ESPN Score Center – iPhone App Review

REVIEW – “ESPN… pushing its way to a phone near you”

I was very excited, with the release of the 3.0 firmware, to get access to ESPN mobile alerts. Unfortunately, as with many apps that have 3.0 related updates, the version with push notifications has not been released yet. Because of this I am reviewing the app that is currently in the app store, and looking forward at what is to come.

One of the best things about this app is how well ESPN has taken the feel of its broadcasts and website, and managed to translate it directly to an iPhone app in such a way that it just feels natural. One of the first things you will notice is that there is a bar at the bottom of the screen that is constantly running headline news for all kinds of sports, just like on TV! This is great, because you can be checking up on your favorite teams’ scores and at the same time notice that there is another game that is going right down to the wire!

As far as the interface of this app goes, You start out with just a “More from ESPN” page, but there is a little gear shaped icon in the bottom left corner. This little icon is where you set what sports you want ESPN to keep tabs on for you. There are a variety of sports to choose from all over the world, including baseball, basketball, cricket and rugby.

Each sport uses ESPN’s unique style bringing you things like game summaries, scores and live stats. There are even links to ESPN’s mobile website occasionally if you would like to get more information on a particular story.

All of these features are awesome, but the one that was demoed at WWDC and that everyone is waiting for is “push notifications.” This feature will keep you up to date with breaking sports news even when the app is not running! The new app will also integrate video highlights as well.

In summary, this is a good sports app right now, but it just hasn’t managed to separate itself from the competition yet. However, the upcoming update with video and push notifications is likely going to raise the bar high enough that it truly puts this app in a league of its own.
