REVIEW – “Fuel your car with cheap gas!”
The title of this app pretty much tells it all. Sumner Systems Management has released this tool into the app store to give you an easy way to find the cheapest gas in your area, and that is exactly what they have done. This app is primarily for use with the iPhone 3G and 3GS which have GPS capability.
When you open this app you are first asked for permission to use the GPS feature if your device supports it, and then you are taken to the main screen of the app. This is the screen where you will see a list of gas stations in your general area sorted by their price or by their location.
Selecting a gas station will bring up a pop-up window that will show the prices that have been entered for various types of fuel (Regular, Plus, Premium, Diesel) and also “Map” button and a “Tweet ‘Em!” Button. Touching “Map” will show the gas station’s location in Google maps. “Tweet em” allows you to twitter a gas stations price by just entering your twitter information into the app. You can also update the gas prices if they are inaccurate by touching the arrow next to the price that is either missing or inaccurate.
You have several options from the main screen. In the upper right corner is a button that allows you enter a zip code so that you can find a gas station nearby even with an iPod or 2G iPhone. At the bottom of the screen are three buttons, a “refresh” button that will re-download the gas price information from the server. The middle button is either an “@” symbol or a “$” symbol and toggles the app to sort your results by either location or price. This allows you to find the closest gas station with a reasonable price easily.
In the bottom right is a “+” button that allows you to submit gas stations that are not yet in the database. You just enter some basic information, the brand name, address, city and state and it is submitted to their servers for approval.
This app is extremely useful and at the same time manages to be very easy to use. The thing that manages to separate this app from many of its competitors though is the accuracy of the search results, and how easy it is to send gas priced updates in. If you find yourself looking for the best price on gasoline often, I would highly recommend this app.
