Armado ($1.99)
Version 1.2.1
REVIEW – “A cute game packed with great fun and a great story line.”
Armado is not by any means a new game for the iPhone but it is one that many people may not have heard of. This cute little game tells the story of an armadillo turned hero when the great Eagle queen is taken captive by giant ants.
Now at first this storyline might seem a little strange and far-fetched but in reality it is really cute and something that kids will love. After each level the game breaks to go into the story with beautiful pictures that are displayed while a narrator and the characters tells the story. I really enjoyed the story and for me it may be the best part of the game and it was probably what the kids will like the best as well.
As far as the game play, you move Armado forward and backward using the accelerometer. This can be tricky at times but it moves pretty fast and makes the game rather easy. In order to jump, you simply tap the screen and to jump higher you tap the screen twice. This can be tricky because Armado tends to bounce when he hits the ground so using the jump feature to attack enemies or avoid obstacles, tends to force you to miss crystals or other objects.
I found that it was quite difficult to accurately attack the ants and other enemies that came after me. So most of the time I simply tried to run away from them, which was good because each level has a time limit, though I never even came close to that as a problem.
The graphics are great and the sound was nice as well but there is one significant downside to this game. It is very short. I would hope that with a game that has been out this long, that they would find a way to address the biggest problem. I would not even suggest changing the story but perhaps offering different difficulty levels would be a way to increase the gameplay.
There is the fact that you can compare scores with other players that may encourage replaying the game but it really does not add as much as I would like it to.
This game was novel when it first came out but now it has disappeared into the crowd which means that this game either needs to get an upgrade with more game play and better control or a sequel, because the story line and the characters are good enough that I would like to see them again.
There is a free version of this game for those who want to give the game and the controls a try before they shell out the money for the full version.
