Review – “Get people’s attention with AirType!”
Whether you’re at a concert, a party, or just taking photos somewhere, the AirType app by Peter Hartwig is a whole lot of fun! AirType is an app that allows you to swing your iDevice from side to side 
and display a message as you move from side to side in the air. This can can be used to allow people to read your message from a distance, or to take photos with an extremely cool effect in them!
While there are a few other apps that have a similar function to AirType, I must say that this app has one of the most straightforward interfaces that I’ve seen in an app like it! When you open up AirType the first thing you’ll see is the setup screen. Once you get everything set like you want it all you have to do is touch the “AirType IT!” button in the upper right corner and start swinging your device from side to side.
Setting up this app how you want it is easy. You have a text box in the upper left corner of the screen to put the text that you want to scroll on the screen. Below that
there are three different slider bars that control how smoothly the text scrolls, the color of the text, and the speed that the message will scroll.
The top slider bar, “Motion Smoothing,” makes it easier to hold still if you move it more to the left, but if it’s too close to the left then it’s almost impossible to get it to scroll through a larger amount of text. In all honesty I set it all the way to the right to get what I felt was the most useful setting.
There is one other option that you can set in the upper left area of the screen. Here you’ll find a “Use Accelerometer” toggle switch. Setting this switch on will make it so that you have to move your device from side to side to get the to scroll. Setting it off will make the text scroll across your screen automatically without you moving. It also puts more than one character on the screen at a time as it scrolls which makes it easier to read.
At the bottom of the settings screen the developer has a message telling you that it recommends adjusting the brightness of your phone and turning off Automatic Dimming. By doing this you will ensure that
the text is bright enough to be able to blur like in the pictures you see in this review, which will also make it much easier to read!
While the interface is extremely simple, there are a couple of features that I would really like to see the developers consider adding to this app. The first would be the ability to use multiple colors on the same message. Another thing that would be nice is to have the ability to change the font and font size of what is being displayed. While I did not have any trouble reading the messages scrolled with this app, it would still be nice to have more control over how it displays.
All things considered, this app is probably one of the most functional apps of its type! This is a direct result of the developers focusing on simplicity, and on the utility of it’s settings screen. With that said $1.99 does seem a little bit expensive (at least according according to App Store standards) for an app that has pretty limited functionality. With that said, if photography and the other potential uses for this app are something that you are interested in, I could definitely see this app being worth it!
