REVIEW – “Check symptoms on the Go“
WebMD is a quick way of checking symptoms on the go. A great concept, this app has an easy to use interface that you can understand immediately. There is a bottom toolbar with a home, symptoms, treatment, and first aid section.
I found that the list of symptoms was very extensive and some of the information presented was very well done and comprehensive. At the same time however, I was disappointed to find that some medical practices listed were out of date. Hence, I think the warning that the WebMD app has that “WebMD does not provide medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment” is something that should definitely be considered.
In concept, this is a great app because if you are traveling or just going to the grocery store, running an errand, or doing a daily task, you can instantly check symptoms and decide whether you need to go see a doctor instantly or if you can wait a little while. Of all the sections offered, I found the first-aid to be most relevant, up to date, and chock full of information.
In terms of the app functionality, the treatment and first aid sections which are mainly text-based sections load up quickly and work well. On the other hand, the symptom checker tends to load up slowly. I also was dismayed to find out how many times this app crashed. While the body is a good idea, the one chosen is rather androgynous. I think it would be better if there were two bodies offered and distinctly a male and female version for specific gender-based questions as well.
Overall, I think this app has a lot of potential and I would recommend it if it did not crash or freeze as often as it did. Once those issues are repaired, I think this app is worth keeping and if you can have new bodies and update the other medical and health information that is out of date, this app has the potential to be a must-have and very useful app for everyone!
