iHandy Level (Free)
REVIEW – “iHandy makes hanging pictures a breeze!”
There really is an app for everything in the App Store. The question you have to ask yourself is “just how useful are some of these apps?” iHandy has released one of the 5 tools in their “Carpenter” app for free. This app can be used to make sure things are level.

When you open up this app, you are greeted by a splash screen trying to sell you the Carpenter app with 4 other tools. If you click on the screen it will take you to the App Store to purchase it, if you wait a second it will take you to the main screen of the app.
There is not a whole lot to this app. Basically as soon as you turn it on it starts working as a level. Now if you go to actually use it on something, you will probably notice that it is not very accurate. This is because the hardware in every iPhone and iPod touch is slightly different.
Fortunately this tool includes a “calibration” feature. To calibrate the device, first you need to find a level surface. Then lay the device flat on either a long side, or a short side and press the button that looks like a target. You need to do this for both the landscape and the portrait view of the device.

Once that is done the level works pretty well. If you press the little “i” button you will see the device settings. Here you can toggle the calibration button so you don’t accidentally hit it again, toggle the “Hold” button (which holds whatever the level is displaying until it is pressed again) or set the “Bubble Sensitivity.” The “Bubble Sensitivity” basically makes the bubble react either faster or slower.
This app works pretty well once it is calibrated, as long as you make sure you place the device perpendicular to whatever you are trying to measure. If you tilt the device forward or backward, the reading is very erratic. All of that said, this app does what it’s supposed to, but the load time makes this app probably not ideal for real use on a job site. But if all you need is something to make sure that picture in your house is level, this app may be for you!

This might be the most beautiful level you can get in hand. Unlike some other levels in app store, this one is fully functional with calibration capability. It’s accurate after calibrated.
Enjoy!
*** IMPORTANT MESSAGE PLEASE READ ***
Because the sensor inside every individual iPhone/iPod touch could be built slightly differently, to make the level more accurate for your device, you need to calibrate before use.
To calibrate:
- Find a flat surface,
- Hold your device upright (in portrait mode and home button at the bottom), put the bottom edge of the device on the flat surface, then press Calibrate button (the one with a target image on it) to calibrate the portrait mode.
- Turn your device 90 degree clockwise (now it should be in landscape mode and home button on the left hand side), again keep it upright, and put the current bottom edge (long edge) on the flat surface, then press Calibrate button to calibrate the landscape mode.
- You are ready to go!
