post to Facebook, keep looking as Wisen Up has a limited number of these at this time.
