REVIEW- “USGA’s U.S. Open 2009 app goes toe-to-toe with ESPN”
U.S. Open Golf Championship is an app that I’m not sure I could’ve even thought up. Who would’ve considered creating an app that can only be used one time, but can still be very effective? The United States Golf Association has done just that. It’s apps like this that keep ESPN on its major news media on its toes.
With this app you can watch live video from the U.S. Open Championship. But if you missed some the day’s game, no worries, you can catch the game highlights and stay on top of the highs and lows of tournament play.
Are you into game analysis and critique, or simply what news outlets are giving praise, The USGA has given you a news feed that refreshes itself regularly to bring you the latest from the green! Just follows the blue arrow and without leaving the USGA application, the full text news story is at your fingertips. And there’s still more.
Follow the individual scorecards of each player, par for par, and get the tee times for each group of players at the start of a new round of tournament play. You can even see the personal bio of each tournament player much like the bios you would se on ESPN, picture included. These small bios even give round results including putts per round and , greens in regulation, and fairways hit.
USGA has one more trick up its sleeve, full course details. There are 18 holes and you have all the information and visual as if you were there. Yardage and par number are listed for each hole. But the most promising feature is the flyover video and walkthrough video options offered for each hole. Both come with a narrated clip that gives details of the course hole and what type of club or putter would be used on the hole for the best results.
USGA is an app certainly worth the time of the golf lover on the go. And an application that other professional associations should look into developing. My good friend, Charlie, used this application to watch the game this summer. Must be a pleasant distraction, I caught him watching three times while we were in the newsroom.
