i Love Katamari ($4.99)
Version 1.0.3
REVIEW- “You’ll have a ball with this fun and unique game!”
For those of you who are not really into games or are not married to someone from Japan you may not have heard of Katamari. Well I’m not in the least bit sorry to admit that you have been really missing out. This game has a completely simple concept and yet is entirely addicting. It has versions on several different consoles but i Love Katamari is the iphone version.
Now if you don’t know what Katamari is well it’s a game where you have ball and your job is to make it into a very big Katamari. How do you do that? Well by rolling up objects that start off small and get bigger as you ball gets bigger. Each level has different objects and the levels are very well done and look just like any version of Katamari that you will find for any other game system.
The storyline is that you are creating Katamari’s in order to replace the stars that the King of All Cosmos knocked out of the sky. So he will sent you to different places and have you roll a Katamari big enough to collect a certain object (one level is a cat another a tower). But that is just story mode, there are plenty of other fun modes to play around with once you get the hang of the game.
Now Katamari has perhaps one of the simplest controls of any game. All you do is tilt your phone in the direct you want the ball to go, the more tilt the faster the ball rolls. You never have to worry about buttons to press or keeping track of anything, and the game works well with the accelerometer so you won’t get frustrated like other games you might try.
As for the other modes. At each of the different levels you will have the ability to choose one of four modes. Story Mode (which I discussed earlier), Time Attack Mode, Exact Size Challenge Mode and Eternal Mode.
Time Attack Mode allows you to make the biggest katamari possible within the alotted time limit.
Exact Size Challenge Mode has you roll up a katamari to a specified size.
Eternal Mode this lets you play the level as long as you want with no restrictions.
This game has a massive cult following and if you’re just reading this you’re probably thinking it sounds silly and I would agree with you. Before I tried this game I thought it looked incredibly boring, but once you start playing it hard to stop and it becomes really really fun.
The other great thing about this game is that it has its own catchy soundtrack. So I highly suggest leaving the sound on for this game as you will be playing and singing along in no time.
Now I know that $4.99 can be a lot to pay when you are not exactly sure what the game is like but luckily there is a lite version so you can try it out. Now the free version only features one level of time attack mode, so it isn’t much but it will give you a feel for the game play and how the game looks and feels.
If you can’t tell by now I love this game and I think the iPhone version is just the latest in a long line of successes with the Katamari theme.

This game is definitely a lot of fun. I had this one on Xbox and it is a real good time…but where is Little Cook? That is my kids favorite iPhone/iPod Touch game and it’s not on this site!! I have bought more than a couple of the games I have seen reviewed here but my little girl keeps going back to Little Cook. I would love to see it get a place on your site because unlike SOME of the game I see here, she is actually learning applicable knowledge from LC. Anyway, thanks for this review, I will be picking this one up from the app store.
