REVIEW – “Get into some great disco music with this fast paced game!”

You might remember a little while ago when I reviewed DJ Nights: World Tour.  I was somewhat impressed with gameplay, especially how well suited it was for the iPhone/iPod Touch platform.  Well Clickgamer.com has released a new version of DJ Nights, “DJ Nights: Julie Thompsom Edition,” that is full of music from one of the world’s greatest DJ artists, Julie Thompson.  While the first game was a lot of fun, this one is even better because it is loaded with great music that really fits the “DJ” genre!

The interface is very similar to the previous DJ Nights game.  When you open it up you will see a splash screen tand then you’ll be taken to the main menu.  This game uses the OpenFeint network to track achievements and progress like many other games from Clickgamer.com.  If you already have an OpenFeint account, setup is as easy as just confirming that you would like to link the game to your account.

Once you get to the main menu the menu is a little different than the previous game.  When you first start the game most of the songs will be locked, but you will see four of them on the screen.  To scroll through the rest of the songs you just have to drag the screen left or right as you browse them in the “Album” area of the menu.  Along the bottom of the screen is a list of other menu areas that you can view.  Selection a different one will scroll the menu bar side to side and change the menu that is displayed in the main window.

Once you are ready to play there is a “How to play?” link to get you started.  If you have played the previous version of DJ Nights you can skip this and go straight to the first song.  The selection of songs in this game is good, and the difficulty increases slowly as you make your way through the game.  Thankfully there is also a “casual” and “advanced” difficulty for each level as well.  This makes the game easy enough for anyone to pick up and play, while at the same time challenging enough for the experienced gamer!

Gameplay in DJ Nights consists of several different methods of input that you must do in the rhythm that is displayed on the screen.  When you see a small rectangular button you must touch the screen on top of the button when it reaches the bottom line.   If it has a trail behind it then you need to hold it until the trail disappears.  You will also see horizontal yellow bars which mean you need to shake your device when it reaches the bottom and little swirly arrows that you must “swipe” the screen anywhere in rhythm to.

While the “DJ” genre of games seems to have flopped on many major consoles, the iPhone is really the perfect fit for it.  While console versions of “band” games require you to use instrument replicas to play them, the iPhone is a mobile platform that you can’t really do that with.  The creative control scheme, and great song list really make this game a winner in my opinion.

I would highly encourage you to consider downloading DJ Nights: Julie Thompson Edition.  If you have never played a DJ Nights game, consider downloading the free “DJ Nights: Global Tour Lite” to see what you’re missing.  I think that once you download this game you’ll be hooked right from the start.  Even if you have downloaded  “Global Tour” this game offers enough new gameplay to easily be worth the $2.99 price tag.  So go ahead and grab your copy today.  You won’t be disappointed!
