Learn Chess (Free)
REVIEW – “Learn Chess Stays True To Its Name”
Learn Chess is more of an e-book than a game. It features 9 chapters of content meant to help the beginner learn the rules of chess, or to help any player improve their strategy. There is an introduction, explanation of how the pieces move, strategy, basic rules, and tactics.
Users flip through over 100 pages of content. Each page features a sample chess
board and brief description. The diagrams are clear and content concise. Over 100 pages of very similar screens and basic instruction can get a little daunting. Instead of trying to digest Learn Chess in a single sitting, it is better used to reference legal moves, rules or strategy as needed. For the player new to chess, Learn Chess could provide all the needed information. There is no full version of this free app, although users can opt to buy chess games from the developer, so everything you need is in Learn Chess.
Even if Learn Chess doesn’t offer a sample game mode for users to try out their new skills, the chess board in the e-book is interactive. On select screens, following instruction, users can try out the concepts. For example, after learning about checkmate, users can try to checkmate a king and then try to get out of a checkmate. Learn Chess shows all legal moves with a dotted line to help out the new player.
Clear instruction, loads of content and the ability to try out new skills makes Learn Chess an effective app to introduce chess to the new player, or help anyone improve their strategy.
