Bing (Free)

REVIEW – “There a new search app in town!”
Right on the heels of Google’s new update that vastly improved the voice
enabled serach feature, Microsoft has entered into the fray with an app of its own. The Bing app for iPhone, by the Microsoft Corporation, is basically a customized interface over all of Microsoft’s web search functions. This app incorporates a search feature, as well as the ability to quickly browse specific topics and even get directions/find things on a map!
One of the things that most impressed me about this app is how quickly everything works. Whether you type in a search query, speak one, or select a topic to browse the interface itself is very streamlined. Obviously if you don’t have a good internet connection where
you are at it is still going to run slow, but you can rest assured that the slow performance is not due to the app that you are using!
Something that I quickly noticed as I was using this app is the way that the search results are displayed. Instead of just showing you a list of web search results like in google, the results for a variety of different searches are all taken and shown to you in their respective categories. This makes it extremely easy to just scroll down and find “Images” related
to your search query, or even “News” or “Businesses” if applicable. You can also choose a specific type of item to search for by touching the little magnifying glass and your search will fill the entire screen with just that type of information.
At any time while using Bing you can go back to the “Home” screen by touching the little home icon in the lower left corner of the screen. The home screen gives you quick links to
browse things like maps and movie times or to get directions to somewhere. This makes it easy to quickly switch from searching the internet to navigating with just a few touches. Having trouble reading some of the text because its too small? Bing allows you to go to landscape mode by tilting your device. You can also easily disable this feature if you get tired of it switching back and forth when you don’t want it to

As much as I like the Google app’s functionality, I must admit that Microsoft’s Bing app is probably at least as much if not more optimized for the iPhone platform. While I think that most people will still side with Google, on the basis of familiarity, I am confident that if you will give Bing a chance that you will quickly grow to love it. It will not take long, if you are using it regularly, for you to begin to see just how powerful it really is. So what are you still sitting here reading this for? Check it out for free in the App Store today!
