REVIEW – “All Access French”
24/7 Tutor French is an app designed for the person unfamiliar with French, or just getting acquainted with the language. The words and phrases provided by the tutor are similar to those found in beginning French classes. There are five categories of words: home and family, town and country, opposites, basic phrases and questions.
After selecting a category, users can see the list of words or phrases – which appear without obvious order in a list. They can also take a multiple choice quiz, complete a puzzle, do a write-in quiz or see flash cards of the words/phrases. A native French speaker says the words/phrases and can be turned off if the user wishes.
The multiple choice quiz is a little slow to take because users must select their answer and then confirm it and after seeing the result, press next to move on. Seeing if the answer is correct or not right after answering is helpful and easier to process than seeing it at the end.
The puzzle is essentially identical to the write-in quiz only instead of using the keyboard you select from blocks of letters on the screen. There really is little purpose for both features as the basic action, writing words and phrases, is the same.
The flash cards show a phrase and when you select “answer”, it shows the English version on the screen under the French. This is a tidy way to do flashcards and does not have any unnecessary animations or sounds.
Users cannot combine features or take quizzes that cross categories. 24/7 Tutor French will track your progress if you want it to.
24/7 Tutor French provides basic words and phrases that are useful for the beginning student or traveler. The app explains nothing about grammar or how to modify the basic nouns it teaches, so it really is just a starting point. While easy to navigate, it sometimes feels like there are too many buttons to be pressed to complete any one activity. The best user for this app would be someone new to French looking to lay a foundation.
