abcDJ ($2.99)

Version – 3.2

REVIEW – “abcDJ is an app that will exceed your expectations!”

abcDJ 1 300x200 abcDJ iPhone App ReviewThis is a great app for the budding DJ in your family!  Whether you are already familiar with DJ hardware or you just would like a new toy to play with abcDJ has a lot to offer.  It offers lots of nice features and even direct integration with your iTunes library via the built in “CD” player.

When you open abcDJ the first thing you’ll see is one of the “Analog” channels which is represented by a record player.  The first thing you’ll abcDJ 2 300x200 abcDJ iPhone App Reviewwant to do if you really want to fully use all the features is to upload some music to the app.  While it is possible to play any track from your iTunes library with the “CD” player function, you’ll need to upload the tracks you want directly into the app if you want to play with them in the “analog” tracks.

Transferring music to the app is simple, but it does require you to be on the same WiFi network.  All you have to do is touch the little WiFi icon on the right side of the screen and abcDJ 3 300x200 abcDJ iPhone App Reviewyou’ll be taken to a screen that shows your device’s IP address.  All you have to do is go to that address using a web browser on your PC and use the simple interface to upload files.

The main interface of the app is accessed via the menu on the right side of the screen.  One thing that I would recommend with this app is that you touch the “i” button in the bottom right corner and then turn on the “View selector stays on top” option.  There is a small red button in the upper right corner of the screen that when you touch it a menu shows up at the top of the screen.  Turning on this option will make that menu “toggle” instead of disappear when you use it to move to another screen.  In my opinion this option should just be turned on by default, but it is easy to fix.

Once you get everything set up playing music on one of the analog devices is simple.  You just touch the musical note button on the right and select a track.  An image of a record will be put on the turntable and it works just like a real record player does.  You just have to grab the “stylus” which is the needle and drag it to where you want to start on the recording.  Once you’ve got that set you just touch the “motor” abcDJ 4 300x200 abcDJ iPhone App Reviewbutton in the bottom left corner and it will start playing!

In the bottom right corner you’ll notice a drag bar with the word “pitch” above it.  This bar will allow you to control the speed and thus the pitch of the recording you are playing.  You can also control the range of how far you can change the pitch by pushing the button just to the left of the drag bar.

Besides the “CD Player” function the other main feature of this app is the sound effects screen.  This is also accessed from the menu at the top of the screen and is full of all kinds abcDJ 5 300x200 abcDJ iPhone App Reviewof sound effects from voices to sirens and percussion instruments.  This feature, combined with the ability to mix and manage two separate “Mono” tracks actually makes this quite the powerful DJ tool if you have plenty of music available in it.

My only real complaint with this app is that if you were planning to use it for serious DJ work there really needs to be a better way to organize the music that you upload to the app.  It all just goes in one big list that is sorted by title.  It also would be nice to be able to have at least some control over the “CD Player.”  As it is there is no software control of even the volume, and there is also no way to fast forward or rewind to a certain part of a track either.

All in all though this app is both a lot of fun, and could be quite useful as long as you don’t plan on filling it with a library of several hundred songs.  There are all kinds of tools to help you control exactly what is going out to your system and even the option to “split” the sound coming out so that you can use headphones at the same time as you are sending a feed out to your main system.  These features, and just the idea of being able to play with a “DJ” system on your iPhone make this app a worth purchase at just $2.99.  So what are you waiting for?  Check it out in the App Store today!
