Abyss #1 (Free)
REVIEW—”Abyss #1, where have I heard this story before?”
Abyss #1 starts off like many other action movies and comic books we have come to love. Dead father, dead mother, father and son have a strenuous relationship, father leaves his son a load too big for a kid his age, and you know the rest of the story. Through highs and lows the son is suppose to find himself and solve these great mysteries surrounding his father’s mysterious disappearance. It has always been a little much for me to bear, but to each his own. That being said, Abyss #1 does have some good things to offer.
The illustrators pay close attention to detail and the story lacks that usual lull in action movies and books that puts the viewer or reader to sleep. I was actively engaged throughout the whole book. There’s also a nice humor interwoven throughout the piece. However, it’s fairly dry humor, so if that’s not up your alley you should back out now.
As engaging as Abyss #1 is, it is sometimes hard to take seriously. It really feels like a mix between Batman and Spiderman with exception of a few different twists and turns that offer a different story.
That being said, Abyss #1 is a light read and an easy read, but redundant as it hangs on the wings of literature that preceded it. While the book itself is humorous, well written, and pays great attention to detail, I don’t think readers can get past this fact. There’s also some irony in the fact that there’s a sequel, Abyss #2, much like the other great action hero films and comics we have grown to love.
In the end, it’s up to the consumer to decide if they have space on their iPod or iPhone for a story similar to what they probably already have on multiple DVDs.

“You Can Take it with You”
ERIC HOFFMAN led a life of privilege. As the only son of a multi-billionaire weapons contractor, the sixteen year-old had the best of everything – education, travel, computers, and toys. But it’s true what they say: “money can’t buy happiness.” And what Eric really wanted more then anything in the world was a better relationship with his father, RAIFER HOFFMAN.
But after the death of his mother four years ago, his father grew distant and let his work consume him. So when word reached him that Raifer had passed away under mysterious circumstances, Eric had a mix of emotions – anger, regret, sadness, and ambivalence.
