GetGlue – iPhone App Review

Apparently I’m late to the game when it comes to GetGlue, it’s been around for a while online as a website where you rank, rate, like, share and check-in with your interests. From TV, Movies, Books, and much more. If I had to sum it up, I’d say it’s ‘Twitter’ Meets ‘Facebook Fans’ Meets ’4Sqaure’, for Entertainment. Now, they have an iPhone App which lets you do almost anything you could do on the site, only on your iPhone.

Although half of the fun of this App is simply sharing your interests and current hobbies with friends, they’ve built an entire community around this site subsequently the App. It’s easy to get hooked in quick in adding your Favorite Things, and ‘Liking’ them (exactly like Facebook’s ‘Like’ Feature).

In addition to searching for your your specific favorites books, website, movies, etc you also have the option to simply be given a list of the most popular to ‘Like’ or ‘Dislike’. This is entirely too addictive, and I will admit that I got sucked into it for a good 10 minutes before coming back out to test the actual purpose of the App, sharing your favorite things.

This is the real headline feature of the App. Lets say you want to let your friends know what you’re reading. You ‘Check-in’ to a Book. This will alert your friends, followers and subscribers that you’re currently reading this book (how? We’ll get to that in a second).

Simply search for the author or title and find it listed and click on ‘Check-In’, here you have the option to tweet or update Facebook with a similar message – this is how you tell the world know what you’re doing/liking. Of course, you could not, and it would simply show up on your GetGlue Profile (example: here is mine). Keep in mind that when you Tweet, it’ll link to the Book’s GetGlue Page (see example below). It’s entirely seamlessly integrated with these two social media sites, which I find pretty fantastic.

Now, other than being able to share all this info with your friends, what other advantages are there to using GetGlue? Well, the more you check-in, or add items that you Like, or by leaving an insightful comment (that others vote for) you can become a Guru (like 4sqaure’s Mayors) and win free stuff. Also, you collect ‘stickers’ on the site for the things you enjoy – with the option of ordering physical copies of them to adorn your laptop, locker, cubicle or whatever!

Within hours of launching this App was featured on the App Store. There are already a ton of people using Glue and I’m sure that this will catch on even further. If you want to share, discover and track your favorite things, this is a great App to have, and it takes only a few seconds to sign up and integrate with your Facebook and/or Twitter.
