REVIEW – “Evidence surfaces that you can teach an old dog new tricks!”

Facebook was one of the very first iPhone apps that I ever installed.  That was back iPhone App Review - Facebook 1when I had just got my iPhone 3G and it was still all shiny and new.  It was also during a time when there really weren’t very many good social networking apps around.  A lot has changed since then, and thankfully one of the things that has changed a lot for the better is Facebook!

When you open up this new version of Facebook the first thing you will see is that Facebook has added “Sync Contacts” feature.  You are given the option to “sync” your contacts which basically will download their profile pic and Facebook profile address into your contact list.  iPhone App Review - Facebook 2If you choose to turn Sync on a confirmation screen will pop up telling you what exactly it will be doing.  Once you confirm it will take a few seconds/minutes depending on the size of your contact lists to sync all of the relevant information.

While the sync feature is a welcome addition I found that it is not really a “true” sync.  What I mean is that it does not add new entries to your address book and it only adds information to the ones that you already have.  With that said it is an excellent way to add photos for people that you don’t have iPhone App Review - Facebook 3one for yet without hunting them all down!

The sync feature seemed to work alright for me although there apparently have several people that have had issues with it.  The only issue of note that I encountered is the fact that not all of the photos synced properly(some of them seemed to be missing).  This is not a huge problem though and it probably has more to do with the different photo formats that people use than anything else.

Also new as of 3.0 is a totally redesigned interface!  There is a lot more of Facebook that you can actually get to now because the app acts more like a Facebook specific web browser iPhone App Review - Facebook 4instead of an app.  While this may seem like more a hindrance than a help it really isn’t because the app still loads just as quickly as the previous version did, even over slow internet!

As good as the new interface and the contact sync are the best feature by far is Facebooks new push notifications!  That’s right, now it is possible to know the instant that someone sends you a friend request, message, or comments on your iPhone App Review - Facebook 5status!  All of these push notifications and more are customizable from within your “Settings” app.  That means if you only want notifications for new messages you can have just that, or you can enable two or three specific types without turning them all on.

If there has ever been any doubt as to whether this app is a worthwhile addition to your iPhone or iPod Touch, this latest update should put those doubts to rest.  Whether you are a casual user and just want to save time, or if you are a Facebook addict and need to have access 24/7, this app offers plenty of customizable features to keep anyone happy!  This is simply a must have app in my opinion, so download it for Free today!
