REVIEW – “Asteroids on your iPhone!”
The App Store is full of hundreds of games of all different types, but I have to admit that this is the first “Asteroids” type game I have downloaded. To be honest, I was a little worried about how the control scheme was going to work. I have always liked asteroids clones but it seemed to be one of those games that would be difficult to port to a touch screen based platform.
I will have to say that I was very impressed with the graphics in this game. 07 design obviously paid attention to even the little details. When you first open this app, the menu is simple and sharp looking. You have to option from there to turn the sound on or off, “Play Now!” or read the instructions. The instructions give you all the basics and tell you about the various power-ups you will find along the way.
Once you start the game, your ship is placed in the center of the screen facing up. In the upper left you will see how many ships (lives) you have remaining. In the upper right corner you will see your current score.
This game plays like most asteroid games with its own little “twists”. As you get further into the game, you will occasionally see comets that you cannot destroy fly through the screen. They move very quickly so you need to always be ready to dodge them!
The control scheme is very intuitive and does not take very long at all to adapt to. If you touch the screen somewhere your ship will turn toward that direction, fire and start moving that way. If you want to stop your ship all you have to do is touch it. You can also change directions without firing by touching and dragging from your ship in the direction that you want to go.
Occasionally when you destroy “asteroids” they will leave behind power-ups which the game calls “bonus coins”. There are four different kinds of “bonus coins”. There is one that destroys all of the asteroids on the screen, another that gives you more points, one that slows down all the remaining asteroids and a fourth that gives you an extra ship!
One of the best things about this game is that it starts out easy enough for pretty much anyone to play, but yet still manages to be fun and difficult enough for even the avid gamer! The only suggestion/criticism I have is that I would like to see some sort of “global” high-score list implemented into this game. That would possibly give this game even more replay value and perhaps make it one of the best game apps that I have seen in the App Store.
Even without a global high score list, this app is a lot of fun and very addicting. If you are looking for a fun game to play what are you waiting for? Go download SpaceFight from the App Store today!
