Review – “A great way to sort your photos by events!”

If you spend a lot of time traveling and you love taking photos, MyPlaces! is an app that you should tame a look at! The concept is simple. MyPlaces! allows you to sort your photos by the event they were taken for. It also allows you to add location data to your photos if they’re taken with a device that does not have a built-in GPS chip.

When you open up MyPlaces! the first thing you see is a simple interface with a menu bar at the top and bottom of the screen. To add a new event, or “Group,” all you have to do is touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen. All you have to do is enter a name for the group and then touch the “Done” button in the upper right corner. You can sort the list of Groups or the events within them in ascending or descending order by touching the button in the center of the bottom of the screen.

Once you have added and opened up a “Group” you can add individual locations, photos and notes by touching the “+” button in the upper right corner. You’ll be taken to a screen with a map to enter in location you are posting about. At the bottom of the screen is a “Notes” button that will let you view and edit the name of the event and add relevant notes and photos.

It may seem a little silly at first to put your photos in an app to sort them by location when your iPhone already does that for you. With that said, if you’re the kind of person that takes a lot of photos, you’ll very quickly come to appreciate the fact that you can sort your photos into a variety of different sections based on where they were taken and what you were doing! All of that combined with the ability to add notes about the events you’re photographing manage to make this app quite useful.

The best selling points of this app are in how simple it manages to keep itself. At any time if you need to remove entries all you have to do is touch the “Edit” button in the upper left corner of the screen and use the familiar iPhone interface to touch the “-” button on the left and then touch the “Delete” button on the right.

While the interface is pretty simple, if you’re unsure and want to be walked through it all you have to do is touch the “?” button in the lower left corner of the screen. With that said, I don’t think very many people will ever need this feature because of how simple the app is. If you’re still unsure of how useful this app can be, I’d encourage you to try out the “Lite” version of the app for free. It is fully functional, just with ads and a limit on how many groups and events you can add.

Tap-a-Sack ($0.99)

Review – “A great distraction for all ages!”

One of my favorite types of games are those that I can start up quickly and play for a few minutes just for a little distractions, and I’ve found that Tap-a-Sack is an excellent fit in this category! Not only is it extremely easy to play, but there are no menu’s or options to sift through. You just open the app and start tapping!

The basic idea of Tap-a-Sack is that you have to keep tapping the sacks on the screen to keep them in the air. It’s kind of like Hackey Sack on your iDevice, except in this game you’ll be using your fingers instead of your feet! When you get started you’ll have just one sack, but things get hectic quickly if you don’t lose it as more sacks are added to the mix!

The main gameplay screen is simple. At the bottom you’ll find three numbers thatrepresent the highest score you’ve achieved since you opened the app, what your current score is, and the score of your last game.

While Tap-a-Sack may seem a little too simplistic on the surface, it’s really a breath of fresh air for someone that is just looking for a simple distraction. It has a couple of nice touches as well. You’ll see fireworks in the background as you make it further into the game, and you can send your high scores directly to Facebook!

To sum it all up, if what you’re looking for is a complex game that will make you think you should look elsewhere. If; however, you’re looking for a game that you can just pick up for a few minutes, or that can be played by people of all ages, you may want to check out Tap-a-Sack. easyFinder (Free)

Review – “Helping people find you made easy!”

Sometimes there’s nothing more frustrating than trying to give someone directions over the phone. If you find yourself constantly trying to send and receive directions, you may want to check out easyFinder! easyFinder makes it extremely easy send location information that can be viewed on any phone with access to Google Maps!

When you open up easyFinder the first thing you’ll see is a dialer much like the phone app. You’ll want to set things up first, and you do that by touching the little “i” button in the upper right corner. There is some basic information that will be used to generate the text that will be sent to your recipients.

Once you get everything setup it takes just a few seconds to send your coordinates to someone. You can either type in a phone number, or get one from your contacts list by touching the phonebook button on the left side of the screen.

If you want to send a message in addition to your coordinates you can either change the “Position” message in the setup options or you can create a custom message by turning your device sideways and typing in whatever it is you want it to say. Once you’re ready all you have to do to generate the message and link is touch the “Position” button. The “to” field will be automatically filled in with whatever number you chose within the app.

While sending your coordinates will work with any phone with a web browser and access to Google Maps, the “Request” feature requires the other party to have the easyFinder app running on their device. When you choose a number and touch the “Request” button it will send that person a link that will open up easyFinder on their phone and automatically fill in your phone’s number so they can send you where they are quickly!

If you even think that this app may be something you would be interested then you should really check it out. The app is very simple to use and it worked for me without any kinks whatsoever! That combined with the fact that it’s currently free and might not stay that way make this a great time to grab it up as well!

Up until recently there has been only one electronic medium for distributing music. With the advent of the App Store there have been a variety of artists that have experimented with Apps that bring their music out in a more dramatic way.  House Rulez – Magic Television for iPhone is an app that brings lyrics, music and visual aids to help portray the music as the artist originally intended.

When you open up the app the music starts playing from the first track of the album. You’ll see a splash screen and then once you touch the screen again you’ll be taken to the main menu. There a variety of options, including viewing the lyrics for the song that is currently playing.

If you choose to go and view the song you’ll not only hear the music, but also see some colorful animations that are set to the music as well. At the bottom of the screen are some basic playback controls that allow you to stop, pause, play and navigate through the tracks in either direction. You can also navigate tracks from this screen by swiping across the screen with your finger.

The music that is in this app has been produced by a variety ofdifferent internationally famous artists. If you’re really into techno music there is a chance that you might really like the music in this app. Unfortunately I was unable to really get a feel for what most of the songs were about because there was no English translation of the lyrics included.

To sum it all up, if you really like techno this app is functional and it includes a few exclusive tracks as well. At just $3.99 you’re certainly not going to find this much music this cheap in the iTunes Music Store! While I’m not a big fan of having music that I can’t just include in my iTunes library this app will certainly find its market at such a great price point.

Kemba – personal journal (Free)

Review – “Keep a personal journal with a unique twist!”

Kemba is a journal that not only helps you keep track of your thoughts, but it also helps you keep them organized! People that journal write about all kinds of things, they write about their experiences as mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, and as participants in all kinds of activities and hobbies. What if there was a way to keep track of how much time you spend writing about different parts of your life? Well with Kemba (a sort of acronym for “KEep Me BAlanced”) you can do that and more with an easy to use interface on your mobile device!

The first thing you’ll need to do when you open up Kemba for the first time is set up your “roles.” These are the different aspects of your life that you want to post about and keep track of. You can have anywhere from just a couple of broad ones, or you can choose to really micro-manage things down into up to 14 different categories, each with it’s own unique color code.

Once you get your roles set up you’re ready to start journaling! To write a new post you just touch the “New” tab at the bottom of the screen. You’ll need enter a title for your post and it will automatically track when you start and end your post to figure out how much time you spend on it.

Once you’ve finished a post you can add up to 4 images to your post. Unfortunately you can’t just snap pictures from directly within the app. This is not a huge deal, but being a journal app it would be nice to have a way to just snap a quick picture to add to your post. Once you have your post finished you’ll need to enter in which “role” your post is most closely related to and then touch the “Save” button in the upper right corner of the screen.

Over time and as you accumulate more posts Kemba’s graphs will get more accurate. The idea is that with time you’ll find out where your true priorities lie. While you may want to think that you spend the most time on certain activities, you may find your life completely dominated by some of the more trivial things in your life! The graphs break down not only how many posts you create for each “Role,” but also how much time you spend writing them.

While I’ve never been a big “journaler” myself, this app manages to take a fresh approach that uses journaling to help set your priorities. While the app is free to try out, if you really want to get the most out of this app you’ll probably want to spring for the full version which can be bought via in-app purchase. While this may seem a little pricey, if you really want this app to be a help in setting your priorities, $4.99 is hardly going to break the bank. So what are you waiting for? Balance Your Life App (Free)

Review – “Check your priorities with a simple app!”

One thing that pretty much everyone struggles with at one time or another is setting priorities! How do we fit everything into our schedules and still manage to put enough emphasis on the things that are important? Well while an app in itself is not going to make you change your priorities, the Balance Your Life App is designed to help you assess them!

The interface is pretty simple. When you open up the app you’re taken to the main list. To add items to your priority list all you have to do is touch the “+” button in the upper right corner of the screen. You’ll be taken to a form that will allow you to add an item from a template, or to add a custom item if you want to.

Some of the template’s that you’ll see are for things like education, family, friends and Job. One thing I did find a bit odd is that there were no categories built-in for religion/God. With that said, I did find that most of the categories that I needed were there, you just won’t find a lot of extremely specific category’s.

In addition to setting your list of priorities you also need to set a certain “point” value to each item. This will help you figure out which things you are spending the most time doing. Not only will you see how many points each item has, but you’ll also see the percentages of how much of your time as a whole they are taking up!

To edit your list of categories just touch the button in the upper right corner labeled “Edit.” You can then delete any item by touching the little “-” button to the left and touching the “Delete” button.

If priorities are something you struggle with, then you know that they can be a big deal! If you’ve been looking for a good way to figure out what things you need to focus on in your own life, you may want to check out this app. Best of all the app is totally free! iBounce -Original ($1.99)

Imagine for a second that you review games, and that you were given Rock-Paper-Scissors to review. What can you say about something so elemental? It’s more a game mechanic than a game, but you can talk about it’s simplicity, how easy the rules are, how there’s a surprisingly deep layer of strategy that requires you to out-think your opponent and can even try to lay traps for your opponent.

Hmm… You know, now that I think about it, you can do a lot with a review of Rock-Paper-Scissors…

But how do you review something even simpler? iBounce is one such game. To play the game you shake your iPhone back and forth quickly, bouncing a ball off the sides of the screen to get points.

That’s it. Shake your iPhone, get some points. It’s simple, I’ll give it that. I was very surprised OpenFeint connected with the game. I can’t imagine there a huge demand for shake-your-iPhone leader boards, or even a small one for that matter, but I’ve never been big on the shake-to-shuffle feature, so I guess it takes all kinds.

One interesting thing I do have to mention about the game is the seasonal updates. If you look on the App Store, the pictures are of an orange ball bouncing around an outdoor scene with blue sky and green grass. The version I have, as you can see from the screen caps, is a Halloween edition, with an eyeball bouncing around a dark, moonlight night.

I can only imagine that there will also be updates for Christmas (a snowball or jingle bell, maybe?) and Easter (putting a literal Easter egg in the game would be a nice meta-commentary in a game with nothing else going on).

But unless you have some odd compulsion (or nothing better to do with your iPhone than give it to your toddler), you will left sorely wanting more. Shake your iPhone for 10 seconds, get some points and maybe share that score through OpenFeint? I wouldn’t pay $2 for it, but you might.

The Ultimate Retro Rally (SALE PRICE – $0.99)

I’ve never really gotten into racing games all that much. I mean, if I wanted to race, I’d get in my car and race. It’s the same reason I’m not really into sports games in general. There is, however, a subset of racing games that I have always really liked, and that’s arcade racing games. You know, games where realism is completely thrown out the window and you’re doing crazy stuff and where physics is ignored for the sake of gameplay.

One of my favorites back in the 8-bit days was RC Pro Am. For those of you who never played it, you raced around a track in one of 4 RC cars, upgrading your cars as you progressed and ramming your opponents or using weapons to otherwise disable or destroy the opposing cars. It was great!

Retro Rally brings that kind of feeling back, making for a very accessible and easy toplay racing game where you get to drive, ram, missile and mine your way to victory with 30 races over 10 different tracks.

The game’s control scheme is easy to get around, with only left, right, accelerate, brake, fire missiles and drop mines. The ingeniousness of the controls, however, is being able to set up the controls how you want. You can either use the accelerometer or onscreen buttons to control left, right, accelerate and brake, and, better still, you can set it up so that buttons control acceleration and braking while the accelerometer controls left and right, or vice versa. The game also gives you a choice about the camera angle, centering on the car with the road moving, or centering on the road with the card moving. The degree of freedom in deciding what control scheme you’re most comfortable with is one of the high points of the game.

The graphics very simple, with 2D models that look fine on my iPhone’s Retina Display, although they don’t look special, either, reminding me of the old 8-bit days.  One of the neatest flourishes the game features is the main menu. While most iOS games feature static menu screens, Retro Rally features a full-motion main menu that shows the cars racing around the track. While not important, it is a nice feature, and something that demonstrates a certain dedication to quality on the part of the makers.

Another point of interest is how the game’s AI is pretty tight. The first few races the AI racers take it easy, but in short order they start gunning for you (and each other) without remorse. The racetrack becomes nothing short of a war zone, and I haven’t seen AI be this vicious shy of Skynet. I still haven’t been able to beat the third race of the first track with all of the missiles and mines flying around.

And that’s a problem. While I am proud of my roots in gaming, I’m still, especially these days, a more casual gamer. While I do enjoy a challenge, I’m far more interested in just having fun, and getting blown up every few feet isn’t exactly fun. As such, being able to change the difficulty setting would be nice.

A feature the game doesn’t have that I would like is the ability to mod my car. While, ideally, this might be to give weapons or armor, just the ability to customize the car would be a nice addition, to personalize it and make it YOUR car.

The developer has described the game as a “community type experiment”, which he says means that he’s developing it to order, basically. You tell him what you want in the game, and he’ll add it, and has stated that multiplayer and more tracks are forthcoming. Those are welcome additions, and I’m hoping he’ll add difficulty settings and an ability to mod the car. If nothing else, it would be great to have my car just look different from other cars in multiplayer.

In a matter of good timing, I never ended up needing any sort of scheduler or day planner until I first got my 1st generation iPod Touch. I had just gotten a new job that involved traveling around to a different location each day, doing different things at each place. Keeping track of that was nightmarish, and then I noticed my iPod Touch’s calendar features allowed me to track where I was supposed to be and what I was supposed to do there, all in my pocket.  Great!

As such, when I upgraded to an iPhone it became something I used almost as much as the music features. Once I got my iPad, I loved the calendar upgrades even more, though I have been disappointed by a few of its limitations. For example, I’d love to be able to color coordinate events or locations, and I can’t. I’d also love to be able to sync my iPhone and iPad calendars, and I can’t do that either. At least, not without paying $100 a year for MobileMe, and that isn’t going to happen.

So when I got a chance to look at DejaOffice 2010, I was pretty excited. Being a universal app, I can use it on both my iPhone and iPad. This should mean I can sync between them, right? Wrong. If I were to pay between $70 and $130, it WOULD sync with Outlook, Lotus, and a large number of other business and productivity programs, but it won’t sync my iPhone and my iPad. So that’s a major disappointment.

But it’s also pretty much the only disappointment. That’s because it does so much personal management stuff that it makes it an ideal day-planner. It has a calendar, task list, day at a glance, expense tracking and notes, all with the ability to color code all in different categories so you can know at a glance.  All use the standard iOS style menu screens, which means a very small learning curve to using this to it’s fullest.

It also has access to your onboard contact list, though, since Apple doesn’t seem to allow access to the calendar that is unavailable, you’ll have to put in everything by hand (or pay the money for the syncing if your scheduling is on your computer). Again. But that’s out of their hands, so let’s be fair about it.

So, all of this functionality AND it’s free? Sounds win-win to me. Well, it would if I needed any of it.  Personally, I only need the calendar, and since it doesn’t give me syncing, I have no reason to change. But if you need that functionality (and you don’t mind paying for syncing if you need it), then you can’t miss.

Road Hog ($0.99)

I mentioned in another review that racing games weren’t really my thing, but that I do love arcade racing games. Of those, my all time favorite stands out as Bump ‘n Jump. I loved running people off the road or into obstacles, while jumping over and around obstacles and landing on cars, crushing them and driving off unharmed. It was great! I’m still waiting for it to make it’s iOS debut (I’m looking at you, Majesco!)

Until that glorious day, though, we’ve got Road Hog. Road Hog is a 3rd person overhead racer, where you drive around obstacles while trying to pick up stars and power-up cubes. There are several different power-up cubes; a heath cube that gives you one heart, an invincibility cube, a weapon cube that allows you to shoot an oncoming obstacle and a freeze cube that slows things down allowing you to movearound obstacles easier. There’s also a mystery cube that will give you a random effect, including one of those good effects above or a couple of negative effects like flickering the lights or reversing the controls for a few seconds.

And then there’s the jumping, because you CAN jump. However, you don’t jump very high or far. I found out the hard way that there are only a couple of obstacles that you can actually jump over – if you try to jump over most obstacles you will instead jump right into them. Instead, jumping is mostly used to pick up stars or power-up cubes that are floating in mid-air. To make matters worse, to jump you need to touch the screen. However, to move your car you also need to touch the screen. As such, if you take your finger off the screen for a second and then touch the screen to move, you may jump into an obstacle instead of moving around it as you intended. As such it might be better to have an actual jump button.

However, this one issue aside, the controls are very tight. Just touch the screen and move your finger around to move your car around obstacles. The button to activate the cube abilities is on the top left, meaning that, if you’re holding your iPhone in your left hand the button is a perfect fit for your thumb.

As a bonus, in addition to keeping track of local scores and being able to post your scores to your Facebook account,Road Hog also has its own international leaderboard, keeping track of the top 100 players. Don’t expect to see me on the list. It’ll take me a few more weeks of playing before I get to those vaulted levels.

And lastly the graphics look great on the Retina Display, running smooth and looking crisp. There is one problem in that, thanks to the color scheme and lighting, some of the obstacles are hard to see, meaning it can be hard to get around them.

All told, Road Hog is no Bump ‘n Jump, but, despite it’s flaws, it still manages tight controls and crisp graphics, with gameplay that is smooth and easy. If you’re still not sure it’s worth a buck, give the free version a spin. If nothing else, I think you’ll agree it’ll help bide the time until those Data East classics finally find a home on the iDevices.

Tap ‘n Cap ($0.99)

I’m a cat person, myself.  I’ve had a few dogs over the years, and I think they’re nice enough, but I still prefer cats.  As such, the frequent pictures and videos of cats you find on the internet are great, and it’s probably no surprise that I visit a few lolcat sites when I’ve got a few spare minutes.

The one thing I’ve always wondered is how they make those lolcat pictures.  I mean, I assume they use MS Paint or something, open a picture and add in text, but it seems like more effort than it’s worth, just to put humorous captions on pictures of cats.  I’d have to take a picture of my cat, transfer it to my computer, open MS Paint, and type something witty.

… OK, so that’s not so difficult, but I’m a busy man!  I’ve got things to do and little time at home to make my lolcats.  That’s where Tap ‘n Cap comes in, putting all your lolcat-related work into one easy package.  Or, of course, your non-lolcat picture captioning work, too.

The program itself allows you to either take a picture from within the app itself, using your iPhone’s camera or select a picture from your photo gallery (making it useful on your iPad, too) and adding text before saving it or emailing it to friends.  Easy as 1-2-3.

That’s really all there is to it.  It’s one of the most simple, straightforward apps I’ve used in a long time.  It’s very intuitive; once you’ve selected your picture to edit, tap the “Caption” buton to ad a text box and type it in using the standard keyboard.  Once you’ve got your text, touch it to change the font (select from one of 2o fonts) or use two fingers to move, re-size and rotate the text.  Once you’ve finished with your masterpiece, just press “Finished” to save or mail it.

I’m also impressed with how well the fonts take to scaling.  I didn’t notice any pixellation on my iPhone 4 until the text was about double in size, and future updates promising high resolution fonts should mean that you can get them even larger soon.

With this simplicity comes a few small problems, however; once you’ve saved a photo, you can no longer edit it.  That’s not a huge deal, especially for something as simple as adding captions, but it beats starting over.  Naturally, it doesn’t overwrite the original photo, although if using a photo taken in-app you have to specify in the settings that you want to save the original.  As such, you’re in no danger of losing the original, but if you misspell something (unintentionally – we ARE talking lolcats, after all) you have to go back and re-create it.

The other issues are all minor features it would be nice to have that aren’t currently present.  These are things like being able to rotate the picture, scale or crop the picture, uploading the images to photo services or social networking sites and the like.  Fortunately, all of these things are minor and do not detract at all from the core functionality.  Better yet, all of these things are promised additions in future updeates!

As such, this app does everything it promises, it does it well and it’ll do more in the future.  If you need to get your lolcatting done, I can’t think of a better way to do it.

Aliens Need Brains ($1.99)

Did you ever play the game Beachhead 2000? I’m not talking about the PC version, but the arcade version, where you have to put on a helmet and rotate around to shoot the bad guys?  It was a lot of fun to be staring out of my visor onto the battlefield and mowing down wave after wave of enemy, rotating left and right as if I were in a real gun emplacement.  It gave the game a sense of reality because you actually had to rotate your body to track and shoot, like virtual reality.

Aliens Need Brains brings back some of that feeling with a gameplay style very reminescent of Beachhead, with a few interesting twists.  In this case, instead of fighting against a oncoming army, you are fighting against aliens who are after your brain.  Why they’re after your brain I can’t imagine, but who cares?  There are 6 different kinds of aliens, which have a character design I haven’t seen before.  Well, kinda.  I suppose they look like a cross between the aliens from Mars Attacks and zombies. 

Instead of playing in first-person view, you play in third-person, with the camera tucked behind a young man shooting through wave after wave of oncoming aliens.  At your disposal are 7 different weapons (though for any given wave you can only equip three of them), ranging from a standard pulsar (pistol), mega pulsar (machine gun) or blaster (shotgun), to more esoteric and clearly homemade weapons like a “foozuka” (a bazooka with an explosive football head). To further help your chances, your pulsar and your character can be upgraded with the money you earn killing aliens, while the other weapons all use ammo that you can spend money to replenish.

The graphics are great, too.  Designed from the ground up to take advantage of the iPhone 4 and its Retina Display, it looks gorgeous.  Taking a page from camp horror fare, it manages to be both cheesy and cartoony while still managing to be very creepy, especially when they start coming in larger numbers.

And when I say it was designed from the ground up for iPhone 4, I mean it.  It is, in fact, exclusive to the iPhone 4 and the 4th generation iPod Touch because it’s control mechanism uses the onboard gyroscope to pan around.  This means that you have to rotate yourself (or the phone) to turn and face the aliens, just like at the arcade with Beachhead.

The problem, though, is that, if you’re gaming on your iPhone, odds are you’re not in an arcade.  If, like me, you do most of your iPhone gaming on the bus or train, it’s not really possible to start spinning around to aim.  Although I guess if you’re on your break at work and you have a swivelling office chair you could do that, but otherwise the mechanic, while clever and fun, isn’t exactly stellar in most places where I game.

So I guess it comes down to where you game.  If you game at home, even a little, and you like shooting games you will love Aliens Need Brains.  If you don’t do much gaming at home, though, you’d best be in a fairly open space and not be easily embarrassed before you turn this one on.

Virion SD ($0.99)

A couple years back a kid with cancer teamed up with a game studio to make a small indie game about fighting cancer – literally.  I never got a chance to play it, but the footage I saw made it look like a cross between Space Harrier and the movie Fantastic Voyage.

Apparently, part of the idea sprang from research that shows people who are preoccupied don’t notice pain as much and that, given recent discoveries regarding the power of the mind over the body, your mind witnessing you battling cancer and winning could give your body the edge in beating off cancer.

Virion SD  (originally released for the iPad as Virion) follows a similar theme – fighting disease in the body – with a different mechanic – puzzle based matching.  And the results are a resounding success.  Instead of blasting cancer nucleopeptides to pieces, you are trying to stop virii in the brain by covering the end of viral receptors with antibodies floating around the brain.

The mechanic is simple enough, but actually doing it can be tricky.  That’s because botht he receptors and the antibodies are both rotating.  As such, it’s all about timing.  You have to get the antibodies into a perfect orbit around the receptor.  To complicate things, as the game advances there are more receptors to match and you will need to match multiple receptors at once. To top it all off, you’ve got a timer, and if you don’t clear all the receptors before time’s up it’s game over.

The game is smooth, simple and addictive.  I started playing the game a couple of hours before work, and the next thing I knew I was running late, which is something I can’t say about very many iOS games.  That’s because once you’ve cleared one section of the brain, you then move to another section and do it all over again.  Different sections are collered differently to indicate difficulty, and how well you do really does matter.  To unlock the next patient, you need to get 20 points over 9 sections.  Points are acquired based on how well you do, with a bronze star giving 1 point, a silver star giving 2 points, and a gold star giving 4 points.  There are 14 people to save, and with each having 9 sections of brain, there are over 120 levels to the game.

Another nice feature is having 3 save files with customizable photo tags, allowing 3 people to play without affecting another’s game, which any parent who has an iPhone is all too familiar with.

Truth be told, I’m looking for a flaw and I can’t find one.  I mean, sure, the graphics are simple, but they should be simple, and the level of polish on the game (graphics and all) is something you seldom see outside of the larger app studios.  So if after all this you’re still on the fence, give the free version a try.  I think you’ll agree it’s good.

Review – “Fast-paced physics game brought to the iPad platform!”

One genre of games that definitely benefits from the iPad’s larger screen are puzzle games. Especially games like Toy Physics! The extra screen space allows there to be a lot more going on at the same time. The basic idea of Toy Physics is that you have to get the toys to fall into the boxes. You do this by touching and dragging on the screen to create little platforms that can hold up and direct the toys where they need to go!

When you open up Toy Physics you’re greeted by some music and a menu with 3 buttons on it. The first thing I did was check out the “Instructions” which show you basically how the game works and what to do. I would recommend just jumping into the game though because it’s pretty easy to get figured out!

Once you select “Play” you’ll be taken to a screen where you can specify what difficulty level you want to play on. There are three difficulty levels (easy, medium, and hard) to choose from and they make the game harder basically by increasing the amount of toys that you have to get into crates!

In order to win a level you have to get the specified number of toys into boxes, while not letting three of them get past you. As you get further into the game the toys will fall more quickly and you’ll have more obstacles getting in your way!

the graphics of this game, while not absolutely stunning, surely do add to the feel of the game, and the physics engine is also pretty good as well. As you finish levels you’ll get a “score” based on how many objects you let get through your defenses. If you are perfect you get 3 stars, if you miss one you get 3 stars and if you miss two then you get just 1 star.

Overall this is one of the few games I’ve played in a while that really feels unique. The gameplay is fun and very smooth as well. One thing that would be nice though is there was some kind of scoring besides just how many “stars” you get when you beat the level. I was also a little bit surprised that the app is not linked to any social network such as OpenFeint or GameCenter.

Despite having a few relatively small problems this is an app that is definitely a lot of fun. And while $3.99 may seem a little expensive, it’s most certainly not bad at all for an iPad app of this nature. So what are you waiting for? Best Manager Secrets ($1.99)

Part and parcel with business management are the myriad books on different business management philosophies.  We’ve all seen books by the likes of Zig Ziglar and Donald Trump.  Business managers and the like also read books like The Art of War by Sun Tsu and The Book of the Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi, which are detailed works on fighting and waging wars, not business management.  In any case, there’s a new author to add to the mix.

Best Manager Secrets is an ebook app by Ziv Aviv, written to share his knowledge of business management and what he does to encourage and inspire loyalty, dedication and a positive work ethic in his employees while also making sure that his bosses know he’s the right man for the job.

Divided into 10 chapters, his management philosophy might best be described as brand management, with you (and, by extension, the team you manage) as the brand you’re managing.  As such, each of the 10 chapters discusses a different aspect of that; bringing your employees on board and getting them happy to be a part of your team, and getting your team noticed by others in the company to help on your own rise through the company.

The ebook itself is short, clocking in at 51 pages, making it a quick read.  And at $1.99 it is one of the cheapest business management books you’ll find around.  Unfortunately, I can’t really say how good his ideas are as I’m not a business person myself, but considering that businessmen and women spend thousands of dollars on books and courses on becoming a better manage, it certainly seems like a drop in the bucket.

The app is solid and easy to use, but plain, with very few features.  For example, while it will remember the last place you left as you were reading, there is no way to bookmark or highlight passages to re-read later.  With 10 clearly marked chapters, and with each chapter being only about 5 pages, it’s not that difficult to re-find a section you want to re-read, but it would be much more convenient to have bookmarking available.

Another problem is that there seems to have been no proofreading whatsoever; there are numerous grammatical mistakes and strange word choices; the title itself, Best Manager Secrets, is indicative of some of the odd-sounding English used.  However, it doesn’t detract from overall understanding, and the simple English and conversational tone macke it much easier to read and more accessible to a wider group of people, including someone like me whose eyes glaze over when looking at a management book.

But since I’m not a business manager, I don’t know that I’ll ever need the information in this ebook.   On the other hand, if you are one or considering becoming one, you might find this to be the best $2 you ever spent on career building.

Moto Mania ($0.99)

I used to love playing Excitebike back when I first got my NES.  It was a very simple but fun game, running up ramps and making huge jumps.  Moto Mania reminds me of Excitebike quite a bit; it’s a very simple and fun game, running up ramps and making huge jumps.

Controls are equally simple: to accelerate, touch the right side of the screen.  To reverse, touch the left side of the screen.  To tilt back or forward (including doing back flips or forward flips), tilt your phone to the left or right to flip backwards or forwards, respectively.  This is important, as landing wrong will cause you to fly off your bike and ragdollize.

However, while Excitebike was limited to a couple of motocross tracks, Moto Mania has twenty tracks split between an outdoor environment and a city environment.  In these environments there are various ramps, jumps, pits, and other obstacles to help you fly in the sky and flip your bike.  Or, you know, fly off your bike and ragdollize.

Indeed, one of the joys of the game is watching your biker ragdollize during the many (MANY!) accidents you WILL have, screaming in agony accompanied by the snapping of bones.  In fact, I enjoyed it so much I’m beginning to wonder if the game should have been called “Pocket Sadist”.

A nice addition is the ability to customize your bike by selecting the bike paint and wheels, and it keeps track of your best times around each track, giving the tracks some replay value in trying to beat your own best time.

However, Moto Mania does have a few problems.  The biggest is the sheer shortness of the game.  Each of the twenty tracks can be completed in less than a minute, and even allowing for a certain amount of time spent just running my biker off the track and watching him slam into walls, I was done with the game in less than an hour.

Another small disappointment is that, considering the much trumpeted ragdoll physics, the biker doesn’t ragdollize all that much.  He has only 3 points of articulation, as well as only having one arm and one leg.  I suppose that’s only fair enough for a 2D character, but it’d be much more fun to watch both arms and legs ragdollizing independently.

Just the same, I haven’t had this much fun crashing and burning since playing the original Burnout.  I think that makes it worthwhile.

Roll Em Hoops HD ($1.99)

I have very fond memories of ski-ball; countless hours spentrolling balls up that slope to get as many tickets as possible to win prizes at Chuck E. Cheeze.  As such, Roll Em Hoops gives me something of a nostalgic feeling.  Of course, it’s not classic ski-ball; it’s more a hybrid of ski-ball and the free throw machines.  But here, unlike the free throw machines, I can actually get the balls into the hoops, making it a great way to kill time.

Roll Em Hoops has been available as an iPhone app for some time, and was also recently made into a universal app, but it’s also received an HD upgrade with higher quality graphics for your iPad.  The game options and play are identical in both versions.

In case you haven’t played the universal version, there are three game options: In The Bonus, OldSchool and 3-Point Shootout.  All three games feature flicking your finger up the screen, racing against the clock, to score as many points as possible.

Old School is essentially classic ski-ball with a basketball theme, though it does have one variation; every so often, the hoops will begin moving back and forth, doubling the point value of the hoops.

3-Point Shootout gives you 5 chances to shoot at each of the five hoops in turn.  Each ball is worth 1 point except the final ball of each hoop which is the “Money Ball” and worth 2 points.

In The Bonus is the most fun of the three, in that it has the normal play with 4 additional mini-games.  To start a mini-game, you have to get one ball in each hoop in the normal mode, lighting up the hoops.

The game boasts the use of the Ageia PhysX Engine, and it really makes a difference, as different flick strengths affect the ball.  It also keeps track of your high score and has both an online leaderboard and the ability to post your scores to Facebook, which is an added plus for those who like bragging rights.

It does have two problems I’ve noticed, and one of them is fairly critical; the directional sensor tracking your flicks doesn’t always register correctly, especially when flicking rapidly.  There were several times when I flicked up and to the right, yet the ball rolled left and vice versa.  Until this problem is fixed it’ll continue to be frustrating.

The second is a minor quibble, which is that once a game is finished, if you want to switch play modes you have to go back to the main menu and select a new game.  It’d be nice to be able to select a different play mode from the game over screen, but, as I said, that’s a very minor thing.

In the end, if you already have the universal app (which is only $.99), I don’t know if it’d be worth the extra $1.99 to upgrade to the HD version to me.  I’m sure to some it is, and that’s really a personal judgement.  But if you don’t have the universal app, the extra dollar to spring for the HD version isn’t unreasonable at all.

Review – “Protect planet earth from the invading forces”

Puzzle bricks is another great game if you’re looking for something that you can pick up and play for just a few minutes when you have some time to kill. The game is based on concepts from games like Breakout and Space invaders. the basic idea is that you have a paddle that can shoot bullets and you have to have to keep the ball moving while you use your bullets to destroy the incoming missiles that are fired at you randomly!

When you open up Puzzle Bricks you’re taken to the main menu screen. There are three buttons on this screen: “Play,” “Help,” and “High Scores.” The very first time you open the game though you’ll be asked to log into or create an OpenFeint profile. This is to track and compare your high scores with people all over the world, and also to offer a system for you to gain “achievements” for accomplishing various things in the game.

The first thing I did is touch the “Help” button to figure out how the game is played. This screen is very simple, and offers more information about the game as you scroll down. It shows that you control the paddle by touching below it and dragging from side to side, and that you have a blaster that is used for destroying missiles and changing the direction the ball.

Once you’ve got how to play figured out it’s time to head back to the main menu and hit “Play” to be taken to the main gameplay screen. When you’re ready to get started just touch the “Play” button in the center of the screen and the ball will start moving.

One of the first things I noticed while playing the game is how the control for firing the gun works. Don’t get me wrong, it does make sense. To fire your gun you just touch the paddle. The problem is that if you’re going to use it to try and maneuver the ball around things it’s a pain. Because you just touch the paddle, there is really to way to move the paddle and fire at the same time, which you really need to be able to do sometimes.

As you’re playing through the game you’ll see various items fall from the destroyed “Alien Pods” as the game calls them. Most of them just give you points, but you’ll want to keep an eye on all of the heart ones because those will not only give you points, but also extra lives!

Overall the game runs pretty smoothly, but it does have a few issues. Obviously there’s the control issue I mentioned but the game also needs the ability to continue where you left off, (iOS 4 compatibility) and the explosions in the game make it a little bit difficult to see what’s going on sometimes.

Review – “Take full advantage of your iOS camera!”

So you’ve heard all the talk about how great the camera’s are in the iPhone 4 and the new iPod touch? And then you saw the app that you use to actually take the pictures! While it is simple to use, certain parts of it are kind of slow and there are not very many options to customize it. If you’ve been looking for a way to really take control of the great camera in your device you might want to check out “Almost DSLR!”

The first thing I really noticed about this app is that it loads very quickly, even a little faster than the default iOS app. Once the app is loaded up you’ll see a menu full of options on the left side, two buttons for taking pictures and video at the bottom, and a small row of buttons in the upper right corner of the screen.

The app adjust quickly if you tilt it to the side, and all of the buttons remain in the same general area of the screen in landscape mode. If you’re using an iPhone 4 or a 4th generation iPod Touch you can also switch cameras by touching the button in the upper right corner of the screen.

If you touch the settings icon on the right side of the screen you’ll be able to set the camera to a variety of different quality settings. Depending on your device the settings are slightly different. For example, the iPhone 4′s maximum resolution for video is 1280×720, while the 3GS can only shoot 640×480.

There are a few other options in the settings menu that allow to set how the “Focus” and “Exposure” controls work. Basically the way that the app works is you touch something on the screen it will focus on the area. In addition if you double tap something on the screen, the app will set it’s exposure to the area of the screen that you select. In the option screen you have to ability to set whether the Focus and Exposure stay set at what you select, or if they continue to auto-adjust after you move the device.

Overall there plenty of features in this app to keep most users happy. You can set your devices LED flash to be a camera flash, or a torch. You can also Turn Focus and Exposure lock on/off, and turn the “grid” that helps you line up your pictures on or off as well!

My favorite features of this app though have to be just how quickly this app loads and that it has the ability to take pictures and to take video with the press of just one button! There is no sliding a button to the side to switch between video and photos!

Unfortunately, as good as this app is, every app has it’s faults. The main thing that really disappointed me is that “Almost DSLR” lacks a digital zoom feature. While there is a button in the upper right corner menu that allows you to select what kind of screen resolution you want, there is really not a way to zoom way in on something far away get good pictures.

All things aside, I really think that this app is going to replace the built-in iOS camera app for many people. the speed, and added features will not only allow you to take pictures more quickly, but it will also help you to take higher-quality pictures in bad lighting as well!

iDrink4Free ($0.99)

Review – “Fool your friends into buying you a drink!”

Whether you spend a lot of time in the bar, or you just want a few nifty tricks to show your friends, iDrink4Free is a very interesting app. The basic idea is that it has a variety of “parlor tricks” that you can perform to trick people into buying you a drink.

The “Home” screen of this app is a list of all of the available tricks. Each trick shows up in the list with it’s title, and the beginning of its “ITEMS NEEDED” list. Once you find a trick that you think might be interesting all you have to do is touch it. You’ll be taken to a screen where you can read exactly how to perform the trick.

In the upper right corner of each trick you’ll see a “+” button that will allow you to add it to your “favorites” list. Just below that button are buttons for sharing the trick with your friends via facebook/email, or for sharing where on the map you were when you successfully used the trick!

The menu at the bottom of the screen has two other options. You can choose to view a “Random” trick, or view your list of “Favorites!” Not only can you view your list of favorites though, you can actually manage it from this screen as well. To delete items off of this list all you have to do is swipe the one you want to remove to the right and then touch the “Delete” button that appears.

There is a decent amount of variety in the tricks in this app. Some of them are pretty in depth and difficult, while some of the others are simple enough that someone would probably have to be pretty drunk for them to work. With that said I did have a lot of fun testing out a few of them at home!

The app author also threw a little bit of a social aspect to it by allowing you to send in your location and a comment when you successfully use a trick! To view everyone else’s comments and their locations when they sent them all you have to do is touch the little globe icon in the upper right corner of the screen and you’ll be taken to a map.

While obviously there isn’t a whole lot to this app, it’s only $0.99, and it definitely had some interesting things to try out. Whether you really are a bar-hopper, or you just want some neat tricks to try out on your friends iDrink4Free is definitely an app to be taking a look at. So what are you waiting for?
