REVIEW – “Visit the bar without ever leaving home! Drinks are on the house!”

I have been remiss in trying out the number of social networking apps that the iPhone has to offer because I really do not understand their draw. I have my apps to check my networking sites and an app to use my messengers, that’s really all I need. But Bobba Bar was such an interesting concept that I decided to give it a try.

With this app you get to create your own character and then take it into a number of different bar like settings and mingle with the people there. This is not a new concept by any means but it is fun one – in theory. The problem with this app is that it’s entertainment value lies way to much in the people that you will find in the chatrooms, and after about 30 minutes of trying I could not find a single room with people who were willing to start any sort of conversation.

But let me set this up for you so that you have some idea of what this app is all about. There are a number of different bars that you can visit that have a theme such as romance, gamers, summer festival (for the music buffs) and there is block party for those of you who just like to hang out. Each room has a bartender and you simply walk up to him and tell him what sort of drink. Each bar seems to have it’s own set of drinks (for example the romance bar does not have beer but just about every other room seems to.) and if you order a drink that they do not have the bartender will be quick to suggest one for you.

Once you have your drink you can walk about the small area or have a seat. Each room only holds about ten people so it would be a nice cozy little way to meet people, if the people in the chatrooms were personable or fun to talk to. There really seems to be no way to create your own room or to moderate rooms in order to ensure that you have a fun place with people that are willing to be polite and have a real conversation.

The graphics are okay and surprisingly smooth considering I know chatrooms on the computer that work much like this app and they can often be very jerky and slow.

You can create a set of friends and keep in contact with them and send them private messages which is a decent feature. But considering the format of the chatroom I would like to see it have some more options. Maybe give the chat character a few actions or something interesting to do to make it a tad more interactive.

The bars are nicely designed and the bartenders will randomly throw out their own dialogue (which is good because they were the most talkative person in most of the chatrooms that I visited.)

Now you have no control over who adds you as a friend but you can see who has friended you and even check out which chatroom they are in, just in case you actually want to get to know them. You can also search people in case you were talking to someone and want to look them up again.

I would like to see this app have the option to create a private room because I think with a few friends and a few character actions this could become a very fun chat app. Currently though I find it slightly dull because the entertainment value is only as great as the quality of the people in the chatrooms.

But in any case the fact that its free means that it is at least worth a look and see for yourself.
