REVIEW – “Medical News on the Go!”

 

If you are looking for medical news in a user-friendly format, then look no further. MedPage Today Mobile has exactly what you are looking for. This application doesn’t have a lot of the “frills” of other similar apps, but what it does have is medical news, in a very easy to read format.

 

When you open this app you are greeted by the home screen. There is no menu bar at the bottom with various ways to view the information, only a “specialties” button and an “options” button. The news stories that you see on this opening screen are the “Latest News” stories from various categories. Clicking on any of them will take you directly to the article, and also give you a link to the MedPage website to get more information if you want to.
Under the “Options” menu you are able to select which page the application will default to. You can either leave it on the “Latest News” or select from a list of specialties. If you really just want to keep up with the latest in Genetics, you can easily set it to default to the “Genetics” page everytime you open the app.

 

The “Specialties” button in the lower right hand corner allows you to quickly and easily switch to the page of any specialty or to the “Latest News” page. This is one of the things that sets this app apart from many of the other medical apps. It is just so much easier to view news on a variety of topics. There are really no menus to wade through, all of the information is just right there at your fingertips.

 

Another great feature is that many of the articles come with audio. This allows you to easily absorb the information on the go. The audio is a little bit grainy, but is easily understood and downloads very quickly. I did have the application crash on me once or twice when trying to listen to audio, or leave an audio feed to go back to reading. Because of this it is apparent that there may be some memory leak problems with the audio in this app.

 

All of that said, this app is an excellent easy to use source of medical information, and I would recommend it to anyone, especially doctors and nurses. Keep in mind though that all of the information in this app comes from the same source. Besides the slight glitches I had with the audio though, this app runs smoothly and is very easy to use.
