Alice in Bomberland – iPhone App Review

Alice in Bomberland ($1.99)

Version 1.0.0

REVIEW – ” An interesting retelling of the classic tale that has an explosive finish!”

iPhone App Review - Alice in BomberlandEveryone knows the story of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, well this game takes that story and twists it around just slightly in order to make it just a little more dangerous. This game is completely adorable and absurd, both of which are two reasons why Alice in Bomberland is game you really should try.

This game starts off just like the actual Alice in Wonderland book and that is really where the charm of this app lies. All of the app’s illustrations are the work of children’s book illustrator Mark Meyers. They are completely whimsical and adorable, they really add a touch of realism to this crazy retelling. Unlike the original Alice in Wonderland, this journey is no walk in the park for dear Alice.

The game has a very simple premise, avoid the dynamite and bombs. This task is much more difficult than you might think, but dont worry, as you progress, plenty of story themed boosts are there to make sure you get through it alive. So get ready to become invincible with the Cheshire’s grin or shrink down a size with the Drink Me potion, and that’s only the beginning.iPhone App Review - Alice in Bomberland

The focus of the game is that you are trying to collect all of the lost pages to Alice’s story. The pages mean big points for the level but getting them can be a very big challenge.

The controls for this game are done much like a console game in that the bottom of the screen has right and left arrows and up and down arrows. After so long of playing games that work by simply pressing the direction you want to go or tilting the phone, this took a tad bit of getting used to for me.

iPhone App Review - Alice in BomberlandThe graphics were cute during gameplay as well. The game offers a couple of different modes with 8 different settings, for a total of 48 levels. For the most part you are either falling and trying to avoid bombs or walking back and forth and trying to avoid bombs.

All of your favorite characters make an appearance with a few slight changes (the caterpillar smokes a baz-hookah). You’ll laugh at the story and the adorable pictures.

But the problem for me was that the levels started to get a tad bit repetitive, sometimes the only reason to keep playing was to get to the next cut scene and see the rest of the story. I felt that there could have been a much larger range of motion involved and more changes (there are no scrolling levels, everything is done on one screen).

I think this game is very unique, just don’t say I didn’t warn you about the slight repetitiveness of the levels.
