REVIEW – “Amazing gameplay, even better storytelling”

I can’t even count how many times I have gotten excited iPhone App Review - Avatar 1about a game based on a movie or a TV series, only the be disappointed that the game was either designed poorly or really didn’t follow along with the original storyline.  Thankfully “Avatar” by Gameloft has not added yet another title to that list!  Avatar is a platform/action game where the story begins years before the iPhone App Review - Avatar 2setting for the new Avatar movie!

While the story, music and gameplay of this game are all good, the best part of the game definitely has to the be the graphics!  The menu’s and cutscenes are all beautifully rendered, and the in game graphics are even more impression!  The main menu for the game just has a couple of options.  You can start a new game, continue an old game or set some basic options before you get started!

Once you decide to get started you will need to select a difficulty level and iPhone App Review - Avatar 3then you will be taken to the “training facility.”  This is where you will learn how to use all of the basic controls as you collect items!  The entire first level is basically set up like an obstacle course and it is not difficult at all.  But what it does do is give you a chance to practice all of your basic controls before you get into the main game.

The basic controls are pretty easy to get used to.  There is a control pad in the bottom left corner of the screen and a couple of buttons on the right side that allow you to do all kinds of different things based on your environment.  By default the buttons are jump and release but they can also become “action” buttons.

Another thing that makes this game a lot of fun is the fact that gameplay itself is not extremely competitive.  Gameloft did a really good job of mixing in different types gameplay to keep things iPhone App Review - Avatar 4moving.  There is everything from obstacle course type areas to “slides” where the action feels a lot like a “Sonic the Hedgehog” game because of all the speed you get built up!

The thing that I was probably the most impressed with was  that while I have seen a lot of control schemes similar to this one, I have not seen many games that manage to make their controls feel nearly as smooth as Avatar’s iPhone App Review - Avatar 5controls.  The game feels a lot like a cross between a traditional first person shooter and an action/rpg style game.  Firing your gun feels natural as you run and jump through levels.  It really did not take much getting used to at all.

To sum all of this up, this game is not just another “movie game.”  In fact, if you are a fan of platform type games, you probably will not find a higher quality game than Avatar currently in the App Store.  While many people might be reluctant because of the $9.99 price tag, I would highly encourage you to check this game out.  You won’t be disappointed with it!
